Cheers, -- tlvp Costco has two tiers or membership, $55.00 and $110.00. The $110.00 is for Executive Membership and includes cash back on your purchases. I purchase enough each year so that I get more back in cash than the extra $55.00 cost over the basic membership. As for the "security" measures when leaving the store, it's been nothing more than a nuisance. It's been a very rare occurrence when the person checking at the exit does nothing more than take the receipt and puts a mark on it without ever checking what I have in my basket.

You get cash back with the cheap membership too. Or is that only if you
use their credit card?
Daughter has a Sam's Club exec membership and gave me the extra card.
It's closer to her house. Sam's is a Costco clone, except the products
are slightly different and cost slightly more. Costco has THICK Hormel
pre-cooked bacon (which is very good, BTW) and Sam has THIN. Also good.

Security theater. Fry's (Electronics, not groceries) does that too, but
they actually compare the receipt to what's in your bag. Mostly, anyway.

That's if you use their credit card. I have an Executive Membership and don't use their credit card and I get cash back. I use my own Visa card now, I get airline tickets with my points. Prior to this past summer, Costco accepted only Amex so I've been using my debit card for all the years I've been a member. > > Daughter has a Sam's Club exec membership and gave me the extra card. > It's closer to her house. The Costco door security check was not one of my complaints. It was relatively quick (for me). Not so the cash register checkout lines. They generally were 8+ baskets deep. The stores here are just too popular (for me). Perhaps it's because they're located near several large retirement communities. BTW my local Best Buy has the same type of security checkout as Costco. And many of my local stores (Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc) have those electronic theft detection panels at the door. If your cashier forgets to cancel the theft device in your package at checkout, you cause quite a racket walking out and perhaps more of a hassle than Costco while they rummage through your cart. I don't begrudge the stores their security precautions. Theft is a big problem for them. And they have to raise prices to cover it. If those security procedures work it helps reduce the cost to them and hopefully for the rest of us. BTW the one thing I really liked about Costo was the return policy. It seemed that they would take anything back at any time for any reason, no hassle. Maybe things are different now. They had to lose a few bucks on that policy that was so easy to abuse.

People abused the return policy by using it to continually upgrade their computers so the policy was amended.

If those > security procedures work it helps reduce the cost to them and hopefully > for the rest of us. they do it to catch dishonest cashiers who 'forget' to charge a customer for an item.

However if that person can produce a receipt for what was stuffed into his pocket after being locked up, he can sue for false arrest and win the suit. At least that's true (or was true) in New York. It was about 50 years ago, but I remember a neighbor, who was a NYC cop, telling me the story of someone who went into the rest room in Macy's, and put on a piece of clothing from the store. He was observed by a video camera in the store and the police were called to arrest him as he left the store. As the key was being turned in the cell lock, he reached into his pocket and said " Oh, here's the receipt." The cops laughed, because they knew exactly what he was doing and they hated Macy's.

I can't vouch for its being true, but I did believe my neighbor. Why did he wait until the key was being turned? Presumably to strengthen his lawsuit. Or perhaps he didn't wait, and my memory is faulty.

Not if they are going to sue for false arrest, stupid.

In my jurisdiction (IMJ) even having a civil contract's permission to search won't allow them to physically detain you against your wishes without probable cause. But being uncooperative would likely lose you your membership and get you a no return to the store trespass warning. Then if you do return you could be arrested for trespassing. > however, normal stores, such as best buy, target, etc. *cannot* stop > or detain someone without probable cause that they shoplifted. for > a normal customer going through the checkout lane, there is no pc to > detain. they can ask, but they *must* accept 'no' as an answer. Same as Costco (above) except for the membership loss. IMJ cooperative petty shoplifters are now issued criminal citations and released. It saves taxpayers the booking costs. The professionals (priors, booster pockets, fake returns, etc) are still booked. The trespass warnings are given to all. Occasionally one was later found by store security and re-booked. > now, if someone saw someone stuff something into a jacket pocket and > then leave, they *do* have probable cause to detain and/or arrest, > but that's *very* different than normal customers buying stuff. IMJ concealment alone is illegal. But most security personnel I've worked with (in my former life) waited until they left the store since it makes for a better case. > the cashier may have some explaining to do for forgetting to > neutralize the anti-theft device, but that's the cashier's problem, > not yours. In my experience they forgot to charge a friend/customer/husband/etc. That's what those cameras over the checkouts are for. When caught both got arrested.

The store employees are just trying to make a living. No use being an asshole just because it's your lawful right.

Considering that the best estimates are that 85% of "shrinkage" is employees, I do not like the receipt checks and for a normal store, that is enough to get me not to go. Membership stores are different as you know up front about it. The last time I was at Best Buy was bout 5 or 7 years ago and they asked to check my receipt and I said "No" and kept walking. They guy yelled at me, so I've not been back. The walk from the register to the door was about five feet, and the door monitor had watched me pay, so asking to check my receipt was asinine. > And they have to raise prices to cover it. Their return policy is very good, they treat their employees well, and I go often enough that I recognize most of the employees at the three Costcos I go to most often. -- For a very few, the sky's the limit. And, sometimes, not even that.

I don't mind taking a moment to cooperate with REASONABLE security. Take the receipt out of the bag for him, smile and ask him how his day is going. Bet you'll get a whole different response. > so I've not been back. I've also said that when I've been really pissed at treatment I've gotten at a store (or restaurant). But trouble is after a while I really missed going to the store. I was the one being punished, not the store (which didn't miss me at all).
