Happy New Year! Cheers, -- tlvp buy a jack and change your own tires. 10-15 minutes later and you're on your way. that'll be done well before aaa (or anyone else for that matter) shows up, and if you're many miles from the nearest service, it could be a *really* long wait for that someone to get to you. but to answer your question, if there's cellular service for making voice calls, then there's cellular data to use voip. it's a complete non-issue that you've made up. not only that, but if you're worried about calling for help, then you don't even need an active service plan. all cellphones must be able to call 911. you don't need anything more than a working phone.

Let me expand just a bit on the term flat as used in the USA for tires/tyres: it may well refer to a puncture; or to a blown-out sidewall; or to a detached tread; or to a rim beaten so out of shape by a curbstone as to have lost the integrity of ts airseal with the tyre/tire. As for AAA ... well, context counts for a lot, doesn't it :-) ? In any event, to start the new year off on the right foot, my apologies to all whom I may have confused, offended, or otherwise upset. As regards AAA we just assume anything we know about but with an extra A (or other letter) is the yanks trying to go one better! :-) e.g. our AA (Automobile Association) becomes the AAA, our IEE becomes IEEE, etc. :-) -- Chris Green ยท

A drunk has a flat tyre (see, I can spell Brit too!) and makes a call.
Instead of a mechanic in a truck he gets some sympathy and a cup of
coffee. Am I the only one who sees a problem here?

Last time I had occasion to call the (A)AA it was for a blowout in a
parking lot -- rather than when I was driving down the mountain road, a
good thing. Unfortunately my mom had put wheel locks on the car and I
couldn't find the wrench. The (A)AA guys didn't have the proper tool to
crack the damn thing off, so they called a flatbed to take it to my
favorite Discount Ti|yre Store. I would think that a nutcracker would
be a standard tool for (A)AA, but NOOOOO!
When I was getting ready to take the car to the knackers (3 years later)
I found the tool. Feh.

That's probably what the thieves who stole my mom's wheels OUT OF HER
CARPORT did. She had new ones put on the new wheels. I wish she'd
asked my advice before she bought that POS 88 Caddy :-(

You know how dumb the average person is?
Well, by definition, half are *even dumber*!

That's why I'm with Green Flag, no confusion at all!

Happy New Year! Cheers, -- tlvp Whether "there's VOIP available" has only to do with you, your phone, etc.. The location is irrelevant, but of course there must be mobile coverage, which is also needed for a normal non-VOIP - i.e. non-data - voice call. So if you have some kind of data plan, have enabled mobile data and have a VOIP app such as Skype, you will have "VOIP available" everywhere where you have normal (non-VOIP/non-data) voice calling [1]. Happy New Year to you as well. [1] Actually in low-signal areas, VOIP might work better than normal voice or VOIP might work while normal voice won't.

Sorry, Frank, you're right of course. I was thinking, though, that I'd only wind up using VOIP over a wi-fi connection, because the proposition was to use VOIP instead of making a voice call using a SIM with very limited voice minutes. Such a SIM has an even more limited allotment of data, no? (Mine, for example, for its trimestrial $10, offers me up to 80 minutes of voice, up to 10 MB of data, or any sub-convex combination thereof.) So wi-fi was all my mind was blinkered to see. /Mea culpa/. Cheers, -- tlvp -- Avant de repondre, jeter la poubelle, SVP.
