Seems to me there should be some easy way, if I call someone or someone
calls me, to put the number in my contact list, but I can't find it. 

IF you tell me there is one, I'll keep looking. 

If you tell me how to do it, I will come and sweep your kitchen floor
for a week.

Probably depends on whose 'Dialler' app you're using, but the stock one 
works just how you'd like ...

Interesting.  I got "This app is incompatible with all of your devices."
I've never gotten that before. 

I've already got Duo, and Block this phone number, but not all of the
features mentioned. 

I've got a communist Chinese phone, that's probably the reason.

Yes, you have you enable "install from 3rd party/untrusted sites" but 
APM mirror is used by Android Police, so should be trustworthy, disable 
the setting again afterwards, then you should get a choice between using 
the communist dialler and the capitalist dialler :-)

You need to decide what combination of DPI and CPU your device has to 
pick the closest APK to install.

If it doesn't work, you can uninstall it like any other app.

Given that the stock dialler can create a contact for a number (or add a 
number to an existing contact) I'd be surprised if manufacturer 
"skinned" diallers can't do it too, but I have very little exposure to 
non-nexus devices.

and a digital record of what we say.

On my S4, under the number that I dialed, or called me, is a "Create 
Contact" button (Android 5.0.1). Did they take that away in 7?

If you're looking to add that contact to a distribution list, then create 
the contact, edit it, and select the list you created (or want to create) 
under Groups.

It's not there in mine but it's been fiddled with by Xiaomi.   Still,
this seems basic and that everyone would want it. 

I can't even separate the incoming Recent from outgoing Recent.

I'm trying to avoid having to type in the number.   It seems to be too
much work for me, plus I'd have to write it on paper to know what it is
when I'm entering it into contacts.

I know my phone has it. 
But you have to use the same app.

Mine is  com.android.providers.telephony, version 5.30.51.

I don't know how this APK stuff works well enough to tell you whether
that's a Google generic "phone" APK or if it's an LG customized phone APK.

Can others advise the OP?
Is it possible for the OP to download the APK that I have?

If needed, I can upload my APK to a web site for the OP to download.
(I'll give you the hash - but you have to trust me on the APK validity).

In internalstorage\android\data I have folders for
com.android.providers.downloads and ...downloads.ui

Well, couldnt' find any app with telephon... in it, let alone what you
have. 

Most of the apps have easy to recognize names, but this one is
probabably hidden so they can transcribe my calls.

* During the call the 3-dots menu has an add contact option.

* After the call it gives an add contact button, but only for a few seconds.

* When you type or recall the last number in the dialer the 3-dots menu
  has an option to add contact.

* On the recent calls, find the number and tap the details button. The detail
  screen has a create contact option.

It's hard to test because I don't want to call just any old person and
the people I'm willing to call, myself or a good friend, are already in
the Contacts, so the options will be different. I'm going to look up a
business with a computer switchboard and practice on them.

If you have a landline, delete it from your contacts and use that. You will
be able to make and receive calls for testing.

When there are no menus around, try long pressing on things, like the
phone number, to see if a menu pops up.

I usually forget that, but I rmemebered and a menu did, but it didn't
have anything that worked.  The closest-sounding thing was Edit, but
that just took me back to a screen where I can take that number, modify
it, and dial my call.   I posted about this somewhere in this thread.
