Thanks for understanding.
Nospam just makes this stuff up.
He even *sees* that all the files were audio files.
Yet, he *needs* to make this stuff up because he has no argument otherwise.

Someone needs to teach you what the word "audio" and "extract audio" and
"download audio" means.

I agree with you.

That's why I either play the audio with the screen blanked, or, I just
extract the audio (which is much smaller than the video) and then I can
play the audio at will offline.

Yup. I like documentaries that dispense with the music too, if I can find
them.

The one huge problem with most war and history documentaries is that they
re-use the same clips over and over and over and over and over again.

I mean, I can find the *same* tank attack clips in almost any WWII
documentary. So, the problem with the type of documentary I listen most to
(history) is that they desperately strive to fill in the story with
meaningless clips where *all* (and I mean *all*) the sounds are dubbed.

I mean, do I really need to hear the crunching of soldiers in a WWI
documentary? Certainly the video had no audio when it was taken. Why dub
the sounds of engines when tanks move? It's just a waste of audio to go
with the wasted video. I know what a tank looks like when it moves.

All I care about in the documentaries is the commentary.
That's what I learn from.

I don't learn a thing from looking at pictures of planes bombing Dresden.
They use the same video for planes bombing Berlin for heaven's sake.

Likewise, I learn nothing when they play a faked sound of airplanes taking
off. I know what airplanes sound like when taking off. I even know what a
dive bomber sounds like when dive bombing. I don't need *that* audio.

I just want the commentary.

I don’t.

They don’t have any real choice on that given the dearth of the best
footage.

Because of the dearth of the best footage.

> So, the problem with the type of documentary I listen most to (history)

Sure, but someone just droning on can get pretty boring too.

That's why they usually have someone swanning around in most docos,
mostly not really adding very much at all to the content of the doco.

Plenty of them don’t.

> It's just a waste of audio to go with the wasted video.

Makes very little difference to the size of the file.

> I know what a tank looks like when it moves.

> All I care about in the documentaries is the commentary.
> That's what I learn from.

But the visuals can be crucial. That magnificent series
"24 Hours In Emergency" would be vastly less interesting
if it was just commentary and no visuals. That little kid
getting a substantial cut on his arm stitched up in
"24 Hours In Emergency : One Step At A Time" would
be nothing like what it was without the visuals.

> I don't learn a thing from looking at pictures of planes bombing Dresden.

But you do get a lot from the visuals of how
comprehensive the damage on the ground was.

> They use the same video for planes bombing Berlin for heaven's sake.

Sure, but there is a dearth of the best of that footage.

> Likewise, I learn nothing when they play a faked sound of airplanes
> taking off. I know what airplanes sound like when taking off.

But you have to be there when a Vulcan has just done a low
pass over the crowd and then applied full power and all the
afterburners and blasted damned near straight up in the
air vertically with the engines blasting straight at you for
an experience you will never ever forget in a hurry until
the althiemers overwhelms you.

> I even know what a dive bomber sounds like
> when dive bombing. I don't need *that* audio.

You may not but kids seeing it for the first time do.

> I just want the commentary.

I want a lot more than the commentary quite a bit of the time.

True in spades of situations like this, the commentary
is completely irrelevant and completely superfluous
except where it spells out where it was and what
happened to him after the footage.

Music is a funny thing. It's often used to stir up emotion.
Think of Jaws or any thriller, for example.
Or of a tear jerker.

Music is emotion.
Nothing wrong with that.

It just doesn't belong in a documentary, IMHO.

I completely understand that the documentary author has no choice but to
reuse footage. But I've seen the same clip a thousand times of the guys
getting machine gunned during Operation Overlord. They use it constantly.

It loses its value after the hundredth video using the same stock footage.
And they always dub in the sounds anyway, so, it's also faked (audio).

Me? I just want the commentary.
The *only* thing I like in the video are the maps.

The Soviet Storm Operation Bagration videos, for example, have great
Russian Maps. I can't understand the name of the smaller cities, but the
larger ones are clear even though they're in Cyrillic text.

>> I mean, I can find the *same* tank attack clips in almost any WWII

Yup. We agree. How many times do I have to see the same civilians running
from a bombing, for example. Or, even worse, the Japanese soldiers playing
ants as they use the men as the bridge abutment. It's used so often that it
has no value anymore.

