You just have to get there before the store opens. Every Costco station
I've seen opens at 6am.

UNLESS their card gets refused. In a good system a trapdoor would open
beneath the offending customer. Big sign saying WE USE A FISCAL
RESPONSIBILITY SYSTEM with an appropriate picture at each register. It
could work.

Of course not. Just get there half an hour before the store opens.

No idea how much I get back. Multiple cards, probably less than $100
each. Still, free money is free money!

There's always SOMETHING. I apparently have this mysterious aura that
causes problems of one sort or another with customers in front of me
after I've already put my stuff on the belt just before a new checker
opens up a line and I'm trapped by the customers behind me. It happens
too often to be mere coincidence.
Worst is old ladies searching for the exact change in their coin purses.
Worse than that if the old ladies are younger than me :-(

Card agreements generally forbid the merchant from "swapping". Gas
stations are an exception. (They don't do it anywhere in Canada to my
knowledge (certainly not in Quebec)).

No. The debt belongs to the bank underwriting the card user - not the
CC co.
The rewards programs are offered by the card company (MasterCard, Visa,
etc.) in order to win over new clients. More clients, more
transactions, more fees for the card company. They don't hold debt for
longer than the 28 - 61 day float window (if even that long).
Whatever the reward, it is passed onto the merchant, in full (and
perhaps more).

At both Costco's here the lineups are not worth the savings. Besides
local gas stations reduce their prices to remain competitive - so comes
to a half / one cent per litre difference. The 25 - 50 cent savings for
me is not worth waiting.

Go early, they open at 6am around here. What I find amazing is that the
Union station down at the corner charges $1/gallon more than the Arco
stations half a mile away. Lotta people out there with more money than
brains.

The two closest Costco's (with gasoline) are too far away to bother
changing my schedule just to save 25 - 50 cents.

I've spent a lifetime ganging errands together and try to time my Costco
trips (10 miles away) to when I need 3/4 tank, roughly once a month.
Then I hit Walmart, Aldi's, the 99-Cent Store and whatever else is on
the way.
There are real advantages to being retired. It may also be noted that
paying attention to opportunities to save money allowed us to retire a
lot earlier than most people.
I like to think that by buying 10 gallons at Costco I'm not only saving
$10 but getting 4% back, which beats inflation, AND I'm saving money by
ganging errands AND saving money because of the places I shop AND it
costs me less than a gallon of gas ($3.39/gallon this week) to do it.

I've always ganged errands and even plan the route for least waste.
Still, the Costco we go to does not have gas, and in any case I'm still
not waiting in line to save 25 - 50 cents. That would come to $25 - $50
in 20 years - all to wait in line wasting gas idling (or re-starting the
engine) - not to mention time better used on something else.
I'm all for efficiency - except when it's illusory, poor return or time
wasting.

I mostly buy non-perishables -- canned stuff, OTC drugs, sometimes
electronics. Frozen stuff too.

Ralph's here does something like that, but I don't buy enough groceries
there (thanks, Costco!) to get anything better than a 10-cent discount
and the only station is almost as far away as Costco :-(
Curiously enough, Sam's Club's gas is only a little more expensive than
Costco's, but the lines are way shorter. Sam's Club is just about as
far away as Costco :-( They have similar stuff, but different, and the
prices are slightly higher.

Off-topic annoyance: last time I went to Costco there was a long line
at the food court so I tried phoning in my pizza order, intending to
pick it up when I was finished shopping. Imagine my joy when I was told
at the pizza window that I would have to stand in line to pay for it
before I could pick it up.
I walked off in a huff without the pizza. What a stupid thing. All
they have to do is get your CC number on the phone and have you sign the
receipt when you pick it up, but NOOOO!

I shop at the cheapest places and hardly ever buy expensive stuff. I
use the card that offers the best rebate depending on what I'm buying.
I also bend over to pick up pennies in the street. Free money is free
money.
Yeah, I know, Bill Gates can't afford to pick up even $20s in the street
(which I actually did ONCE!), but I'm not Bill Gates.

Consider these cards: > > Citibank Double Cash (2%, no fee). > Alliant Credit Union (3%, no fee the first year, 2.5% $59 fee subsequent > years) None of ours in Australia have any discount for cash but our merchant fees are much lower. A few retailers wouldn’t allow the use of a card for transactions of lower value than $5, but even that is uncommon now. None of our fee free cards have any discount for cash, presumably because the much lower merchant fees can't pay for that.

AND Costco has extra-long hoses so you can park on either side of the
island without worrying about smashing your side mirror. This is
apparently a secret because the lanes on the left side of the island are
nearly always shorter.
If I'm not going to Costco I buy gas for cash at the Arco station, which
I hate because of their stupid short hoses and because I invariably get
to stand behind some jerk buying food, lottery tickets and cigarettes as
well as gas and his debit card gets refused so he has to dig out the
cash and can't remember where he keeps his wallet :-(
I realize that the additional 35 cents to use a debit card at the pump
is a minuscule amount of money to worry about, but 3 trips = what I was
paid per hour in my first job. Some things you just don't forget!
BTW, Freedompop is running another dirt-cheap promotion now.
