Well assuming this, then you would need two adaptors I'm afraid for the reasons in my last message. If you can be sure shorting out a channel does not matter there could be a way, but its very dodgy. You can buy plug in stereo to mono so mono earpieces hear both channels as mono, you can buy a device that has a mono plug and routes the output to both channels of a stereo set of phones. Short left to right inside the male, making sure it is marked clearly to avoid confusion, and simply insert it into the second female to switch stereo to mono. Others have issued warnings about equipment damage so I won't repeat them here. -- Terry --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

I have been trying that (using a spare 3.5mm mono to stereo adapter for the "switching plug" because its build to short out the two signal paths). However with the particular plugs and sockets I have tried the insertion and extraction is very far from smooth. It's a sort of biggish tug or a good old shove. One reason I wanted a switch was to make it easy to A/B compare the mono and stereo playbacks.

So instead of what you're using, use the Y connector and the stereo plug he refers to and instead of plugging and unplugging it, run a 2-conductor wire from the L hot and R hot to a switch. For inlilne switch recommendations, especially the second one, see my post closer to the start of this thread. >However with the particular plugs and sockets I have tried the >insertion and extraction is very far from smooth. And distortion. Proper summing of both channels can not be ensured to happen. -- Cheers, Carlos.

If you have to unplug it anyhow, why not get a stereo to mono adapter with no switch? This will be hard enough to find because most of them will be designed for a mono-plug. I seem to remember seeing one but maybe I'm thinking of a Y-connector that does this. iirc monoprice.com sells a wide range of adapters, they're very low priced and shipping for a small amount is very cheap. While you're on the site you may find other things you want, like a long amplified usb cable. Who knew? >Sometimes I have a stereo source which I want to hear in mono on >stereo headphones. But even here, it's not that much trouble to plug the adapter in between the two things, especially if it's a different stereo source from usual. I say this because I'm an adapter addict, and woould have had every adapter there was 40 years ago if I could have. But now there are thousands of kinnds and it's impossible, and I've never seen one with a switch, and if it had a switch, it would be 3 times the size of one without a switch! > >(At other times, I just want to hear a stereo source in stereo as >usual.)

Ignoring the fact that shorting amplifier outputs together isn't that good for them the closest to what you want to do with standard parts would be a headphone splitter that parallels up two 3.5mm stereo sockets and a mono 3.5mm plug to short left and right together. eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5mm-Stereo-Jack-Headphone-Splitter-Adaptor-1-Plug-to-2-Sockets-/351762927569 You might be able to find a mono 3.5mm adapter unswitched and carry both. But I can't see anyone making this item... no demand ;-) -- Regards, Martin Brown

Buy a short 3.5mm stereo extension lead (I bought a 12" long one last week), cut into it to extricate the wires for both channels, then add a small switch to short the two channels together. Cover switch and cables after testing, with some Milliput.

Cover switch and > cables after testing, with some Milliput. It may well be commonly done, but it is not a good idea to short the stereo channels together. Probably the amplifier is protected against electrical damage but as far as the difference signal is concerned the behaviour is probably not defined. Either use just one channel or connect the two stereo channels through two resistors high enough to maintain linearity but low enough not to use all the power. The value obviously depends what the load is and what load the amplifier is intended for. -- Roger Hayter

That's quite right but this is a quick and dirty fix for all those many amps which very inconsiderately do not provide a switchable stereo/mono output at the times I need one. :-) The world's gone stereo mad!

A feedback says that it worked with a mono out to a stereo headphone to hear with both ears. The pic of your adaptor don't make sense to me if the problem was being able to listen with only 1 side of a stereo earphone/headphone. The mono plug to stereo jack do work. Radio Shack had carried all kinds of adaptors & a big shame that they no longer have storefronts.

Your picture of a mono to stereo adapter would give the result I want but I would like its effect to be switchable so that at other times the adapter passes the stereo signal through uninterrupted. > The pic of your adaptor don't make sense to me if the problem > was being able to listen with only 1 side of a stereo > earphone/headphone. What I said above should make it clear why I used that picture. I have an adapter I have which splits the signal from a 3.5mm socket to two 3.5mm sockets each with its own volume control. (The volume controls don't work well and interact with each other but that isn't the point.) www.kenable.co.uk/product_thumb.php?img=images/00014038.jpg So I reckoned if you can get a product which contains a small circuit board and two rotary volume controls neatly packagaed in an adapter then someone somewhere must be manufacturing a barrel/cartridge adapter with a tiny switch to short the two signal leads. It seems not.

I had an adapter for 2.5 to 3.5 mm with a volume control BUT it was really an adapter cable as it was some years back & a simple adapter was unavilable. Perhaps another "solution" would be more bulky like a separate headphone switch box with various output configurations may be found.

(I only paid attention to the ones near me.) And they don't have their fantastic webpage anymore, but I was told a few months ago that they were working on one. And I'm sure they don't have all the same inventory, but they had some. I usually only buy little parts and they had quite a few drawers with multiple sections. .

That's true. The Bilderberg Group, the World Alliance for Progress, and the Ladies Decency Society decided about 20 years ago to abolish mono, so as to be able to say one thing in one of our ears and something else, something more sinister from a free person's point of view. It took them 4 years to organize and start implementation but they 've been at it for 16 years now. The Ladies Decency Society was originally about propriety, morality, the quality of public speech, etc. just as the name implies, but it was taken over by drug-using pot-smoking hippies and now its goals are entirely different.
