Not wanting to wait until my Nexus 5X got Android 7.0 in Google's own
good time, I enrolled it in the beta program and got Android 7.0 (build
NRD90M) within seconds. Fine so far. But today my wife's Nexus 5X, not
enrolled in the beta program, got Android 7.0 (build NRD90R -- with
September 5 security update), while mine is still on NRD90M -- with only
the August 5 security update.)

If your phone is enrolled in the beta program, which build do you have?

Rather than the beta program, why not just sideload it over USB? (I did
that for NRD90M on day1 and the same for NRD90S with the September
security updates.

Where do you get the updates? My previous source hasn't changed since June.
btw I got the update OTA about an hour ago. Now Sept 6.

Usually AndroidPolice are quite quick with the news of any nexus updates.

That link is for factory images. Installing wipes your phone.
I meant the small monthly update files.
I got previous ones from here :

I take back that first line, the OTA doesn't wipe the phone, but it is a complete
system replacement.
I installed one by accident earlier this year and only noticed afterwards
that it was over 1GB, whereas the monthly update was about 11 MB.

That's right, for major version updates some people do provide links to
the update file, never noticed anywhere that does for the monthlies.

A couple of years ago I might have worried about downloading a gigabyte
instead of a few megs, now it's no hassle.

The factory images do indeed wipe your phone, but the OTA images on that
page don't wipe.

> I meant the small monthly update files.

Granted, the OTA images are huge (1.something GB) compared to the OTA
updates, but that's not an issue to me.

Andy, which ADB Tool do you use for this?

I found this instruction video very informing:
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IHrrcEn-PU>

But it's from 2015.

I saw other instructions where fastboot wasn't used, only an adb tool
and cmd to enter instructions.

Since I now have NRD90R installed I'm not going to try and install
NRD90S, but I'm interested to know how it's done, installing an image
from my computer to my phone.

Tnx!

Rather than install the full SDK, this time I used the one from here,

<http://adbshell.com/downloads>

it's obviously not the official place to download from, but you might
need to install the SDK in order to get the device drivers.

Don't know when you did that, but today you can get the released OTA and
factory images and install them.

I realize this might be a stupid question, but I just want confirmation:
the factory image will /delete/ every data, the OTA image will act as if
it's a "real" OTA update and (in principle) none of the data is lost,
yes?

I checked <https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb.html>
and I can't find a download for the adb tool. I searched and there seem
to be several of those tools. Which should I use and where can I find
it?

I have a Nexus 5X, build NRD90M (freshly installed on Sept 8), so I
would need:

7.0.0 (NRD90S)
<https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/bullhead-ota-nrd90s-11bca8c7.zip>

I search and found this video:
How to Use ADB to Sideload an OTA onto Your Nexus
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK4zvbDcRUs>

It doesn't say anything about enabling USB debugging (I enabled
developer options, so enabling this should be a piece of cake), but this
should work for my Nexus 5X, no?

The OTA August update was received on Sept 8 and I'm not sure I want to
wait until October until I receive the September update. Especially with
this WiFi problem. I'm not a complete layman; I used Odin to root my
Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, so...

It seems to be pretty straightforward, but I haven't decided yet what to
do. Resetting network settings enabled WiFi again, but for some reason I
can not add/save more that 12 networks after which the WiFi problem is
there again. Not a huge problem, but it kind of bothers me.

Also, I got the August update on Sept 8. I don't really want to wait
until October to receive the OTA September update. <sigh>

It seems I don't need to update manually. Yesterday evening I received
the September OTA update. My build is now NRD90R which is a bit weird,
because the URL above will show NRD90S as the update for Nexus 5X.

Unfortunately, my WiFi problem stays the same: after adding/saving
networks, all visible networks disappear and when I turn WiFi off and on
it will keep searching for networks (without success).

I have tested connecting to a 5GHz network and this didn't seem a
problem. Connecting to Bluetooth doesn't seem to be a problem either.

Apparently the difference between R and S is something that is only
important on Japanese networks.

Yes, I read that on Reddit.

<https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus5x/comments/51tf4q/september_nougat_ota_is_out_size_is_493_mb_but/>

<quote>

Update: seems like R is for non-Japanese carriers/ international
unlocked devices, S fixes a bug concerning emergency alerts for certain
Japanese carriers. So most users (who didn't flash the S build) will be
receiving NRD90R.

I don't have the beta, the update was offered to me on Sept 8. Build is
NRD90M. I wish I hadn't updated my Nexus 5X to Nougat, because now I'm
experiencing WiFi problems. All wireless networks are gone (as in not
visible) or disappear and WiFi keeps on searching for wireless networks
which of course drains the battery. After an hour or so a connection is
made, but when I switch WiFi off and on, the problem is back.

There are also many complaints about no WiFi at all, no automatic
connections, loosing connections or not being able to connect to 5GHz
networks.

Google advises to reset network settings (which worked partially for me)
or even reset to factory settings. People are reluctant to do that, plus
several users state this doesn't solve their problem.

Lots of topics on problems with WiFi on productforums.google.com:

- Wifi / Bluetooth issues since installing Android 7.0 Nougat on Nexus
6P
- After Nougat Update Wifi disabled
- Nexus 5x Android 7 wifi drops consistently
- After updating my Nexus 5X device to Android 7 WiFi has stopped
working ...

An official (?) "issue" is opened and Google is aware of the problem.

<https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=221056>

However, the issue was posted on Aug 26 and after more than 2 weeks,
Google still hasn't solved this problem.

A Project Member posted a reaction on Sept 8:

| We have passed this defect on to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

Since then, nothing from Google... :-\
