In the early days, there were EmPower adaptors installed by some airlines. Limited power at low DC voltage. It was a "proprietary" plug to ensure you had the right approved hardware to plug into it. (remember, everything that plugs into an aircraft has to be approved). Can't remember if it was 12 or 18VDC. Use of any electronics in the aircraft has to be validated as safe by each airline before they allow its use. EmPower provided that validation that the consumer device wouldn't consume too much power etc. Remember that use of laptops could bring down an airraft, cause it to miss the runway, interfere with navigation and all those fears. (simply because the airline had not made tests so it had to provide excuses to not allow them). Same for phones later on. Ironinally: Swissair 111 was downed by fancy electronics that had been approved for flight and installed into the airplane. (so even that approval process failed in this case as the system drew more power than the wiring could handle, and hot wiring, combined with kapton insultaion caused faire that downed the aircraft.

Sorry you fell for this. I know full well what's meant. It's just about nospam back-pedaling from "seat power" being 110VAC/12DC [1] and now suddenly including a USB socket as "seat power". Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but it makes the (non-)'discussion' about seat power being uncommon in below-business class a moot one. [1] Or there abouts.

This is true that nospam can't admit he's wrong, so he moves not only the goalposts, but the bleachers and the lime marks on the playing field until you're so confused that you just give up. While this is a fact, what I wonder is what kind of person does that? What's the psychological issue he has called? How do you deal with this unhelpful trait (other than to just ignore it)?

The US is or was different. There was a large number of very old aircraft such as DC9s, MD80s and early 737s which airlines which remainied in operation for much longer than they should have and airlines didn't upgrade interiors because they knew those planes were on their way out. It took longer than expected to replace them due to all the big airlines wasting a couple years in bankrupctcy protection, and then going through mergers. Note that Southwest does not offer in seat power, even on planes equipped with Wi-Fi internet.

Other aircraft have power in select rows of the Main Cabin - just look for the lightning bolt symbol on the overhead bins. You’ll also find USB ports on select aircraft and all new planes include USB ports and power outlets at every seat. Type of power you can expect Most of our planes feature AC power outlets and those that offer DC power are in the process of being converted. In the meantime, you can use a DC-to-AC adaptor on select flights if you’re in First or Business Class. Simply ask your flight attendant for an adaptor. ## Looks like they still have some EmPower junk in older planes.

Uses a variant of the original JT8D engine, with more power and less noise. And has longer fuselage as a result of the more powerful engines. (The same type rating was maintained for the MD90 and the MD95 which was renamed Boeing 717 after Boeing bought McDonell Douglas, and kept production to fulfil the order book then shut it down). McD did similar thing with DC-10, creating the MD-11, but did not keep same type rating because of the change from 3 to 2 crew cockpit. (keeping type rating requires cockpit be functionally maintained (glass displays can replace analogue ones, but must show same stuff for instance). MD80s basically have very early generation jet engines that burn 20% more fuel than current jets. (and even more than new generation such as C Series with geared turbofan). I am guessing drop in oil price gace AA more time to retire these fuel guzzlers. Also, as I recall, during its Chapter 11 and subquent purchase by America West/US Airways, it delayed deliveries for its 737s meant to replace the MD80s. I woudl not expect updated interiors on those aircraft as they are most liekly next in line to disappear.

At regulatory level, not different, just a variant of the DC-9. This means it inherits grandfatered regulations from the 1960s instead of more stringent 1980s ones. As an example, the A321, being born in late 1980s has had to have 2 overwing exits (or a full door) to meet the then current standards, while the 737-800/900 didn't because they could keep the 1960s regulations that required fewer exits per passenger. (Until Europe stepped in and forced Boeing to implement the new exit regulations ifr it wanted to be approved in europe). The MD80 was also a DC-9 from a pilot certification point of view. If you were trained on DC-9, you can switch to MD80 with minor "variant" traning, whereeas switching from 737 to MD80 requires full type training.

I remember when I was flying a lot for business and they let us fly business class for international flights, and I had to have an EmPower adapter. Now there's 120V outlets even in economy on most planes, except for the budget airlines like Spirit (if they could figure out how to charge for it, no pun intended, they might add it!). Even Wow Air has some sort of power outlet but they don't describe it very well, calling it "universal." --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
