The vast majority has roaming included in their contracts. Try to
understand what you read.

The roaming protection in the EU is an adiminitrative verdict and has
nothing to do with market. Au contraire.

And the UK will lose the portection with the Brexit witha high degree of

We'll see, but personally I doubt it, the inclusive roaming includes
non-EU countries.

Don't worry, *I* do read and understand what I read. Maybe you should
do the same. "included in their contracts" means they *do* pay extra,
because the price per month depends on the amount of roaming.

Is that ten altogether, or ten in memory at once? (If ten altogether,

Ten altogether. You can remove the app and reinstall it, 10 again.
Probably also delete all the application data would also work. In both
cases you also lose all settings and labels, stored places.

I also wanted the altitude data, which is another pay plugin to display it.

[Carlos already answered that.]

The pay version is only 6 Euro [1] and for that they don't just
maintain the app, but also maintain and update the maps and run their
server(s). I've been using the pay version for nearly 4 years now, on as
many devices as I want. IMO, it's a steal.

FWIW, I don't like apps where you have to pay upfront, before you've
had the opportunity to check if it suits your needs. But limit-ware or
trial-ware - if done sensibly - is fine by me.

[1] I.e. probably some 60 pounds! :-)

Is the reason for Google's tiny area in comparison _because_ of its
dynamic nature (has details of repairs, traffic etc.), or some other
reason?

it's multiple tiles, with the overall area varying in size & shape,
typically covering roughly 15-30 minutes of driving in any direction,
and likely biased to places you normally frequent (which google knows).
it also depends how far you zoom in. the more detail shown, the smaller
the range.

> Is the reason for Google's tiny area in comparison _because_ of its

the former.

google maps was designed to be used with a full time data connection,
where map data is downloaded on demand as well as current traffic data,
road closures, etc. using it without a data connection may 'work', but
it's going to be extremely limiting, to the point of non-functional, as
it was never designed to work that way. a small portion is cached, but
it's not that hard to overdrive the boundary.

other map products are designed to not need a data connection, instead
using preloaded maps, which takes up valuable space on the device and
may not have the latest up to date information.

some might use a mix of both, with preloaded maps but obtaining current
traffic data.

I have a single offline area on my tablet that covers more of England

Plus you can have multiple offline areas.

To save data Google allows WiFi map downloads before your trip. So the
only data used is for updates and is minuscule. Data plans are very
cheap these days. We (2 phones in the family) live on 2GB/mo (+ 1mo
rollover) and seldom use close to half. YMMV should you get a data plan

I know, but I was just speaking of traffic warnings. The Garmin does
those as long as the unit is plugged in -- the cord is the antenna.
Hrm. I wonder if it works if you don't plug the cord into the cigarette

My voice plan is $10/year. I have a 200MB/month freedompop hotspot for
emergencies and hardly ever use it. Virtually ANY monthly fee is too

Prepaid T-Mobile account, discontinued but grandfathered. As long as I
buy $10 worth of minutes once a year the ~600 I have roll over. I use
it as a camera more often, but it's kind of disappointing. I'd be

Same here, except I don't have to pay once a year. I can't remember how
many years since I bought the SIM and put ten pounds on it, but last
time I looked there was still about seven left ...

(I do have to use it occasionally to keep the number alive, but that's
universal, isn't it?)

I've never seen a system like that here -- Just buy a chunk of
voice/data that lasts forever and buy more when you run out.

If he had any brains, he'd take them out and play with them.

they exist. a few mvnos offer pay for what you use, either on an
ongoing basis or a block of data to last as long as it does.
