#35844 — To root or not to root, that is my question

Frommicky <NONONOmisc07@bigfoot.com>

SubjectTo root or not to root, that is my question
Message-ID<dfbd2c9bvl04r53lu12dksbb5g1hg26kdr@4ax.com>
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but maybe my question is a
little different.

To root or not to root.

Even though I do a lor of things to the PC that others don't know how or
would be afraid to do, and I never caused myself a problem (until last
August), early on, something I read made rooting a phone seem very
dangerous, that one could slip and screw up the phone.

Even the "Root Android without PC" app says bricking is possible.

The author of that app gives disadvantages and advantages. The
advantages include increasing battery pack, improvign performanc and
enhancing speed of the OS, enhancing the visual experience.
Now am I right that NONE of these things happen just because of
rooting? Something added has to be done to get each of them, Things
I almost surely won't do.

He also lists removing inbuilt system apps to boost internal storage.
Iirc I have 1 gig internal and 64 gigs on SD. The first root programs
were probably written when internal was much less, and getting rid of
internal programs to make space woudl be less important because of that,
right? But OTOH it would be more important because there are so many
more internal programs now, and they keep wanting to update themselves,
which I find annoying. (8 programs are pending now!) Most of them I
will never, ever use. So if I could figure out how to delete them,
would the updating also stop, or is that directed from some place
outside the app? If so, if I can find the list after the appss are
deleted, maybe I can find the list without having to delete them, and
just stop the updating.

The only real reason I wanted to root is that I was once stuck in an
airport all night and the airport wifi only worked for me for an hour.
I found someone else and to entertain ourselves, we used his laptop
together for another hour and then the wifi shut down for him too. So
we tried to sleep. I understand with a rooted computer I could go all
night if this happened again. I guess it's not likely to happen
again, but if I had the chance to be prepared and I didnt' take it, I'd
be annoyed at myself.

So should I root. Is it that dangerous?

Yeah, like the Nike slogan says, just do it.

Then you'll have plenty to post about here what with your phone not
working like it was designed to, apps going screwy, and bye-bye warranty
coverage.

Good advice in general. However, an Android without root is useless to

Is that the paid version? Because their ads have become pretty
aggressive. I've uninstalled it and replaced it with Total Commander.

You can set your free ES File Explorer homepage to a directory
listing. That will get rid of a lot of the ad clutter seen on the
default homepage. However, I use AdAway to ensure that I don't see any
ads.

Apparently it needs root access. My phone is still under warranty, so
I'm not going to root it. Maybe later.

Actually, I knew about some of these and even sort of want to do some of
the those "some". I might even want to do some of those I didn't know
about. But it must a be a strange quirk of my nature that the only one
that greaty interested me will never come up again, stuck in an airport
all night. Or even something similar.

However I've saved your list to remind myself what I might do, when the
need to do them might arise. For example, right now I'd like to delete
a dozen or more apps that came with the phone (or got installed later
without my asking) but because I have more space than I've used, I guess
they're not really interfering, iiuc????

Make sure those apps aren't taking up any CPU cycles in the
background.

If they're system apps you don't save any space by uninstalling them.
It's better to just freeze those. In fact, since you're not concerned
about space it might be best to just freeze all your unneeded apps.
Their icons won't display and you can restore them quickly if you
change your mind.

Okay. I've looked at the battery use chart and didn't see anything I
didn't actually use.

Yes.

But folks habitually run Windows all the time with administrator
privileges, dumb passwords and cancelled security updates.

So you might decide one more moment of idiocy won't hurt if your end
game is oblivion. Just stay away from dodgy apps and dodgy wireless
hotspots and you might be fine.

Personally, I don't think it's worth any gains you might achieve.

Since Windows 8/10 there's no need, and it's no longer the default, to
"run Windows all the time with administrator privileges".

I agree that rooting a phone isn't worth it. For some, it might be on
an iOS device, though.

It was not needed for NT based Windows, AFAIK,
it was only a wide spread custom.

Also, rooting the Android phone
may be potentially dangerous procedure by its own,
in contrary to logging in as Administrator/root
in Windows/Linux

Well, thank you all. You've more than convinced me not to. Earlier I did
dl a rooting app and a MAC changing app, so in case I'm ever again in an
airport all night and the only way to stay online is by changing the MAC
address, I'll have them.

It doesn't seem likely to happen twice. ;-)

I guess I wanted to be adventurous, but not doing this will save me
time.

Sorry: is that "Yes" a "Yes, you should root", or a "Yes, it is that

Yes.

Wut? it depends on why you want to root a phone. If you have no
compelling reason, then the answer is "no". If you have a reason, even
if that reason is "because I can", then read up on how to root your
particular device.
