#33604 — Android 7.0 ("Nougat") Home screen

I enrolled my Nexus 5X phone in the Beta program and the Android 7.0
update started downloading almost immediately, then installed.

Some of the pictures I had seen previously showed a different-looking
Home screen, with 5 icons along the bottom instead of 4 plus the
whatever-you-call-it button in the middle, but my Home screen still
looks the same as before.

Update: I have learned that some of the features in the leaked pictures
will not come until a maintenance release.

How's your battery life compared to Marshmallow? Mine is eating it much
faster :-(

I think I've discovered the reason, when WiFi was enabled it was causing
a lot of waking in the "Android OS" and "Android System" processes, i.e.
it was awake about 75% of the time, but strangely only for the first 6
hours after a re-charge, and the waking was making it eat battery at
about 3x the rate compared to when WiFi was off.

With my last three phones (N4, N5 and N5x) I've had the setting "Keep
WiFi on during sleep" set to "on", I can't remember why I wanted it,
perhaps related to K9 push email, it might have eaten a little more
battery, but enough to live with.

Anyway I've now turned that setting from "on" to "only when charging"
and the excess battery drain has gone.

I'll probably exclude K9 from battery optimisation, as it now seems to
not push emails when it's sitting idle on the desk, and then notices the
backlog when I pick it up, which feels the wrong way round to me, I'd
rather pick it up in response to it telling me I've got an email!

Could it be because you're WiFi is constantly searching (or trying to
search) for networks? There's a lot of WiFi problems going on with
Nougat; it keeps on searching which in turn drains the battery.

An issue was opened:
Issue 221056: Nexus 5X does drops WiFi connection on Android 7.0

No, it even did it when in known locations with strong signals, the
battery only started dropping like a stone once the 7.0 upgrade was
installed, it had been fine beforehand ... and thankfully it's back to
2-3 days life rather than 1/2 to 2/3 of a day life again.

I'll keep an eye on it ... interesting that there's a suspicion that
5GHz vs 2.4Ghz may be behind the issue (I'm setup to favour 5GHz) also
the developer wifi debugging is handy.

Today I had a chance to briefly test a 5GHz network. I could connect
without a problem. However, I've read a message where a user claims his
problems start about 10 minutes after he connects to a 5HGz network. I
was only connected for a couple of minutes.

My sister also has a Nexus 5X and after the Nougat update the device
didn't connect automatically anymore. Resetting network settings helped
her out and she doesn't have my problem; she's able to add/save more
than 12 networks.

But I guess I'm lucky. There's one poster who isn't able to connect to
any networks at all...
