CDMA was deployed relatively late in Australia to cover rural regions because GSM 2G had tdma air interface with a 30km range limit. ( with time division, signal had to travel; and reach destination within the short allocated time slot, otherwise it was assumed to come from another phone) CDMA which used a cdma air interface did not have that hard 30km limit. In flat areas, this makes a difference. When GMS went 3G, it adopted a cdma air interface for the GSM protocols and this eliminated the distance/range limitations that GSM 2G had.

Unfortunately, while NextG offers much faster data speeds than CDMA offerred, the rural coverage decreased dramatically. The sentiment has been that CDMA was preferred in terms of making a simple phone call, but that NextG is preferred for data usage. The problem is that NextG coverage is poorer than CDMA coverage was.

That's not my experince, but heh, I've only been several (about three) times 'around the world' in Oz, most of it in 'rural' (/outback/bush/ remote/<whatever>) areas, so what do I know!? Just kidding. I only have practical experience with NextG coverage and only thereoretical (i.e. coverage maps/listings) experience with CDMA.

There is also the "caller-pays" for voice calls that is present in so many European countries. Some of the prepaid SIM cards take full advantage of this system with their automatic call back.

Do try to keep up with the thread. We were not talking about OTHER carriers. Lewis specifically made reference to using a UK SIM card in India and claimed that incoming SMS messages would be charged for. In response to that specific message I said. "That's for SENDING texts to the UK while you're roaming. Texts RECEIVED on your phone while you are roaming are free of charge, as they are everywhere." You then poked your nose in, cut out the reference to using a UK SIM card, and tried to twist the context around to using other carriers. Once again, if you use a UK SIM card while roaming you do not pay for incoming SMS message. In fact most other networks in the world operate on that basis. The only networks I'm aware of that differ from that are American and Colombian. Nobody else charges for incoming SMS.

You said they are free, they are not. If you leave you UK SIM in your phone in India, and you get a text, you will pay 35p. If you get a call, you will pay £1.25 per minute. the only way to avoid that is to disable your UK SIM or remove it from a phone. Having a dual-SIM phone would only cost you much much more money. > QED. You obviously have no idea what that means, since you have failed to prove anything at all. -- A bartender is just a pharmacist with a limited inventory.

If you leave you UK SIM in your >phone in India, and you get a text, you will pay 35p. No you won't. I've been to India plenty of times and incoming SMS messages are free when roaming with a UK SIM card. None of the UK networks charge for incoming SMS anywhere in the world, and neither do the vast majority of other networks.

SMS messages are free to receive while roaming with almost every network. I've been using mobile phones in dozens of countries around the world since 1994 and I have NEVER been charged for an incoming SMS while roaming. See what I mean about you needing to get some real life world experience before you get involved in discussion that are out of your depth. No insult intended.

I've been using mobile phones in dozens of countries around > the world since 1994 and I have NEVER been charged for an incoming SMS > while roaming. That is true with most prepaid country-specific SIM cards and many prepaid global SIM cards. Incoming calls are also often free, or charged at low rates, due to "caller pays." However this has led to some abusive practices, with some global SIM cards assigning phone numbers in countries which cost a lot to call, especially Estonia. One of the lowest cost international long distance services charges 36.5¢ to call a mobile phone in Estonia, while calling a mobile phone in Germany is 5.2¢, U.K. is 2.3¢, and China is 1.2¢. Inside China, a lot of people use WeChat instead of SMS, and in India WhatsApp is most popular. In the U.S., these messaging apps have not been as popular for general use. I'm on WeChat and WhatsApp because my Chinese and Indian colleagues use them. > See what I mean about you needing to get some real life world > experience before you get involved in discussion that are out of your > depth. No insult intended. Those that don't travel outside their home country simply do not understand that the whole world is not the same as the U.S.. And it doesn't have to be expensive to travel to most countries if you get over the need to stay in expensive hotels.
