More OT: We just acquired an elderly semi-crashed computer with the
win7 recover partition on a too-small HD. Is there a way to restore the
winsystem to a bigger HD without restoring it to the existing HD,
creating a recover partition on a thumb drive and then restoring THAT to
the bigger drive?
And for bonus points, is it just as efficient (or perhaps moreso) to
install win7 from the disk (yes, I have one) and go through all the
ESSENTIAL security updates?
This elderly machine is better than the elderly winmachine I'm currently
using for taxes. I've tried putting old win HDs in new machines and it
never worked...

Depends. Depends how that recovery partition was designed to work. You might try cloning that disk to a bigger disk (a dd of disk to disk), thus disregarding a lot of disk space. Then apply the recovery (if it boots), and when (if) windows is recovered, delete the recovery partition, expand the partition table, then expand the windows partition to use the remainder of the disk (from inside windows). The advantage of using a recovery partition is that you get the drivers appropriate for that computer already installed, but then you have to apply all the updates. Thanks. Saved for after I've done my taxes on my current machine.
Apparently this year's software (both TurboTax and HRBlock) require Win8
or greater, but I haven't had the guts to try yet. I was sufficiently
pissed that I couldn't get an actual CD this year, just a Secret Code
for the download. I have a decent win10 laptop, but I like my 27"
screen and REAL keyboard for serious work :-(

Given that everything I do is already known to the government it would be a courtesy if they would just work out the taxes and send me a bill. Well, I was comparing to installing fresh from CD.
If you already have a working system with your applications and drivers
over the years, yes, that is painful indeed. I don't suffer much about
it because my workhorse system is Linux, and I use the same system since
around year 2000 till now - of course with hardware and software
upgrades over the years. My usage of Windows is minimal and I have few
applications to install or move around.

Here we are almost there. For normal people with a salary and savings,
they do provide us with the form already filled, we just have to sign
and pay. For the rest, depends. Most people only have to clarify a few
minor points in the form, then sign and pay - or be paid, on our system
it is normal for the administration to have to return some money to tax
payers (because they detracted too much from salaries and savings before).
Not for the rich, they have to employ some expert to do the job, apply
unthinkable deductions and such.

I'd use Clonezilla and try that. It'll copy all the partitions including the recovery partition.

Somewhere I read that as both the early Israelites and the early Moslems were pastoral people that neither mutton or goat's meat could elfishly be declared as "un clean" but pigs are difficult to herd and don't do well in hot dry climates and so can be declared as forbidden fruit without ruffling any feathers. -- Cheers, John B.

Perhaps it was a VegeWiener. Ghastly things. When the kids were tiny I
gave them those to nibble on because they didn't draw ants when the kids
left them in/under the couch.

Mid-60s. They'd been around for a long time -- made by the 7th Day
Adventists or other religious group that regards eating meat as a sin.
Their vege-burger was even worse. Hard to believe that a benevolent god
would inflict that stuff on his followers.
