If you're from the US and traveling abroad and need to call, toll free, your carrier's customer support (611 equivalent) telephone number, these numbers (which I looked up just now for another thread) should be useful to you. AT&T is +1-916-843-4685 https://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/faq.jsp AT&T also has +1.314.925.6925 https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1009432 T-Mobile is +1-505-998-3793 https://support.t-mobile.com/community/contact-us/ Verizon is more complex, with a different toll-free number per country: https://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/6715-4545-global-support-toll-free-numbers.pdf Verizon also has a complex procedure involving 0-908-559-4899 https://scache.vzw.com/dam/businessportal/content/international/Global_Phone/global_support_guide.pdf No need to comment or discuss other than to correct or improve the data for everyone.

These are numbers where the carrier will not bill you if the call is made from a cell phone with an AT&T/carrier SIM card in it. If your phone is down and you use landline or someone else's phone to call these numbers, they will be billed for a regular call to the USA. When done from your cell phone, the call is processed like any other long distance call. It is during the billing when the software goes through all the call records that it skips over calls to that number.

Thank you for clarifying that these aren't carrier-independent toll-free numbers, but that they are carrier-dependent "subsidized" (or whatever we call it) free numbers. Thank you for clarifying. > If your phone is down and you use landline or someone else's phone to > call these numbers, they will be billed for a regular call to the USA. This is a good point. I think the T-Mobile one, as I recall, said you can make a "collect" call, so, that might not be billed. Perhaps the rest are similar in that regard? > When done from your cell phone, the call is processed like any other > long distance call. Thank you for clarifying how the billing subtraction occurs for these specific numbers. I wonder if 611 uses the same method when we're in the USA?

On 2017-01-01 12:49, Yanis Bernard wrote: > I wonder if 611 uses the same method when we're in the USA? Yep, those numbers are whitelisted to be zero rated for phone use. However, it is not clear to me when you do 611 while roaming how this happens. Normally, outgoing calls are handled by the visited carrier who then bills the home carrier. So if you do 611 while roaming, the visited carrier would bill your home carrier for the call in minutes and long distance charges back to your home country. (those are wholesale rates and have absolutely nothing to do with exhorbitant rates charged to retail customers). Those "full" numbers would be handled by the visited carrier in say France just as a long distance to your mother in Law in the USA. It is only when the visted French carrier sends tha billing info to the USA ghome carrier that the home carrier processes the data and excludes calls to special numbers. But it still pays the visited carrier for those minutes/long distance. (albeit, as mentioned becofore at very very low rates). Billing records for mobile phones are more complex than landline because they also include the tower identification(s) that served you at time of call. Think about a new york based person getting off plane at LAX and calling a local taxi. The carrier will bill you a local call, even though your made a call from a 212 number to a 310 number. Data is different as all data use is funneled back to your home carrier's router (APN) so the home carrier has the billing info right away. (the visited carrier bilk bills for all usage from all customers). Those routers generate netflox records for each IP connection (time started, time ended, number of bytes exchanged, source and destination IPs and other info as well). The routers also generate "total" billing records for the IP assigned to you and this thsi the primary data usage record. Outfits like T-Mobile then deduct from that total netflow usage associated with white listed services.

Are these numbers even approriate (i.e. should they be used) when calling a provider from a phone with their own SIM in it? (N.B. I use 'provider', because the provider might not be the carrier.) With my - Dutch and Australian - providers, I just call a short number - like 1200 - which will connect me to my provider's helpdesk. Those calls are free also when roaming (worldwide). [...]

I suspect there may be roaming cases where the short number doesn't
work. It all depends on how everything is coded into the GSM stack and
SIM cards.
Also, by publishing "real" numbers, it allows one to call from any phone
while roaming (consiser case where you lost phone and need to disable
the SIM card). Of course, it is no longer "toll free", which is why I
don't like the use of term "toll free". ("you don't be charged for call
if made from your own cellphone" might be more appropiate.

I agree with what JF Mezei said which is that the "short number" will only
work from the home country (eg 611 for a US customer may only work while in
the usa but not while in europe).
The long number will work from anywhere.
As for the charges, it is my understanding that the calls to the long
number from the cellphone won't end up being charged on the home-country
bill (in this case, the home country is assumed to be the USA).
I think you have to ask for it to be a collect call if you're going to call
those long numbers from any other phone than a cellphone on the carrier
that you are calling.

And (depending on the language involved) good luck doping out how to ask for the call to be collect (with charges reversed, billed to the recipient) -- it almost never involves the literal translation of the verb "collect" -- and the French "en PCV" involves neither "positive crankcase ventilation" nor "packed cell volume" nor "PolyVinyl Chloride" :-) . Por cobrar, iirc. But what's also strange is that I don't remember ever making a collect call on that trip. I don't remember making more than 4 phone calls total. all local. Normally I had no one to call. And it's an idiom, not a phrase I would have used for some other reason. >-- it almost never involves the literal translation of the verb "collect" >-- and the French "en PCV" involves neither "positive crankcase >ventilation" nor "packed cell volume" nor "PolyVinyl Chloride" :-) . > >Cheers, and Happy New Year, -- tlvp

In addition to those numbers, there's another set of real toll-free numbers which are free to call from any phone line which will connect you to an operator in your home country. These vary for each network, and there's a different set of numbers for each country you're calling from. For example, to contact AT&T when you're in the U.K. you would dial 0800-89-001. This service has been around for many years, in fact since long before cellphones became widely available. The service is generically known as Home Country Direct. For AT&T, you can find a complete list of their access numbers here. https://www.att.com/media/att/2012/support/pdf/USADirectTravel-AccessCodes.pdf For other networks you'd have to research to find out what numbers to dial.

The voice and text allowances are reasonable, but 100MB of data is
nothing these days. I would eat that up in a matter of minutes. It
only takes one app on your phone to decide to do an update and that's
you're entire allowance gone.
If you're going to use data at all the only way to go is to buy a
local prepaid SIM card and choose a data package.
