I'll torrent a few directly to my mobile device and check them out.
What I read are *history* books mostly.
Stuff like what is described in this index:
http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalogs/hup-brochure-2012-world-history.pdf

Autobiographies of world leaders also.

Running a quick search for "world history ebook", this pops up:
http://clintonlangham.com/torrent/5038517/world_History

It's in "txt" format though, which brings up a thought of looking for txt
to speech readers.

I have never used a text-to-speech app for reading books (my Android
branded phone has a text-to-speech hands'free option though).

Do text-to-speech apps work reasonably well for large text books?

Any half way decent ebook reader will do that.

The ebook readers that read the books aloud do.

Got a suggestion for the best free ebook reader on either Android or iOS?

Googling, I find Lifehacker says its a Google app:
http://lifehacker.com/5875516/the-best-ereader-for-android

So does Gizmo's:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-ebook-reader-android.htm

And Getstuff:
http://getandroidstuff.com/best-ebook-reader-android-top-5-free-apps-for-epub-and-pdf/

I had googled for 'best free ebook reader' and only Android apps popped up,
so, looking for iOS specifically I find:

Gizmo's says it's the "Kindle Q":
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-ebook-reader-ios.htm

Do you concur?

I prefer Kindle myself, but it likely wont appeal to you given that you
do need to register so that it can keep track of where you are up to
across all your devices so you can continue reading a particular book
at the point you got to previously when you stopped, on a different
device.

In your situation it would be very handy to have one that is fully
integrated with one of those fitness bands that can work out when
you are asleep, so it can stop playing and keep track of where you
got to before you dropped off. Technically difficult to do tho
without sensors on your head etc so it may not be available yet.

Don’t use it myself because I use the real kindle app on iOS and Android and
Win.

Its happy to use anything you torrent or download from one of the free sites
like
Gutenberg, but works best if you register and logon because that allows it
to keep
track of where you got up to in all your ebooks across all your devices that
you
ever read an ebook on.

Ah. Thanks. You know me well. There's no need to *register* to read an
ebook, so, I agree, it doesn't appeal to me in the least.

Registration is a MARKETING ploy.
I downloaded from F-Droid the EPUB3 Reader from MIT, version 1.0.

It says the EPUB format is the de-facto open format for free ebooks.
It doesn't need a registration and it's free.

It doesn't do anything though, because I don't have any ebooks. :)

I get along just fine without registering for, say, Google Maps or Youtube,
so, I should get along fine if the free Kindle ebook app allows me to NOT
register and if it reads all formats.

I don't have Google Play installed, but F-Droid didn't have the Kindle app,
so, I temporarily installed Google Play and made up a temporary
one-time-only Google account name and then downloaded the Kindle app from
Amazon Mobile LLC (package name = com.amazon.kindle).

The app installed version 7.2.0.27 into /data/app/com.amazon.kindle-1.apk
and the data directory it created was /data/data/com.amazon.kindle but, as
you noted, it doesn't seem to work without requiring a registration.

I couldn't skip past it, so I deleted both Kindle and Google Play.

OTOH it should work fine without registering if you arent getting
the ebooks from amazon and don’t need to have it keep track
of where you are up to in the ebooks you are reading across
a variety of devices you have the ebooks read to you on.

Since you go to sleep with the ebook reader still reading
the ebook to you, you have to keep track of where you
got up before you dropped off yourself anyway.

> Registration is a MARKETING ploy.

Nope, it is essential for keeping track of where you got up
to in the ebooks you are reading across the devices you use
to read ebooks on and to keep track of what FREE ebooks
you have got from Amazon.

> I downloaded from F-Droid the EPUB3 Reader from MIT, version 1.0.

Just as true of Kindle.

> It doesn't do anything though, because I don't have any ebooks. :)

Trivially fixable. Plenty are torrentable and on Gutenberg etc.

Sure, the main downside with not doing that with google maps
is that it doesn’t allow you to have it remember your home location
or offer you one of the places you have navigated to before so
you only have to type a few letters to have it offer you the same
place again the next time you need to navigate to there.

With youtube you can't upload your own private videos.
That is a quite useful way of allowing others to watch
the videos you have produced without having to give
them something physical like a USB stick etc, particularly
if you are too stupid to ever use a cloud.

And that's another thing bit of FUNCTIONALITY that
iOS has that androids don’t. If you choose to email
a video to someone, it offers to put it on their cloud
and just have the link to that in the email.

> so, I should get along fine if the free Kindle ebook app

Doesn’t really need to be able to read all formats, its
trivial to convert formats with Calibre which does run
on linux and all the other major desktop OSs and is free.

Mad when you want to have the ebooks read to you on your ipads.

It does actually with ebooks that you have on your device.

I think you hit upon a *major* distinction between the average iOS user and
the average Android user, as defined by those who post their comments here.

It seems the average iOS poster here wants desperately to *feel* safe, but
they also don't want to do a whole lot of thinking - so - the one-and-only
iOS App Store serves both purposes:
1. Apple MARKETING makes this iOS user *feel* safe
2. Therefore, this iOS user doesn't have to think all that much.

In total contrast, this Android user wants to *be* safe(r) and doesn't mind
*thinking* about the apps, and where I get them, and what they do.

That's the major distinction:
a. The iOS user wants to *feel* safe and think less; and therefore they put
up with the huge limitations of the ecosystem which allows them to not
think at all (which is what they prefer most).

b. This Android user wants to *be* safe(r) but also doesn't mind having to
think a bit about where he gets his apps, and what they do, and how to work
around what they do.

