The hardware list dates are in the link. https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en > they can run android apps, but how well? In my personal experience with this Chrome OS device: Out of the 40 or so Android apps I've tried a few wouldn't run, another few won't run full screen, and another few were greyed out in the Play Store and couldn't be downloaded. The rest run as well as they do on my Android OS devices. Bottom line: You're pretty much SOL if the Android app you want won't run...

I've only got 4 years left on this recently purchased Chromebook since it was an older model (on sale).

The POS software company should keep up, but will they. They do risk losing their PCI certification, if they don't. The non-replaceable battery gets my goat.

Number crunching its the issue. Due to privacy reasons, I can not tell you the software. Sorry. It is a half cloud / half local app that run a YUGE database So, basically, I am after number crunching. The vendor who does not want to be discouraging, says it will run on any Android, but obviously, he isn't going to say anything about crappy performance. He just wants to make a sale. "Look at the wonderful things it will do on tablet"

The apps work fine on other brand tablets that have software on-screen buttons. Personally I dislike those hardware buttons because they're always there to accidentally push which I always seem to do... YMMV.

I may have to compromise on Samsung.

You seem to want others to do your professional work for you - where a quick Google would give you your answer. I was answering 123456789's post. It's irrelevant to your OP.

And if "the current el-cheap-o tablets" "are excruciatingly slow", the don't buy "el-cheap-o tablets", but but one with decent specs. 'Problem' solved.
