I'm deciding on an upgrade from my current phone, and I've sort of come down to two phones right now. What are your opinions on the following phones (good vs. bad): (1) Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra: Android O 8.0, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 8-core Snapdragon 630 (2) Samsung Galaxy A8: Android 7.1, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 8-core Exynos 7885.

If the phone is provided by a telephone company, tied to a plan, and customized, then the update, if it exists, comes via that company instead. Some companies add their own apps, for instance. If not, well, whoever shells that phone should know his own business and know if it will be upgraded to 8 or not. It's the phone service provider that provides any updates for the phone. My last phone, also purchased through the service provider, had no updates beyond the security patches. It came with Android 6.0.1, and it remains on 6.0.1 to this day. They did provide a slightly modified kernel to enable Wi-Fi Calling and that's about it in all of this time. I'm not too concerned about the version of the Android system it comes with, unless there's some major reason to want to have 8.1 vs. 7.1. Yousuf Khan

I don't :-) What I know is that certain application that came installed with the phone, and has the name of my ISP on it, is still there when I do the upgrade and can not be removed. Who feeds the upgrade to me doesn't matter much, but that ISP provided phone will not upgrade unless both manufacturer and ISP agree on creating the upgrade, so that it keeps the factory supplied ISP app. Which poses an interesting (for me) question. I was recently in Canada and it was close to impossible to buy a free phone, not linked to a telephone company and a plan. At places like Walmart or Best Buy there were just three or four *old* free models, and many non free models. Why? In Spain it is the reverse. Just curious... In fact, if I went to the Motorola.ca web site, selected a model, then clicked on where to buy, it took me to an ISP site, not to a free shop. -- Cheers, Carlos.

It's been like that for years in North America, that's the way that the market developed right from the beginning of the cell phone era. However, that's changing now in Canada, laws were passed to prevent phone provider lock-in; however, the US is still the same as it always has been. The laws only came into effect last year, so the changes are happening slowly. These days providers are no longer allowed to create locked phones, so you can bring along your phone between service providers. I've been able to buy Blackberry phones directly from their web store or through Ebay or Amazon, for example. You can buy other brands from Ebay or Amazon too. Yousuf Khan

Yes, I saw that we could obtain the Motorola G6+ from Amazon (which is my preferred mid range model at the moment), but it was the international version, which apparently lacks some of the frequencies used in Canada or USA, the comments said (LTE?). Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing right now, I am comparing which range of LTE bands each of these phones support, and choosing based on that among other things. My PSP in Canada has a range of 5 different bands that they use, but most phones only support about 4 of those 5 so far. On top of that, I also travel to South Asia quite often, so I need a phone that supports the LTE bands available there. Interestingly, South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.) have all seemed to have standardized onto 3 LTE bands which are the same throughout the region: all providers, all countries. So they are more standardized than the providers in North America! So I need a phone that supports the 5 bands of my Canadian PSP, and the 3 bands in South Asia. After much deliberation, I found that the two that I've listed seem to have the best combination of LTE band support, price, RAM, etc. The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra vs. Samsung Galaxy A8. The Sony is a bit cheaper, the Samsung supports one more LTE band.
