Samsung's flavor of v5.0.1.

.CSV files, opened via "Sheets".

I get the "Open with Sheets" dialog and click "Always", and it throws
the "Clear defaults" dialog and I hit "OK".

But it never seems to learn: on every succeeding Open of a .CSV I get
the same "Open with... ' dialog - even if I open A.CSV, close it, and
then immediately open A.CSV again.

Doesn't seem right....

Nokia's flavour of 5.1.1

.csv file downloaded, open file (from androzip but I doubt that's relevant)

first time I get asked to choose between "sheets" and "se text editor",
I choose the former and press "always"

subsequent times I open the file, it automatically uses "sheets"

the "clear defaults" dialogue never raises itself here, that would seem
to be your problem, what if you press the back triangle instead of OK?

Per Andy Burns:
>.csv file downloaded, open file.....

I think I'm on to something.

The sequence of events I described was around opening the file where it
resides on my NAS box (i.e. over the LAN).

I copied the file to the phone's external SD card, and it behaves
normally: Open, answer "Always"... and subsequent opens do not throw the
dialog.

X-Plore is the file manager.

I also notice some weirdness when using X-Plore to play videos.

MX Player and "Always" work OK over the LAN (as opposed to Sheets/.CSV
files) but when I quit a vid playing under MX Player on the LAN it fails
to remember where it was when I quit an starts over at the beginning.
OTOH, if the vid is on the phone's SD card MX Player remembers where it
was and resumes at that point.

Maybe something around storing parms/settings for files opened over the
LAN vs files opened locally?

Do other Open With settings stick? Probably not, I guess.

What follows was written when I thought this was a PC ng. ;-(

Doesn't seem likely but the usual explanation for things like this is
that the file is read only or it's in a protected area.

One of the fun things I do is run Search Everything, sort by date, start
the search field with C:\ and then leave a space for other parts of the
file name that doen abut the \, and then watch what file changes when I
do something. It's usually 5 or 10 files down from the top because
windows writes to so many files all the time. Of course, if it can't
update the file, this might not show anything. But it's still fun. (I
don't get out much.)
