Lots of reasons. Just for starters... a. What's the big deal if I did get a virus? b. Would an AV program have found a virus? c. Does that AV program slow things down? etc.

On android (without root) each app is 'sandboxed' from all other apps, so it is impossible for an AV app to inspect the files of any other apps. All that AV apps on android do is make a list of what apps you've got installed and send it back to HQ where the AV company's servers look at the files of their copy of the same apps, and hope those are the same files that you have on your device ...
