If the people I want to share messages with use wasap, /I have/ to use wasap to chat with them. If I insist on using, say, signal, most probably they will not, and I will not be able to chat with them, so I would lose contact. More than a few of my contacts are not technical people, and depend on other people to install apps. These people have no reason to change. I have Telegram installed since years. Several of my contacts are there, but not all. And nobody talks there, it is not used. So basically, Telegram is useless to me. Here, usage of wasap is almost universal. It has replaced SMS, and the situation is not going to change anytime soon. -- Cheers, Carlos.

I am in California, and I use a mix of methods to communicate with friends & family; FaceTime/Messages, Skype/Skypeout, & WhatsApp. For WhatsApp I have one contact in the UK, one in NZ, and 4 in SouthAfrica, and it has worked faultlessly. I have 2 landline contacts in South Africa with no mobile access, for them I use Skype Out. I have had Signal installed on my iPhone for over a year, but until last week I had no contact using it. In a chat with one of my South African contacts the WhatsApp TOS came up so we ran a Signal connection trial. The text messaging works well on Signal, but when it came to Voice, we have not been able to make a connection. I will only drop WhatsApp if Signal is able to deliver a stable, and consistent voice connection. -- Regards, Savageduck

On iOS, some of the "experts" on this newsgroup can explain how Apple does it, but on Android, there are (fundamentally) two methods (AFAIK) for contact management amongst apps such that the default contacts sqlite db may or may not be consulted by any given app. See gory details here: o How do individual apps tie to the Android contacts sqlite database? <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/EvXtsP9radE> -- The problem with people like Joerg Lorenz is that facts are anathema to them, e.g., Joerg claims repeatedly the laws on recording voice calls around the world are the same everywhere, which is yet more proof that apologists like Joerg Lorenz own the belief systems of small children.

As soon as the booking went through I was contacted directly via WA. I had never used it before other than trying it a couple of times. Worked fine, but a bit disconcerting.

Yep, when I was in Italy in 2019, everything was done with WhatsApp, AirBNB, communication with the people hosting us in a small town (my town's Sister City), booking bicycle tours, etc. In China, the same year, everything was done on WeChat.

Yes, that's normal. One I declared an incident with my insurance. Somewhat later they guy that had to view the damages, instead of coming, just asked me to take a few photos via wasap. He saw them, and said ok, he would send the repairman straight away, no need for him to come and see (he had been recently at my house for a related incident, he new the place). Saved time. Renting a room? Sure, people do the talking via wasap. Ask for extra photos, details, numbers, etc. Send a PDF with the invoice, too. Another time I called someone to replace a broken tap. He asked how is the old tap, can you wasap a photo? So I did, and he arrived later with the correct tap as in the photo. We simply can't do that using MMS, because that is not covered by our phone plans and are expensive. Everybody assumes everybody has wasap. Even old ladies that never handled a computer or email, as soon as their son sets it up and explain it a bit :-D Ah, here in Spain we don't spell it right, we say "wasap" - at least people in my circle :-D -- Cheers, Carlos.

"App me when ...", "I'll app you...", "You've got an app[je]", etc. (The addition '[t]je' makes something small/little, i.e. babytje. A 'diminutive'?) I.e. it's used in the same way as 'text' is used in English-speaking countries when referring to SMS messages. And indeed, WhatsApp is omnipresent, 'even' on iDevices. Look at WhatsApp as the Windows of IM. Yes, there are others, but WhatsApp is the default.

There wasn't any reason to change before now. You can highlight the issue, explain why it's important (to you) and suggest moving. That might be enough for your contacts to at least consider it.

Most of the people that use it wouldn't understand what the fuss is about. When the prompt to accept conditions pops up (in anything), most people here click OK without even reading it. Some may start to read, then abandon as soon as they realize it is a hundred pages document - I do this, then I wait to see some report in the press and read that instead. -- Cheers, Carlos.
