That's the nominal voltage but an alternator regulator isn't that precise in that the voltage at the dashboard can range to as high as 17 or 18 VDC in many vehicles (my dash will show the voltage if I hit a few buttons). But neither is 117 or 120 ACV RMS accurate, or 220, etc., so, 13.8VDC is good enough for a nominal designation.

When I fly personal, I use the cheapest class there is, but after 9/11, they started checking the cargo bay. (jk) When I fly in economy class, I sit at the back of the plane (planes always crash forward and they often but not always let the rear of the plane board first and get all the good luggage space although they don't let much luggage on anymore anyway). I almost never, even to this day, see a 117VAC connector, but half the time I have the 5VDC USB connector. It's hit or miss but some airlines (lufthanza) are better than others (alitalia) for USB. Does anyone know the current output of the airplane USB? Probably nominally 500ma (but those amps have to come from long wires so they may cheap out on the current limiting).

In this century, with a need to consider the necessity of charging laptops and other goodies, I have flown business & economy with BA, United, Northwestern, Delta, Canadian, Alaska, and KLM (my favorite airline for the last 20 years), and with the exception of commuter flights in and out of San Luis Obispo, and Sacramento CA, I have never been lacking of some means of keeping my various "stuff" charged. > Does anyone know the current output of the airplane USB? In my experience, a somewhat modern(ized) airplane is more likely to have a USB socket than a seat power outlet (whether 110/230VAC or 12VDC) in economy class. Seat power outlets are normally only available in (real) business (or higher) class. See also Savageduck's response, which says basically the same.

Your experience must be the odd one out or/and US-centric. As I said - and both Savageduck and Yanis Bernard confirmed, seat/row power outlets are *very* uncommon - to put it mildly - in classes below business class.

On my current trip I have flown United, Delta, and KLM out bound, and in 10 days I start out on my return home to California from Cape Town. That will be KLM for the CPT-AMS leg, KLM for the AMS-SFO leg, and United for the short hop from SFO-SLO. I might not fly as much as you, but I have more than enough recent time in the air and at airports to comment on my experience. -- Regards, Savageduck

Just to clarify, my KLM flight from Cape Town to AMS will be in a 777-200ER
(V1) and on that flight none of the economy seats have power outlets other
than USB, they are to be found in business class.

For the flight from AMS to SFO on a KLM 787-9, all the seats are provided
with standard power.

usb counts as seat power.

<boggle!>
Back-pedal much?
May I remind you that *you* *started* with:
> so will an airline adapter that plugs into the seat power outlet.
I.e. NOT USB, because that's not related to "an airline adapter" in
any shape or form.
Hence my (first) response was in *that* context:
> In my experience, a somewhat modern(ized) airplane is more likely to
> have a USB socket than a seat power outlet (whether 110/230VAC or 12VDC)
> in economy class. Seat power outlets are normally only available in
> (real) business (or higher) class.
And your response was also in that context:
> seat power is available in all cabins on most airlines and has been for
> years. the only difference is f/j will have one outlet per seat while
> in y, it's shared per aisle/row, which is normally not a problem but
> every once in a while can be.
"one outlet ... shared per aisle/row" is clearly NOT referring to USB
power.
So after all this, now you suddenly cahnged your tune to "usb counts
as seat power"!?
If that's your new stance, then yes, USB seat power is quite common in
economy class! Duh!

Now explain, and don't side-step *again*: Why is an "adapter that plugs into the seat power outlet" needed to "charge off of usb"? What makes such an adapter an "airline adapter", instead of just an adapter, period? Enquiring minds want to know!
