But the amplifier is not designed for that different output impedance, so it is, at least, working out of specs. Probably distorting as well. Maybe not. It has to be calculated or tested for each case. -- Cheers, Carlos.

I've designed and constructed many pro audio devices over the last several decades. That said, the simplest arrangement would use paired resistors, but even that could be risky, depending on the output design of the amp. Another potential down side is that many modern recordings aren't capable of true mono due to phase issues in the mix. -- best regards, Neil

Trivial to do it with resistors.

I imagine they do it through an appropriate resistor network which allows for the output impedance of the driving stage, and the input impedance of the driven stage, has an amplifier after the network and, an output approximately equal to the level of the stereo signal. With only 6db attenuation they probably don't have to worry too much about noise. But they don't just connect the outputs together. -- Roger Hayter

So surely a mono 3.5 is two connector whereas the stereo has three. This would mean that you would short one channel out in one case if you plugged in a mono phones system. Maybe this is why they do not make one. Brian -- ----- - This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... The Sofa of Brian Gaff... briang1@blueyonder.co.uk Blind user, so no pictures please! I don’t give the chinese particularly supply almost everything.

A switch is more expensive and can fail. -- Cheers, Carlos.
