You now say "it goes without saying," but in the message I replied to you said "If you're going to use data at all the only way to go is to buy a local prepaid SIM card and choose a data package." Note the phrases "at all" and "the only way to go" in that sentence. As far as I'm concerned, those phrases made it clear that what you meant is just the opposite of what you now say goes without saying. >What we're talking about is having access to the internet when you're >out and about and not within range of any wi-fi signal. Again, that's *not* what you said in the message you replied to. And as far as I'm concerned, when I'm out and about, I hardly ever use data on my phone. I use it when I'm at home, and if I'm traveling, I use it in the hotel or apartment I'm staying in. One of my considerations for choosing a hotel or apartment is that it have free wi-fi.

None of my apps are allowed to update using cellular data.

I choose to not use a data package at all and pay for the data
I use and do use it quite a bit and my monthly mobile bill
is normally below $20 and I use it extensively on the garage/yard
sale run ever weekend.

Others who know more than I do about AT&T have helped you so I will only say I travel all the time to Europe using my AT&T cellphone which is currently using T-Mobile SIM cards. For T-Mobile, if you have the "simple global" name on your US plan, then when you travel abroad, at least in Europe, the data plan goes to unlimited data (the speed depends on the location but it's certainly very usable most of the time but not always - just like in the USA). So, what's odd in their pricing structure is that I'm limited to 2.5GB of data per phone while I'm in the USA, but I get unlimited data when I'm in Europe. The phone calls are complex in that there are at least a dozen different scenarios that most people forget to ask their carrier about, but essentially the cellular charges are 20 cents a minute for the phone in Europe, but if you're on WiFi and making WiFi calls, then most WiFi calls are free (except those in the current country to the current country). Maybe I'll write up a separate thread or maybe we can cover here the dozen different scenarios which it's not at all intuitive how the carrier charges you?

Yanis Bernard said: > Maybe I'll write up a separate thread or maybe we can cover here the dozen > different scenarios which it's not at all intuitive how the carrier charges > you? I go to Europe at least once a month (on average) where I have to use the phone a lot while in Europe and where I've had different US carriers over time. In the olden days I had Verizon, so I bought a burner phone in the US and a SIM card in Europe (like everyone else did). For the hotel, I had Skype phones, where I had to learn how to change MAC addresses on computers to use them and the computer on the same hotel Ethernet connection. Then, in the not-so-olden days, I could just rent a loaner phone at the airport and purchase time on a SIM card. More recently, buying SIM cards were easy, but some countries require you to be an EU citizen. Giving up on all that complexity, I now just use my US phone on my US carrier plan in Europe, where, nowadays anyway, the horrendous "roaming" charges seem to have disappeared (at least on my carrier they did). You'd think that simplifies things, but even so, it's amazing when you ask the question below of your carrier before you go on a trip abroad how they just make up the answers on how various types of phone calls will be charged. You call back, ask the same question, and get different answers! So when you ask for written proof, you find most of the answers documented, but some not documented anywhere by the carrier! So, my advice is to ask your carrier, before you go abroad, what the charges are for the following types of calls (please correct or flesh out what I've missed or stated incorrectly so that others can use this list when they're calling their carrier). There are quite a few differences in how things work when you're in the USA versus when you're in Europe, such as tethering (USB cable) and hotspot (setting up the phone as a wireless AP), and charges for data, so I will keep this post only to "phone calls", whether made on the local cellular network or on WiFi calling. Assuming "roaming" charges aren't an additional issue, nor are calls to other countries an issue, here is a preliminary list of ten questions that I suggest any US traveler ask before going abroad. What are the charges for... 1. Cellular calls from your phone in Europe to the USA. 2. Cellular calls from the USA to your phone in Europe. 3. Cellular calls from your phone in Europe to the same country. 4. Cellular calls from the same country to your phone in Europe. ----- 5. WiFi calls from your phone in Europe to the USA. 6. WiFi calls from the USA to your phone in Europe. 7. WiFi calls from your phone in Europe to the same country. 8. WiFi calls from the same country to your phone in Europe. ----- 9. Cellular calls to retrieve voicemail while in Europe. 10. WiFi calls to retrieve voicemail while in Europe. ----- To give you an idea of the arbitrary nature of these charges, here's what my carrier last told me for those very same questions: 1. Cellular calls from your phone in Europe to the USA = 20c/min 2. Cellular calls from the USA to your phone in Europe = 20c/min 3. Cellular calls from your phone in Europe to the same country = 20c/min 4. Cellular calls from the same country to your phone in Europe = 20c/min ----- 5. WiFi calls from your phone in Europe to the USA = free 6. WiFi calls from the USA to your phone in Europe = free 7. WiFi calls from your phone in Europe to the same country = free 8. WiFi calls from the same country to your phone in Europe = 20c/min ----- 9. Cellular calls to retrieve voicemail while in Europe = same as to USA 10. WiFi calls to retrieve voicemail while in Europe = 20c/min ----- What other questions need to be asked of phone calls only?

But it is very bad if you expect people to call you from France as you impose long distance changes to them even though they may be a block away. More importantly, mobile carriers have shifted their revenue generation from voice to data. It is the data charges you need to worry about. And last I heard, T-Mobile's roaming deal does not give you access to LTE speeds while roaming.

