#35769 — Sync PC Directory to Android?

SubjectSync PC Directory to Android?
Message-ID<xn0kdbwes2g2idc006@news.individual.net>
Can anybody recommend any apps to sync a directory on my PC to an Android
device using WiFi please?

There are many that work in the other direction but I work on the
documents on a PC then I want to sync them TO my Lenovo Tab 2 so I can
read them in meetings.

Many thanks.

I use Dropbox for that sort of thing. Google Drive would work too.

Do you mean locally or remotely ?

For remote sync would be probably good some remote control SW
like TeamViewer or MyPhoneExplorer

Locally, i.e. within LAN behind Wifi router,
I use routinely SyncMe wireless ( on personal wifi ),
requiring you to define as permit acces to a share folder
for data exchange. Not sure if applicable in corporate envioronment.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bv.wifisync&hl=en

You should be able also to use Bluetooth.

Many thanks Poutnik. I tried that but it only seems to work from the
Android to the PC, I want something to go in the other direction.

It work forward, backward or both ways, depending how you set it.
You can define several syncing profiles, and each of set to set
to the syncing mode of your choice.

Typically, I use it to refresh the GPS vector maps and navigation data
from PC to Android.

Right, thank you!

I now have it set up to sync from PC to Android which is excellent. I
can't get it to write to a specific directory on the SD card but I'm
getting used to that with Android.

It's doing what I want, thanks for helping me persevere.

Once they are on the phone you can then move them wherever you want using
file manager app.

It can do that, unless there the SD write access restriction in A4.4+.
The internal storage can be away to go,
or following the Android version specific advices.

As I am a lucky owner of A4.3, I have no such a problem.

You are welcome.

I also have a Lenovo Tab 2. My Google Drive app syncs and mirrors the
Google Drive folder on my PC. I can open the docs directly from the app.

Another convoluted way I once used was to save the docs as attachments
in a Gmail draft. Then open the draft attachments in my Gmail Android app.

Do you mean a proper continuous sync or just to copy files across from
the PC to the phone?

If its the latter then you can bluetooth from pc to phone (assuming PC
has bluetooth) or just connect phone to pc by hardwire and it will then
appear as a directory on your PC file browser and you can then copy into
that.

'sync' doesn't have a direction, it means to update files to the
latest version in *both* directions.

It depends.

In the narrower sense you are right.

In the wider sense,
being synced can mean several different things.

intelligent syncing SW can work in several modes, like this:

Copying new/newer files desktop to Android.
Copying new/newer files Android to desktop.
Both - this you mean by syncing in narrower sense.
Mirroring desktop to Android.
Mirroring Android to desktop.

Just to thank everybody for their responses :-)

SyncMe wireless first recommended by Poutnik worked fine once I got my
head round it, and it works over WiFi so no cables to plug in. However,
once I was in the meeting I needed to switch between the agenda, last
meeting minutes and various notes/submissions. This is just not possible
on an Android device and I found it very frustrating. I have a Toshiba
Windows tablet and a Lenovo laptop. I think I will use one of those at the
next meeting!

You can replace the "Android" with iOS or Windows mobile. It's just a limitation of the one-app-at-a-time mobile device limitation. You should be able to switch between apps relatively quickly using the recent apps button, but not have multiple apps. visible at the same time. I agree, though, it severely limits usability.

Microsoft listen to customers? What heresy are you speaking?

I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 for portability. It came with Windows 8, very soon updated to 8.1 and now 10.
The original Windows 8 was a royal PITA for the exact same reason you find with Android. Many applications, and most importantly system applications like control panel, were full screen only. They market it as a business device and laptop alternative, but in reality it was a device with a high-resolution monitor, controlled by a mouse/keyboard, but designed to behave like a glorified phone with a fat-fingered touch screen.

Someone needed to provide MS with a dictionary, with "arse" and "elbow" clearly highlighted.

The limiting aspect of Android is that you can only have a single
instance of any given app open at a time, so you can't switch quickly
between two documents in the same app.

Some apps (e.g the browser) explicitly support multiple simultaneous
open documents ... but even with those it's slower to switch from
another app and then to select the required document (if that's what's
required) than it might be to switch to one of several instances of the
app each with a single open document.

> ... but not have multiple apps. visible at the same time.

You can split the screen between two apps in some versions of Android,
and even have floating windows. This may require some cooperation from
the apps themselves so not all apps may be able to do it.

Indeed, very frustrating.

The irony is I have a Toshiba WT310 tablet running Windows 8.1, nice bit
of kit with i% CPU, 4 GB RAM and one of those MMC things for storage.

Took it to the next meeting and all the documents I needed sat in the task
bar so I could call them up as and when. I went to check an email and
found that the Mail app doesn't store mail locally, just down-loads it
when you read it!

Back to the laptop.....

Other mail clients are available -- you could run something like
Thunderbird, but whether it'd be usable on a touch-screen device with no
keyboard I don't know.

The reason the "Mail app" doesn't store mail locally is probably because
it is written to be used on a tablet with "one of those MMC things for
storage" ... i.e. very limited storage space (compared with a "proper
computer"). It may me possible to configure it to keep a local mail
cache, though.
