Yup!
However, most of the time I have digital data off for most apps while on
this trip and I leave my data intensive usage for when I can access via
WiFi as I have with this use of NewsTap. That said, just a single use of
the Uber app and some email pretty much put me over the 100 MB threshold on
day one. I am now at 138 MB with an additional $25 for the overage.
...but for this trip I can afford it.

My experience, at least at the cheaper European hotels I stay at, is that, price for price, they're years behind the USA on the amenities. They nickel and dime you to death in the European hotels I've stayed at. Sure, in the USA, you can get charged for parking, and for Internet, but, in general, the Internet is free in the USA, whereas where I've stayed in Europe, I had to change the MAC address on the laptop just to get the Skype phone and laptop to work off the same Ethernet connection (I eventually resorted to bringing a small router, which solved that problem instantly). Luckily, nowadays, a "simple global" plan on T-Mobile will get you free unlimited Internet and texts on your cellphone, which includes the ability to tether and hotspot. So, you don't need hotel WiFi anymore. The T-Mobile plan is something like 70 bucks for two phones per month, which is just ok in the US but when you travel, it's well worth it because in the uS you get something like 2.5GB of data only before it slows down (you never get charged for being over data though but in Europe, you get unlimited (mostly 2G) data. So, when I travel to Europe, my phone becomes my Internet where the phone has more data (unlimited) in Europe than it does in the usa.

Ken Blake said: >>My experience, at least at the cheaper European hotels I stay at, is that, >>price for price, they're years behind the USA on the amenities. > > > > Your experience is different from mine. My hotels are in the price range of around $250USD per night, in the cities when I'm on personal travel. On business, the price is generally higher (usually around double that for the major cities). In the USA, for that same price, you almost always (if not always) get free Internet via both WiFi and Ethernet with the WiFi throughout the hotel (in the congregation areas anyway) and the parking generally free (except in the high-rise central city hotels). The breakfast is generally a "real" breakfast too, and it's almost always complementary. In Europe, for the same price, the breakfast is atrocious (I think they call it "continental" but there's nothing continental about it as it's really just a 7-11 stand in effect) and the WiFi generally doesn't exist or is terrible at best and the rooms have expensive Ethernet where you pay something like $15 per day for what should be free. But, as I said, that's just my experience. If yours is better, I'm happy for you but I concluded, long ago, Europe is decades behind the USA in customer service (just try to return a badly fitting slightly worn pair of shoes, for example, to a German or Italian store and watch the fireworks fly). In the USA, everything (almost) is returnable, no questions asked. Costco, for example, allows you to return stuff for life, except electronics (which used to be for life but now is limited to 90 days). In Europe, they don't have a clue what customer service means.

An apartment is like a suite in a hotel, and less than the cost of a small room in most hotels. For example, this part November I stayed in a very nice centrally-located apartment in Rome for about $110 a night (large living room, kitchen, large bedroom, large bathroom). And it had free wi-fi which worked very well; again availability of free wi-fi is one of the considerations I use in choosing an apartment. Apartments don't come with breakfast, but that's OK with me; my wife and I generally don't like hotel breakfasts, and we typically go to a neighborhood bar for coffee and a pastry (which is all we want for breakfast). > and the WiFi generally doesn't exist or >is terrible at best and the rooms have expensive Ethernet where you pay >something like $15 per day for what should be free. Again, I *always* get free wi-fi in European hotels at my $100 or so price, and I can't remember it ever being anywhere near terrible. Also in Europe, availability of free wi-fi is one of the considerations I use in choosing a hotel. If one doesn't have free wi-fi, I choose a different one.

That (free Wi-Fi in hotels) has also been my experience for the price range you mention. In Europe, in the US and in Australia. However it also has been my experience that in the *higher* price range hotels - even if you get a 'bargain' - there's no free Wi-Fi and you pay extra and at high prices for everything (Wi-Fi, parking, etc.) and things like breakfast and bar have very high prices. So the 'middle' segment of the market suits us just fine.

Whether at home or traveling, we use a credit card that gives us airline mileage for almost all our purchases, and we almost always travel to Europe on mileage. And we pay no interest on the credit card, since we pay the bill in full every month. >> For the $100-$150 that I usually spend, I always get free wi-fi, and >> almost always in my room. I also choose hotels (and apartments) for location. Being centrally located is the most important criterion for me. To me, being centrally-located is far more important than luxury. But as I said, "availability of free wi-fi is **one** of the considerations I use in choosing a hotel." From the pool of inexpensive centrally-located hotels or apartments I choose one with free wi-fi. Another important consideration is that it have an elevator. Especially for apartments, you'll find many choices where you'll have to walk up four or five flights of stairs; I'm never interested in doing that. >Have you ever tried returning a store-bought item in Europe? >How did that go? No. My wife and I almost never do any shopping when we travel.

