#35854 — Android starts in an app.

SubjectAndroid starts in an app.

I wonder if there is anyone here still?

Android 4.2 phone (Cubot GT95) purchased for non- technical wife. We
want it to fire up or display the first screen as the home screen, but
at the moment it always starts in the messaging app, so she has to
navigate to the home screen to make a phone call.

How does one set an Android device to start from the normal basic menu
screen?

I've asked elsewhere, including XDA Developers, but no-one seems to know
the answer to this basic question.

I had a similar query the other day which turned out to be due to a
theme having been been changed from the original (the owner knows not
how - he claims he didn't change it - Mr. Nobody again?) and which
started on a different screen. Yours may be nothing to do with that -
but it's worth looking to see if there is a default theme to which you
can revert.

The subject line, "Android starts in an app", is unsurprising to me,
provided starts means "wakes up". When I wake up my phone it shows the
screen I was last looking at which, 9 times out of 10, is some app or
other.

However it does not show the same one every time when it wakes up which
is what yours is doing, yes?

If by start you mean "wake up", I don't know how to do that. My phone
starts (in the sense of powering on) in the home screen, but it wakes up
showing the last used screen and I've never wanted to change that.

Sorry I can't help.

Make sure to exit the app(s) you were using before that were displayed
on the screen. Then when you unlock the phone, you won't be looking at
those same prior apps you used. Rather than close a bunch of apps one
by one, use the Recent button to show the apps and either swipe them off
the screen or use the "X" button at the bottom to close them all.
However, if you are on a different screen than the home screen, that's
the screen to which you get returned when unlocking the phone. Pressing
the Home button does NOT exit out of the currently loaded apps. Their
windows disappearing does not mean they have unloaded.

On powering up (versus just unlocking the device), the default should be
to bring you to the home screen. You don't mention whether you, er, she
is simply unlocking an already powered-on phone or starts it fresh by
powering it on from a powered-off state. The Power button doesn't
always (and usually does not) power off the phone but just lock it.

Is it always the same app showing on the screen when you power up the
phone (and not by simply unlocking it)? Could be Cubot or whomever was
the vendor of that phone (like for locked phones) customized the phone
to always show their app.

Bob mentioned the possiblity of a theme always starting the same app (on
power on). Not sure this is true. Themes don't run apps. They change
the UI. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku-e8Hkd4k8, timemark 1:50,
where the author shows changing themes.

There are services or applications that startup when you start the
Android OS. Just like Windows with its services and startup programs,
Android has those, too. They should not shove an app window in your
face when you power up your phone (which is not the same as unlocking
your phone). You never mentioned the app for anyone to check if it
configures itself as a startup program and also shove an app window in
your face. There are startup managers to let you disable some services
or programs from loading when you power on the phone, like
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.startupmanager or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun (lots of
these type of apps). That's just an example. I've not use any so
cannot recommend one over the other. The problem with the vast majority
of free apps is they are riddled with ads, so they are not really free.

I'll need more time to go through all the info in these replies, but
nothing I've tried yet has altered anything.
I've reset the phone to factory default.
The phone starts or wakes the same whether I wake it, reboot it or just
switch it off to the state where it takes some time to start again and
plays a jingle as it starts.
It always comes up in the messaging app.
Looking at the messaging app, I see nothing in "Manager" that sets it as
default.
The Launcher seems to have everything listed under
"SpecialDesktopSetting" and I don't see any way to change this to
non-special.

A YouTube review of this model of phone shows it starting up with a
normal default screen, not in messaging like this one.

Have you gone into the Messages app and deleted all messages, recent
list, and anything else there that might be stored or cached in the app?

How about going to Application Manager -> All Apps column, scroll to
Messages app, and clear its data and cache?

Yes, I've done all that, but there is no difference.

I've tried loading in a different messaging app, but there is nowhere to
set the default sms app under Wireless and Networks. This is Android
4.2.

I have an Android 4.4 phone that does have this setting. I have loaded
the startup manager you referred to, but even after a restart, the phone
still starts in the old version of Messaging.

I actually have a couple of Android 4.2 phablets, but both start
correctly. Neither has a default sms setting in Settings

I can't give the Android 4.4 phone to my wife because the screen
registration is bad, so the virtual keyboard is an adventurous
nightmare. I also need it to read the fault codes (of which there are
many) on the Jeep.

Every android device I've owned starts (from cold) in the launcher and
wakes up to wherever it left off (unless you unlock using the smart
corners to force it to e.g. camera or phone app)

Have you tried a different launcher to see if it's something cubot have
shoved into there that's forcing your wife to see the messaging app?

I've tried the Google Launcher, but it requires another Google app, and
after trying to install that, I'm getting lots of instances of "Google
Search has stopped working", and it won't install.

I then tried the Microsoft Launcher (!) from the Play Store. Slow to the
point that Android said it had stopped working during the installation,
but then it seemed to fully install, offering Bing search etc. After a
short delay the phone started once again -straight into the Messaging
app.

I think I'll have a rest from this for a bit.

You might also want to ask in a community more focused on the Cubot

Tried to register with their forum over a week ago, but no confirmatory
email, my email address and username are listed as "pending" and the
email has definitely not arrived in any spam or other box.

If I ever get time, I must investigate logging.

Never did get to register on the Cubot forum, but emailed Cubot and did
get an answer. Very polite and pleasant, but not suggesting anything
new.

Finally gave up and uninstalled the messaging app that came on the
phone, and installed a different one. Tried a few, including the
Microsoft Android app, which I didn't like. Ended up with a basic Google
one that seems OK and the phone now starts on the home screen.