And those horrid sounds. Oh, don't they know that we know that EVERY sound
in those older movies is dubbed? Do I really need to hear faked boots
crunching on snow when they show the Russian propaganda film of the
surrender of Paulus' army in Stalingrad?

It's probably some guy tiptoeing with his fingers in a bowl of corn flakes
anyway, since they have to *make* the sounds themselves.

I agree. I never said that the dubbing increases the size of teh file.
It just makes it harder to discern text.

Besides, hearing someone swish his fingers through corn flakes doesn't
really add to the "realism" of the documentary, IMHO.

I just watched the Lyndon Johnson "Daisy Girl" propaganda video against
Barry Goldwater. *That* would be nothing without the visuals.

But that's propaganda.

Yeah. But I've seen plenty of cities dresdonized.
The Japanese had about 60 cities dresdonized before the bomb was dropped.

Bombing has no effect in and of itself in a major war.
Sure, it damages things and slows 'em down, but London was bombed and they
didn't cave in. Moscow was bombed and they didn't cave in.

Only the Dutch cave in the moment you mention the word bomb.
Nobody else does.

I don’t agree with that at all. That magnificent doco series
"24 Hours In Emergency" is much better because of the very
effective music.

Because they have no choice on that given that there is a dearth
of the best footage for what should be rather obvious reasons.

There is no viable alternative.

Because no one was actually silly enough to
take along a full film crew to those events.

That magnificent doco series "24 Hours In Emergency"
would be nothing even remotely like it actually is with
just the commentary.

> The *only* thing I like in the video are the maps.

Mad. Watching what happens with a tank boil up leaves for dead
someone trying to describe it. In spades with that graphic 9/11
footage of the planes flying into the buildings and the people
deciding that a quick death by jumping leaves burning to death too.

And Omran sitting stunned and dazed in that orange chair in spades.

We've just had one of our docos expose what happens in juvenile
jails with some arsehole of a kid in a spit hood tied down on a
restraint chair that put one hell of a bomb under the prison
administration and ended up getting the minister in charge sacked.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/nt-youths-may-be-moved-from-don-dale-to-wickham-point/news-story/b9119482dc97401f25b565fc288f636d

That was a doco that put one hell of a bomb under the industry
and produced a full royal commission in quite literally days.

That last is just plain wrong.

The early war footage was in fact entirely faked after the event.

Its much more likely canned soundclips of the real thing.

I get it. You want film makers to make truly boring documentaries that
will put everyone to sleep. Why not go to sleep with a good audio
book? A book will provide the detail that you seem to want and the
rest of us can watch an absorbing video. Most people have not seen so
many documentaries that they know the details of every clip used to
illustrate the story.

I have no experience with audio books.
So, I don't even know how to find them.
Are they on youtube?

If you want free try:
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks

There are all sorts of things to be found there from history(Civil War,
WWI, WWII), to good/great novels, scifi, etc. You might have to dig
through some crap to find something which matches your taste. The only
caveat is having a Usenet provider which supports binary groups.

Libraries exist for this reason.

Mine is a very high end library who buys pretty much anything I have ever
asked them to get for me.

The cost is in my property taxes, which cost more each year than some
people's homes cost (in low-cost areas, anyway).

Save a few dollars by using only free apps. Save $10-20/book at the
library. Save $1/day by using Google Voice and Hangouts. But living in a
house costing megabucks? Wouldn't that be penny wise and pound foolish? 8-O

You have a point.
We pay for the view.
We can see almost the entire Silicon Valley at night.
But it's not free.

Thanks for the well intentioned advice, because I only use free stuff and
if I want to *read* a book, I normally just get it from the library (mine
buys almost any book you ask them to get for you).

I don't do binaries on Usenet, but I could - so I'll take a look at that
newsgroup so that I can obtain them directly onto the mobile device.

I would think I can also torrent them directly quite easily onto my mobile
device, although I've never looked for audio-book torrents so I'm just
assuming they exist.

I can use any of a few dozen free Usenet servers, so, that's not the
problem.

I think also the local library must do audio books since they have their
very own branded mobile app that they keep trying to push on us.

I go to the library almost every day, so, I'll ask them later on today as I
am going on a hike so when I get back, I'll head to the library.

Thanks for the well-intentioned advice.

Hordes of them are torrentable and even more are on amazon etc.

Any decent ebook reader can play the ebook to audio.