The last time I stayed in one at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, the WIFI was not free. In their cheaper hotels, it's free and so is it in other chains. But at the expensive Hilton, you pay extra for it. > > In Europe, for the same price, the breakfast is atrocious (I think they > call it "continental" but there's nothing continental about it as it's > really just a 7-11 stand in effect) and the WiFi generally doesn't exist or > is terrible at best and the rooms have expensive Ethernet where you pay > something like $15 per day for what should be free. > > But, as I said, that's just my experience. > > If yours is better, I'm happy for you but I concluded, long ago, Europe is > decades behind the USA in customer service (just try to return a badly > fitting slightly worn pair of shoes, for example, to a German or Italian > store and watch the fireworks fly). > > In the USA, everything (almost) is returnable, no questions asked. > Costco, for example, allows you to return stuff for life, except > electronics (which used to be for life but now is limited to 90 days). > > In Europe, they don't have a clue what customer service means. I was speaking to the owner of a hotel I was staying at on the island in Greece where my father came from. He told me that Americans seemed to be the hardest to please but also that we were much more willing to pay for good service than others. From my limited experience, I've not received the same level of customer service in other countries as we get here in the USA although the UK was really good in that respect. I've also noted that in many areas where recent immigrants have opened up businesses here in the USA, their level of customer service is not up to the standards we have been accustomed to. It ma be normal where they came from, but it isn't here and unless they inted to cater to their fellow countrymen only, they have to adapt.

That's my experience, as well: it's free. But it's not always usable :-{ .
In the last cheaper Hilton I stayed at, the wi-fi was useless in the rooms
I tried (two different ones!) -- usable only in the breakfast lounge.
Front desk cut me a 25% discount on the room rate in exchange for my screen
scrapes showing utter absence of their wi-fi SSID at many times of day, and
unusably low signal level on other occasions, scrapes they were going to
hit their ISP over the head with in demanding a better service level.
Wired ethernet? Yes, I could have used it -- my laptop has an RJ-45
ethernet port, and the room sported an 8-conductor RJ-45 ethernet cable --
but it was all inactive, no signal on it.

generally, the wifi signal is fine but there's insufficient bandwidth
for the property.
for the times that the signal is weak, a travel router comes in *very*
handy to rebroadcast it to your room (or wherever you need it).

there was likely a signal. you just didn't configure your laptop
appropriately to get an ip address.

Customer service in the large chain stores in the USA is the best in the world, in my humble experience. In most of the world, IMHO, customer service stops the moment they put the cash into the cash register.

In most retail shops I've been in in other countries, the customer service has been very good. Turkey was an exception to that - many retailers out-and-out tried to rip me off. At many restaurants, it's not what we are accustomed to in the USA, I gather it's just a difference in cultures. Perhaps having the tip included in the cost also plays a part in that. When I was a small place in Florence, Italy, I asked for a glass of ice to have with my soda. I was given a glass with one cube. I asked for more and was told "no". I left. When in Venice, we stayed at a nice hotel. The air-conditioning was not working in our room and it was July, there was a heatwave going through southern Europe at the time (lots of brush fires all around in other places). We went to the front desk and asked for another room. We were told there were none available and wouldn't be for a week. My wife went back to the room, took her pillow and brought it back to the nice cool lobby and told the front desk manager that she would just sleep there since it was too hot in our room. They got us another room. Other people in our tour group had the same problem and were all refused new rooms like us but they eventually got them when the tour manager stepped in. There were plenty of rooms, they just lied.

Same here, and not just in hotels, but also in other establishments which claim to have free/paid Wi-Fi, and not just in Europe, but for example also in (a Hilton in) Australia. I really can't be bothered with all the re-configuration, making/using accounts, non-working/overloaded/too-weak-signal/intermittent networks, etc., etc., not to mention paying through the nose for such crap. So when travelling, just like you, my phone becomes my Internet. Yes, sometimes it may cost more, but my health and wits is worth way more! :-(

The last "nice" hotel we stayed in the wifi was $15/day for "up to two devices". For 5 devices it was $25/day. We had 8 devices for four people, which would have required two $25/day plans, but they didn't have any way to do that with a single room---not that we'd have paid it anyway. -- "His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork." - Mae West

I have a terrible memory for numbers and looking back, I couldn't believe it was $15 so I said 5. >devices for four people, which would have required two $25/day plans, >but they didn't have any way to do that with a single room---not that >we'd have paid it anyway. It's been about 40 years since this happened, but let me tell you about the Hilton hotel in Chicago. A guy went to check out and they had charged him for 2 phone calls. He knew he hadn't made any calls (because iirc he never made calls from hotel phones. They are or used to be expensive.) Somehow, with a lawsuit and subpoenas, I guess, he found out that they were charging just about everyone for phone calls they didn't make. There were about 1000 rooms in the hotel so at 50 cents for two calls, that's 500 dollars a night or $180,000 a year. I think I have the numbers too low. Maybe it was 50 cents a call. The total was more like 500K or a mil. And this had gone on for years. Did I mention he was a lawyer. So there was a class action, he collected the standard fee on the recovery, the class was notified and most people didnt' bother to get their 50cents so the rest goes to some charity that the judge picks with the help of the plaintiff or both litigants. If they'd added calls to rooms where calls were made, they might have gotten away with it, but they charged people, like my mother and me, who would always find a pay phone rather than pay what a hotel charged.
