It would be really nice if we could all agree -- without further 
discussion --  that some of us are good intelligent people and some of 
are evil stupid people and just let it go at that.  I miss the usenet 
groups that were killed by name-calling (among other things, of course) 
and don't want to see any more of them disappear.

They didn't disappear.  You chose to cease subscribing to them, AND
defining your own rules to define YOUR view of Usenet.  You need to
define your own squelch control.  Of course, you choosing to cease
visiting those noisy newsgroups is 100% squelch control.

I still subscribe.  Every once in a while I post.  I always look if I 
see there's a new message.  Thunderbird makes that easy.

two people who have been at it since 1999.  That used to be just a 
subset;  now it's the whole thing.

Can't you just kill those names? In Thunderbird you can easily add a
filter that kills a name and every reply. As long as those people do not
change names, it is easy.

Ok :-)

There was a menu for "create filter from message", but I do not see it
now. So, first right click on the address of the chap you want killfile,
to copy the address to the clipboard (Both name and address).

Say "guy <pest.org>".

click on "Tools" (Main window) then "Message Filters". A small window
should appear.

Filters for: comp.mobile.android

If you want the filter to apply to all groups, then in that line above
you select the news account, then the top entry, which in my case is
"usenet".

Then click "new" (new filter). Invent a name that allows you to remember
the filter name. Say "guy pest".

You will see below some tick boxes: you need "Manually run" and "getting
new mail: filter before junk clasification". Below, select the radio
button "match any of the following", and on the box below you will see
two drop lists and an input box. Select "From" "is" and paste "pest.org"
without the quotes. Then click on the plus symbol at the right to enter
another rule: "from" "contains" "guy".

Now look at the next box labeled "Perform these actions. Select on left
hand drop list "ignore subthread".

That's it. Click "OK", and you will return to the "message filters"
window, with a new entry labelled "guy pest". I would click on the
button named "Filter Log", then "enable filter log".

You can run this filter now to have effect on the existing messages. You
will see below "Run selected filters on: comp.mobile.android on
account". You can select which filters will run above, ticking the
boxes. And you can change the groups. It does not allow "all". Then
click on the button "Run Now" and you will see the affected subthreads
disapear entirely - if the group is big, it can take some time.


Ah, on the main menu "View", you can select "Threads" and tick "Ignored
threads" to see them again, while the tick is ticked.

Filter? IMO it's much easier to just not open an known troll's posts if
they truly offend you. However as mentioned elsewhere sometimes there's
good info to be found in these posts. And if nothing else there's always
the entertainment value. But YMMV.

One thing I also find entertaining are the 'I'm gonna filter you'
threats. Why tell the perp they're being filtered? Just do it. But of
course the filter threat is really just another form of a flame. You
know that because a few posts down the line they make more comments on
the filtered guy's posts.

I actually enjoy the drama. Usenet is so human. YMMV. Carry on...

Not as far as I'm concerned. That's much harder. It' much easier to have 
a filter in place and not even have to look to see who each message is 
from. I go through newsgroups using the space bar to move down to the 
next message.

With some trolls, maybe. But as I said, if you're dealing with a troll 
it's foolhardy to rely on any information he provides being any good.

For 20 years I've always used the handle "Philo."

I used to be on the Win95 & Win98 groups.

After I got the hang of Windows, I started using Linux as well.

I just use whichever OS does the job best, so use Win 10 to do most of my work.

Of course now most of us use oUr phones and I've had mine for many years but am only now exploring functions I've never used before.

That 20 year went pretty fast.

Back in the 60's when I was in school during the the punch card days, I 
took FORTRAN IV.

After I got a job, I returned to school and was dismayed that as late as 
1979 I still had to use punch cards.
By 1982 I swore I'd never touch a computer again.

Except for doing my inventory at work, I pretty much kept that promise 
until my (now) wife gave me her old P-1 around 1999.

After I got Win95 figured out, before I went on, I had to go back and 
learned the stuff I missed...so had to learn DOS and Win3x.

Had no problem obtaining truckloads of 286's and 386's etc.

Now, most of the time, I'm just using my phone

Depends on the particular troll. On most of them I simply tag the
message with a different colour (and tag name) that warns me. But on
very bad trolls I kill the subthread. Improves the peace.
