Are others on T-Mobile in the USA getting their data limits constantly
updated for free?

Or just people like me, who don't need it?

I have a $100 4-phone plan with T-Mobile which gives me unlimited stuff and
what I "think" is free data, currently at 3.5 GB/month.

I started, a few years ago with a "free" 1GB of data per month, but I never
used it (I use only something like 50 to 200 kilobytes, somehow, each
month).

Then T-Mobile gave all the lines 2.5 GB/month, and I still didn't use it.

Then, just this week, T-Mobile gave me 3.5GB per month, saying it's until
February, but I still don't want it nor do I need it.

I'm just curious.

Are others on T-Mobile in the USA getting their data limits constantly
updated for free?

Or just people like me, who don't need it?

The data is the big deal with phone plans these days. Since nearly all
have unlimited talk/text, data is the only thing they have left to play
with. For those that use a lot of cell data, it is very important and nice
to have all these new/upgraded data deals. For others that really don't
use much data, there are nearly no real deals that are much different
between carriers.

Guys like me that only sign up for the basic deals and don't really care
that the basic ones have more data, it makes picking a carrier so much
easier.

I'm like you are, in that I first signed up with T-Mobile for their
$60/month plan with unlimited talk/text and NO data.

That worked fine until I went to Europe a few times and the cost of the
calls was a few hundred bucks, so I switched off that grandfathered plan to
$100/month for the same 4 phones with 1GB of data (at that time).

Now it's $100/month (plus government stuff, of course) and 3.5GB of data,
but I had only signed up for 1GB of data (the rest T-Mobile keeps giving to
me for free).

I guess there is absolutely no risk to T-Mobile in giving me more and more
data since I'm unlikely to use it just because they give it to me.

It's like giving me an exercise machine or a TV.
I'm not likely to use them so giving them to me would be worthless.

In fact, I received *two* iPads for free, and I almost never use them
except to debug what is going wrong with what the kids want to do with
them.

SO that's why I asked if T-Mobile was doing that for all their customers,
or only the ones who aren't using data?

NOTE: Every tactical trick an intelligent person can find out about their
vendor is a way to use those tactical tricks in the future to get a better
deal. For example, I just called Comcast four times, and the first two
calls gave me a *lousy* deal, but the third call I used Zillow to make
believe I was a new customer and they gave me a far better deal on that
third call. Guess what the fourth call was all about!

Consumer Cellular, where you can request either ATT or TM use, has separate
rates for cellular data and phone minutes which can be changed up or down
during any billing period. Try them - NO contracts.

We no longer have a T-Mobile plan (we switched to Google's Project Fi,
which does use T-Mobile, among others), but TMo has some cheap prepaid
plans that come with unlimited calling and texts but not very much data;
one of those might be better for you. Or, as long as you have a
supported device, Project Fi might work well for you, as you can pay for
only 1GB of data per month but get rebates for what you don't use.

other way around. t-mobile has cheap prepaid plans that have not very
much calling (100 min) and unlimited text/data, all for $30/mo.

that doesn't work on very many phones.

That too: that's what we had for a couple of years, but with Project Fi
we've paid less than $30 per month so far.

I was thinking of the TMo $40/mo. plan with unlimited calling and
texting and 3GB of LTE data.

MetroPCS has a $35/mo. plan with 1GB LTE data. That uses TMo's network.

The Fi-compatible phones we have (Nexus 5X, discounted with the Project
Fi signup) are fine. The Nexus 6P is fancier, and almost certainly the
new generation of Google phones to be released within the next month or
so will support Project Fi. (In fact I think I recall reading that
people have bought Nexus 5X or 6P phones and got the Project Fi SIM
card, then returned the phones and installed the activated SIM cards in
other phones. They don't get the auto-switching between TMo, Sprint, and
Republic, but the low cost of the plan seems to satisfy them. Maybe that
would work for people who insist on making Apple richer.)

I can't believe how marketing filled the Project Fi web site is, so, I'm
opening a *separate* thread on what the heck Project Fi gives to a
consumer.

I am all ears if someone can tell me of a better GSM plan than what I'm on.
Certainly, my previously-grandfathered plan of $60/month for 4 phones with
zero data was perfect (unlimited everything else); but it had horrendous
overseas costs so I switched to the $100/month plan (with data) and they
won't let me back on the old plan anymore.

I don't claim that I've even *looked* at pre-paid family plans, but if it's
$30/month *per* phone, then that's slighly *worse* than what I have now,
which is:
a. 4 phones
b. Each with unlimited talk & text
c. Each with 2.5GB data (temporarily at 3.5GB for marketing reasons)
d. Europe-travel goodies such as 20 cents a minute when calling in Europe
and unlimited data when traveling in Europe (which is why I switched to
this plan from my $60/month plan as I spend a few months in Europe every
year).

My phones are Nexus 5 (unused at the moment), iPhone 6, Moto G, LG
something, maybe L6, and Galaxy S3, plus a few iPads.

I'd think that's pretty typical of most mixed iOS/Android households.

Prepaid has an appeal as it's an entirely *different* cost model.

But for "postpaid", I have asked my relatives and some friends, and nobody
can match my plan except a few are grandfathered on some wonderful
unlimited-data plans that I envy.

If someone could suggest a GSM post-paid plan that is better than mine, I'd
be all ears though (I don't want to buy all new equipment so that's why
CDMA is out of the picture.)

both gsm and cdma have been replaced with lte, nevertheless, at least
two of the phones you claim to have will work fine on cdma so it does't
actually matter.