That's a good point. Now you made me remember that I had asked what the caller pays, and T-Mobile said the caller pays whatever the caller would be paying because that is out of their control. > Roamingf is good when you are on business and expect people in USA to be > able to seamlessly reach you without knowing you are in France. This is true in that the roaming is seamless. T-Mobile told me we have to reboot the phone when we land in the airport, and from that, it will pick up the roaming automatically. > But it is very bad if you expect people to call you from France as you > impose long distance changes to them even though they may be a block away. This is a good point that the caller, if they are in France, pays an International rate. The good news is that, with T-Mobile, you don't have to worry about different per-minute charges to in-network or out of network or landlines versus cellphones, like you used to have to worry about in the olden days. > More importantly, mobile carriers have shifted their revenue generation > from voice to data. It is the data charges you need to worry about. This may very well be true, since I don't think they rape you on roaming anymore (it used to be horrendous). I don't think they rape you on cellphones versus landlines either anymore (it used to cost ten times as much to call cellphones than to call landlines). The T-Mobile data in Europe is unlimited if you have the words "simple global" on your plan. So it's ironic that you have more data in europe than when in the USA. > And last I heard, T-Mobile's roaming deal does not give you access to > LTE speeds while roaming. T-Mobile definitely says it's 2G but I think it's whatever it is, and they don't want to guarantee anything more than 2G. I'm not sure though, but the speeds are adequate considering that the data is unlimited while in Europe.

Rebooting is absolutely not necessary, certaintly not for an iPhone. Phone will search for available networks, will not see your home network. It then looks up a table of "good" networks to roam on (and they are given priorities) and if one is present will try to log into obne, and if none is present, will try network with strongest signal, try to login, and if your home network accepts, you're all set. Otherwise, phone goes to next best network, and tries to login etc. > This may very well be true, since I don't think they rape you on roaming > anymore (it used to be horrendous). They still rape you for roaming. But the raping *appears* to be less. > T-Mobile definitely says it's 2G but I think it's whatever it is, and they > don't want to guarantee anything more than 2G. Wholesale roaming deals involve paying by the byte. (aka: one bill for all usage generated by yoru customers). The rate limiting is done by T-Mobile USA's routers, and this basically ensures you can't consume much data. For instance, with 2G, Twitter will likmely time out if you try to post a picture because it takes too long to upload. You can't view videos etc etc. So at the end of the day, you end up consuming much less data which means T-Mobile doesn't have to pay much to the visited network.

I remember thousand dollar bills when I traveled in the olden days, but now the charges are only the twenty cents per minute, which isn't too bad, especially with cellular being free so Facetime works just fine. > The rate limiting is done by T-Mobile USA's routers, and this basically > ensures you can't consume much data. I understand what you're saying, and it certainly makes sense, but does T-Mobile really limit the data from the USA when you are in Europe on a 2G network? That seems like a long arm to control your local use of data. I'm not doubting what you say, but it's news to me (I had never thought how they limit data). In Europe, the so-called 2G data seems fine in most locations and it certainly handles Youtube and Facetime without a problem.

That seems like a long arm to control your local use of data. With GSM all of your data flows back to your home network's APN (glorified router) before going to the internet. That APN has access to your subscription options and can throttle your speeds based on your subscription. (such as when you exceed that 25 gig limit in USA and throttled won to slow speeds). While it is possible that they would only allow 2G protocol negotiation on roaming partners, I somehow doubt roaming partners would really want to have customers still on 2G which is spectrally far more inefficient and likely has much less spectrum than 3G or LTE. In Canada, Wind and Mobilicity, when they were independent, had roaming deal with the big guys which did limit protocol negotiation to 3G, did not allow lTE. This was to limit usage by retail customers and thus control the exhorbitant roamingc osts charged by our incumbents (something which the CRTC is in the process of fixing). > I'm not doubting what you say, but it's news to me (I had never thought how > they limit data). This is what I had when I biked to USA on T-Mobile a few years back and trust me, you can't tweet images. (this was when iPhone lacked 3G on 1700 which is what T-Mobile had at the time). And I strongly suspect in europe you are far mroe likely to be on 3G (HSPA HSPA+) than 2G, unless your phone lacks multiband and can't support any of their 3G frequencies.

I don't doubt you but it's news to me so that's why it's a leap of thought. Certainly, if everything flows back to the APN from the phone, they can control everything! > That APN has access to > your subscription options and can throttle your speeds based on your > subscription. This also makes sense that they could limit you to 2G but to what effort and for what benefit. I think, as you seem to be saying, that they just warn you that you may not get much better than 2G speeds when traveling, simply because of all the variables involved. > 2G is closer to dialup. Well, it was pretty good so it must be better than 2G. I have a kid in Europe at this very moment, so I will ask what the little icons say. > And I strongly suspect in europe you are far mroe likely to be on 3G > (HSPA HSPA+) than 2G, unless your phone lacks multiband and can't > support any of their 3G frequencies. It's a modern iPhone so it has everything, as all iPhones do.

A decent lithium power cell will take care of the problem of no USB ports on the plane. I bought my wife a 10,000mah Quick-Charge battery and she can get at least four full charges from it. > >> Phone will search for available networks, will not see your home >> network. Does Amazon have it? At what price?

Does Amazon have it? At what price? the first thing to find out is what type of seat power the airline you fly has. if you fly a lot, you'll need to cover all options. airlines have typically used 15vdc, either with a cigarette lighter plug (the same as in a car) or an empower plug: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EmPower_(aircraft_power_adapter)> if the airline you fly has either of the above, then anything from a known manufacturer that's fully usb compliant, versus noname chinese crap, should work fine. normally, they come with a pass-thru adapter so you can use either type of plug. more recently, airlines are installing 110vac with outlets that are compatible with just about any ac plug. if your airline has this type of seat power, then use a standard ac-usb adapter, which you already have (likely several of them). <http://airchive.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/IMG_7846.jpg> note that a car provides 13.8v (when in operation), so some airline adapters are designed to work both in a plane and in a car, while others might only work in one and not the other. if this matters to you, be sure to get one that works in both.