The iOS user deprecates thinking, avoiding it at all cost, and, even saying
many times that having to think to get what they want is what they abhor
most.

They'd much rather Apple MARKETING do all the thinking for them.
Which is why Apple is one of the most profitable companies on earth.

99+ per cent of (sane) Android owners like to be safe too.

As does Google Marketing with the Android user. Course they couldn't
have foreseen Android users dying by fire/explosion could they... 8-O

Ah, but most Android users aren't that paranoid.

In a separate thread, we have already shown that *nobody* is safe using a
cellphone, simply because the technology of the consumer cellphone is
unsafe.

So, the iOS user, as usual, is deluded by the Apple M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G which
only makes them *feel* safe, and which makes them feel that they can leave
the DECISIONS to Apple MARKETING, whom they *think* will *keep* them safe.

The average iOS user:
a. Doesn't want to think (they want Apple to do their thinking for them),
b. And, wants desperately to *feel* safe based on those Apple decisions.

Meanwhile, Apple laughs all the way to the bank.
(And the hackers laugh just as much.)

Have they?
Really?

While you can easily set the permissions of any app on either iOS or
Android, you can't even *remove* the AdId on iOS for heaven's sake.
Meanwhile, you can easily remove the AdId on Android.

And neither is safe from SS7 flaws...

>> - so - the one-and-only iOS App Store serves both purposes:

Heh heh ... let's say that I have a much better opinion of the power of
Apple M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G than you do.

They are the finest in the world at convincing the consumer to let *THEM*
do the thinking for the consumer.

And they laugh all the way to the bank as a result.

>> 2. Therefore, this iOS user doesn't have to think all that much.

Actually, I do think when using iOS equipment.
For example, I got a free 64GB iPhone 6 for a relative recently, which
we're going to turn into a free 32GB iPhone 7 if she wants.

Likewise, I got free iPads and I only paid something like $200 years ago
for an iPhone 3 that I jailbroke to work with T-Mobile.

So, sometimes, even "I" can think when on iOS (but I try to get everything
for free and that takes intelligence and effort).

Any fool can spend money to get something.
It takes intelligence to get the best, for free.

Huh?
I don't understand that statement in the least.
Would you kindly rephrase?

I use Google Play only when I need to.
Otherwise, it's turned off and the account is deleted:
http://cubeupload.com/im/bEVyw7.png

>> That's the major distinction:
>

I think it is.
a. The iOS user wants to *feel* safe, and,
b. They abdicate all responsibility allowing Apple MARKETING to make their
decisions for them.

Otherwise, why can't the iOS user install something as simple as a
bittorrent app or an automatic call recorder?

Every time I ask, nospam says they're not safe.
Who decides they're not safe?
Answer = APPLE MARKETING

>> a. The iOS user wants to *feel* safe
>
> They KNOW they are MUCH safer.

Usually I learn the most about iOS users from the simplest of all users
(e.g., Jamie KG or the Jolly Troll), but what I've learned from you more
complex users is that you desperately want to abdicate all decisions to
APPLE MARKETING on how to *feel* safer.

That's why it's ok with nospam that APPLE MARKETING decides that torrents
are bad, or that automatic call recording is bad.

He's perfectly happy abdicating all safety questions to Apple MARKETING.
And Apple MARKETING is perfectly happy to make those decisions for him.
Meanwhile, they laugh all the way to the bank.

>
>> and therefore they put up with the huge limitations of the ecosystem
>
> There are fuck all limitations with the ecosystem.

If there aren't limitations with the ecosystem, then tell me how it does
automatic call recording of *more* than 200 phone calls, except that it
won't record phone calls from contacts you list in the whitelist, and it's
all free?

What's that?
The ecosystem can't do that?

How about torrenting a file?
Can't even do that?

How about a full-fledged app drawer so that you can hide less-often-used
apps? What? Can't even do something as simple as that?

What about organizing the icons on the desktop in any grid you want?
What?
It can't even organize icons?

What is this brain-dead primitive ecosystem for heaven's sake?

We have abdicated NOTHING.

We arent desperate either, we just have enough of a clue to

Gutenberg is the place to go for free books. That includes audio books
<https://www.gutenberg.org/browse/categories/1>. Your local library
almost certainly has them too but you they may not be available in a
format that suits your player.

Thanks for the pointer.
Remember, the whole point is the *audio*, not the book, per se.
So the *player* has to have the capability of reading out the text in the
background with the screen turned off.

That's what this thread is about, after all.

Audio books are, by definition, audio. The problem with audio books
from your local library is that they will probably be DRM encoded.
That means that you will either need to break the DRM or use their
application for listening to them. That application will be free but
will ensure that you "return" the book on time.
>So the *player* has to have the capability of reading out the text

I think the computer conversion of text to speech will not meet your
needs. Start with real audio books that have been "converted" by a
human, preferably a human whose voice you like. TTS will result in a
dreary tone that could put you to sleep but you will be startled every
few minutes by the gross, often comic, mispronunciation of names that
you are familiar with.
>
> in the background with the screen turned off.
> That's what this thread is about, after all.

I assume you already have an audio player that allows you to listen
without having anything on the screen.

Gutenberg has audiobooks? I think not. You maybe thinking of
Librivox: https://librivox.org/ Also, you can easily locate a free
software service that will convert from youtube format to mp3 which is
what most audioplayers, hardware and software, easily handle.
