Hi Bev,
I do appreciate your advice.

What is nice is that you're not testosterone fueled so you don't get into
pissing contents like the rest of them do.

Thanks for that video converter & audio extractor web site.
Please do not use it.

There are *far better* ways to convert videos to any other format desired,
and to extract audio from any existing video. Besides, converting an
existing video or extracting the audio was never the problem.

The problem was simply playing the audio portion of the video with the
screen off on iOS (it always just worked on Android).h

But I do appreciate the advice.

As for converting videos to any desired format, or extracting audio from
any existing video, on Linux, a great freeware tool which does pretty much
everything you can ask for, is "handbrake".

On Windows, an *older* version (before they went commercial) is "Super",
freeware which will convert essentially anything you want to anything else
you can think of. I just checked on my Windows machine and version 2010
build 38 works just fine without obnoxious ads (none of my freeware has
*any* ads - to me - adware is not freeware).
XXXXX

Those are generally acknowledged as the best for video conversion and audio
extraction; however I'm unfamiliar with the Mac so I can't suggest a Mac
equivalent.

Having said that, video conversion and audio extraction were never the
problem. The problem was simply playing youtube documentaries with the
screen off on Android was obvious - but it took the
shut-the-screen-three-times trick kindly suggested by Rod Speed to get it
to work on iOS.

Now everything is fine and working perfectly.

i told you how, and it only needs to be done *twice* if you use safari
and *once* if you use an app that supports background audio.

as usual, you fucked up.

Yup! I have been using Handbrake on my Macs for some 12+ years.

Thanks Savageduck for suggesting the Mac app, which apparently is the same
as the recommended Linux app (which is not surprising, but that's not
always the case, as in openvpn versus tunnelblick, for example).

Any photo/video editor/converter suggested by you is almost certainly the
best out there, as you are the acknowledged expert in these here parts on
audiovisual apps and you've been around a very long time (by the way, do
you remember Bill Dees?)

So this post isn't for your benetif; this post is mostly for Bev's benefit
since none of us would likely be posting video files to a web site (for
heaven's sake) for conversion or extraction.

Think of the wasted bandwith, if nothing else, and the lack of ability to
set the dials and to play with various scenarios, and the tracking, etc.

Suffice to say, using a *web* site for almost anything video-conversion
related is utterly crazy.

Most of us use a standalone offline video converter/editor (e.g., ffmpeg).

However, for Bev's benefit, here's just the opening screen of dials for
Super freeware on my Windows machine (I'm not on Linux right now).
http://i.cubeupload.com/jcichP.gif

Handbrake (for Mac/Linux) would be similar in functionality to Super on
Windows.

NOTE: Freeware and adware are two different things, so be careful with
Super because it went rogue a couple of years ago but the older versions
are archived (I always archive everything so I always have the good
versions handy).

PS: While I'm an avowed freeware junkie, I don't use adware unless there's
nothing else out there, and even then, I would rather forgo the capability
than look at ads - so I doubt I have a single piece of adware on my Windows
or Linux machines.

he didn't suggest it and it's not a mac app either. handbrake is a
cross-platform app that *you* mentioned, except that you were ignorant
about it existing on a mac even though the handbrake website clearly
says it's available on macs.

all open source linux apps will be the same on a mac.

OK.

We all use Handbrake on Linux because it's good stuff.

Sometimes, the best free Linux apps are the same on the Mac, such as
Handbrake.

Sometimes they're not.

For example, why is the best free Linux app for SSL VPN, which is openvpn,
*not* on the Mac?

The best free Mac equivalent is tunnelblick.

So it's not 1:1 that the best linux apps are the best Mac apps.
Apparently, openvpn isn't even available on the Mac.

Even though open vpn is available on *every* other platform!
(Windows, Linux, Android, and yes, even iOS)

Why is that?
I don't know.

Do you?

It's not that.

It's that it's crazy to use a web site for almost *any* large file
conversion.

There are so many reasons that it's crazy that I won't list them.

The only way you'd use a web site for a large file conversion is if there
was absolutely no other way to perform the task you need to perform.

Luckily, there are other great ways to do file conversion (or audio
extraction) without using a web site.

Maybe, just maybe, Handbrake on Windows would offer similar
functionality as Handbrake on Mac/Linux.

It doesn't seem to support my platform.

Just another example of what you platform
can't do that any decent platform can do.

A Jap would at least have the decency to disembowel itself.

Don’t make a mess of the carpet.

From my WWII knowledge, they often have their heads cut off before they're
finished - so - um - *that* must make a mess...

Not so much anymore.

Sure, but easy to avoid making a mess of the carpet
by doing it outside so the worst anyone has to do is
pressure wash the blood and gore away afterwards.

I wouldn't know what they do "nowadays" as I know history, and, well,
anyone who knows history can never have a good opinion of the Japanese
people.

However, when I go there today, I look for cruel merciless racist people,
and all I find are the racists.

I guess. The Japanese are funny people because they use the Bushido code to
rape babies and bayonet them and to cut pregnant women open after raping
them.

That's the Bushido code in a nutshell... (in practice).

They hardly ever get someone to chop their head off anymore.

Presumably there arent many who are willing to do that anymore.

They did do rather better than most moving
on from the worst they got up to during WW2.

Plenty of them arent.

Bullshit it is.

They raped anything that had an opening between their legs.

Of course, the Russians did the same to the ladies of Berlin, at least
until they started getting a black eye in the International community.

What's odd is that the inhumanity is so widespread to entire armies, yet,
so localized to certain countries.

When you visit *those* countries, the people don't seem at all as barbaric
as their acts.

They didn’t give a damn about the international community.

That’s a lie too.

  *Which* 'platform' might that be?

*You* wrote - and 'conveniently' snipped:

You're not a Mac or Windows user and you have bored everyone to death
with your praise of Linux. So what are you saying? That Ubuntu isn't
Linux? That you're too incompetent to get a Linux program from one
distribution to another? Other?

Hey, Bub, I got your testosterone RIGHT HERE! I used to keep it under
the hood of my car, but I drive a Corolla now :-(

BUT keeping the useless video part on your phone seems like a needless
waste of space if it's not needed.

Hubby likes to listen to lectures while he runs, using a Sansa Clip.
Only a few of them actually need video (blackboard math, for instance),
but that's what the computer is for :-)

at least someone else realized that bit of stupidity.
