There is no proven lack of security with using a bank app on a phone.

No. Why would it?

Please don't confuse lack of privacy (and google does not disclose
individualized and private data about an individual) with lack of
security - like looking inside your bank account and stealing money.

a. What's the big deal if I did get a virus?
b. Would an AV program have found a virus?
c. Does that AV program slow things down?

On android (without root) each app is 'sandboxed' from all other apps, 
so it is impossible for an AV app to inspect the files of any other apps.

All that AV apps on android do is make a list of what apps you've got 
installed and send it back to HQ where the AV company's servers look at 
the files of their copy of the same apps, and hope those are the same 
files that you have on your device ...
