Many people probably share that misconception based on how DSL used to
perform better than cable broadband because there was no sharing of the
bandwidth from the home to the Central Office (as opposed to cable
broadband). The reality is that the call capacity of the copper network
is limited.

Just like many bridges charge tolls for only one direction, it all evens
out. Charge 2x to the caller and nothing to the receiver.

> [1] Only the 'Local loop'/'Last mile' part is non-shared.

True, but with AT&t fiber to the home that's often not true anymore either.

It is not a shared network in anyway that is commonly accepted as a
definition of "shared network".

No, you are entirely wrong on that.

Well, I'm only doing networks since the (very) early 70's, so what the
hell do I know!?

BTW, can you please pull the wires a bit back on your end, because
they are a bit longish on my end? Thanks.

But you fail to say *why*!

So pray tell, *which* *other* part(s) is/are non-shared as well?

they absolutely do. nothing is free.

it's either included in the base rate or it's per minute, depending on
provider and plan and in some cases, they pay an additional charge for
cnam dips.

Actually, for CDMA, one of the big advantages was that call capacity was
elastic because a cell could adjust bit rates dynamically, reducing call
quality slightly to add more calls. Variable rate codecs in handsets
also helped increase capacity.

Landline capacity expansion is incredibly expensive.

We don't anymore, just broadband, electricity, plumbing and gas.

There is no landline phone service anymore, its all voip over broadband.

Well standard copper pair landline is going away, but a "landline"
doesn't have to be over a copper pair.

It'll be a long time before the copper goes away completely. The first
step was FTTN to eliminate the need to run copper back to the Central
Office, and only the last few hundred feet was copper, but now both the
cable companies and the phone companies are doing FTTH. I can get fiber
from either Comcast or AT&T. I have a pole in my backyard and they kept
needing to come into my yard to string the fiber.

Sure, but we wont be having any POTS/PSTN service at all all voip or mobile.

Bet it will quite a while in some places.

It can be well over a km here.

We originally were going to have just that, but stupidly changed to FTTN,
FTTC, HFC and fixed wireless as well. New major subdivisions are FTTH tho.

Our fiber is almost entirely underground.

I was talking to our sheriff (we don't have our won police force in my
city) and one issue with so many people dropping landlines (whether VOIP
or POTS) is that the 911 call center doesn't automatically know the
address when someone calls from their cell phone. GPS location works
okay for single family homes where the phone can get a GPS fix when
inside, but homes with steel roofs, mobile homes, and multi-floor condos
and apartment buildings are a problem. On your Android phone you can
check satellites in view and signal strength and you can see how it
varies. On an iPhone, you'll have to use an external GPS device
<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nmea-gps/id590868529?mt=8>.

Until a few years ago, the ILECs were required to provide warm line
service so 911 still worked even if you didn't subscribe to POTS. A few
judicious campaign contributions got that law changed.
<http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/07/business/la-fi-phone-911-20100707>;
bad for public safety but good for AT&T, Verizon, and the legislators.

I moved my POTS to Google Voice + Obi
<https://www.obitalk.com/info/googlevoice> which is free, but E911
service is $1.50 per month through Callcentric.

Many people still keep VOIP or POTS landlines for alarms, though there
are cellular options as well (which will have to be replaced when GSM
and CDMA are shutdown).

Then the 911 call center hasn't implemented the upgrade to support e911.

e911 uses far more than just GPS. Don't know who you talked to, but they
know very little.

LOL, you need to educate yourself.

You can begin here: <https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-15-9A1.pdf>

Even when E911 requires enhanced location, it's still only required to
50 meters in the x and y axis. That's not good enough even for single
story duplexes or many single family homes that are close together.

50M seems ridiculously easy until you try getting a GPS fix in some
types of home construction if you're not near a window. Outside I get 5M
accuracy. Inside a metal roof you may get 35M or no GPS fix at all.

The z axis is another story entirely and is much more difficult.

There's not even an option to register a cellular number to specific
addresses. I think that this would be ideal since if the GPS location is
within 50M or so of the physical address then most of the time it could
be assumed to be at that physical address.

Bottom line is that when you call E911 from a cell phone in an indoor
location, be prepared to verbally speak the location.

It's ridiculously cheap to put in a VOIP landline with E911 service if
you already have broadband Internet. Currently it's $18 per year.

There's some initial one-time costs:

Obi Device: $50-70
UPS for cable modem/router: $50-70 (300-600VA)

You can also pay to port your existing landline or cellular number to
Google Voice though this isn't required.

in addition to the link in my other post,
<http://time.com/5314647/iphone-911-rapidsos/>
Under the new system, iPhones will send their exact location to a
RapidSOS dispatcher, which will then forward the coordinates to local
emergency response centers. That should make it easier for ambulances
and paramedics to reach callers and shave precious minutes off
response times, potentially saving 10,000 lives per year, according
  to federal regulator estimates.

then you're doing it wrong.

location aware apps normally can obtain the exact gps location and
reverse it to the correct address, and if there's a map view, can show
which part of the property the person is at.

for that reason, i've disabled location on some apps, such as weather,
which doesn't need to be *that* exact.

> The z axis is another story entirely and is much more difficult.

no.

nor is it a particularly good idea for all sorts of reasons.

They do here.

Works fine here and I have steel roof and mostly steel and concrete block
walls.

Don’t need to, I can see that google maps gets my location right every time.

We've only recently had that, but its no longer relevant now that
you cant have a POTS/PSTN service even if you want it now.

Given that there is no longer any POTS/PSTN service available
here, in the unlikely event that you still want one, all the
broadband services provide a voip service for free.

But most just use their mobile. I don’t use my voip service
at all anymore unless the mobile towers are all dead and
that doesn’t happen here even with an area wide mains
failure and then the broadband wouldn’t be working anyway.

> Many people still keep VOIP or POTS landlines for alarms,

We don’t, because POTS/PSTN isnt available anymore.
Mobile works fine.

> though there are cellular options as well (which will have to be replaced

We shut down CDMA decades ago and 2G
GSM has just been shut down recently here.

Interesting.

I was working with Samsung when they installed the Orange network for
Hutchison in Sydney and Melbourne. That was CDMA, and used Samsung
equipment. Samsung were the prime contractor

That was around the beginning of 2000. I know they sold Orange to
another operator not so long after it was completed, but I'm surprised
CDMA lasted for such a short period of time.

CDMA was shut down in Australia in 2008 (one decade ago, not "decades."

2G shut down in June 2018.

Not clear what replaced CDMA in the remote regions since GSM signals
have a much shorter range. CDMA and AMPS were actually ideal for remote
areas. "The reliability of the network, and its widespread coverage of
about 98 per cent of the population, saw CDMA gain parochial support
throughout the bush."

CDMA is the reason that Verizon ended up with so much better coverage in
rural areas in the U.S. as well.

no, that's not why. the reason is they updated their existing analog

The main replacement was and is Telstra's UMTS at 850MHz (not
2100Mhz). Other telcos use other frequencies in rural/outback/remote/
<whatever> regions.
