Are you using IMAP?

If no, the draft will only be local to Thunderbird.

If yes, you might want to alter the drafts folder in Thunderbird to be
the same folder gmail uses (don't think I've used Thunderbird with
gmail, but have had to alter names to match with other servers e.g.
outlook.com)

No idea what this means. "Drafts" is "Drafts".

You'd like to think so wouldn't you? And "Sent" would be "Sent" rather
than "Sent Items" similar for Archives, Outbox, Deleted, Junk, etc, but
some combinations of mail client and server will disagree about the
names of some of these folders from time to time, maybe even what
language the folder name is in.

But I've just looked at my thunderbird which talks to 5 different mail
servers, and it doesn't appear that "Drafts" is one where they have
disagreed.

If I write a draft with my computer at the website I can see it on my
phone, but I HATE going to the website :-(

OK, that worked. Unfortunately BlueMail interprets the CRs as CRCRs and
ignores the tab characters :-( I only use email on my phone when I'm
going to be gone from home for a couple of days, so it's not worth
putting back AND CONFIGURING K9 and I refuse to use the resident gmail
app on principle -- I want to be able to only download mail for a single
account when *I* want to do it ("push" is evil) and the gmail app
refuses to allow that.

More and more I'm thinking I should just write the list on my computer
and take a picture of it with my phone :-(

Dunno about your mail client but in K-9 Mail you can turn
off background sync so there's no push. You manually do the
new mail updates. Course then you also have to manually do
the draft updates. Maybe your client has something similar.

In K-9: settings>global settings>network>background sync>never.

You can do that with Bluemail, too. It's been explained to her
previously in great detail. She doesn't want to know.

Or you can include Drafts with the manual check. Both K9 and
Bluemail can do that.

It does. I believe the Gmail app can as well.

Yeahyeahyeah. I know that the Inbox downloaded, it was just the Drafts
that I wanted. Apparently the fact that I had both POP and IMAP enabled
caused Drafts to not download. The Drafts from the IMAP-only account
downloaded properly.

Last I looked, gmail was 'sync everything' or 'sync nothing and whine a
lot'. Maybe it's different now.

That is not an issue with Linux, but an issue with how you interface with
GMail.

Nope. If you are using the gmail web client (https://mail.google.com/),
then the draft will be stored where other GMail clients (another web
session on a different computer, you Android phone with GMail, ....)
can and will see it. If you use IMAP to talk to GMail, what happens with
your draft is at the mercy of your client. I'm not using Thunderbird,
but one possibility is that Thunderbird keeps drafts strictly local and
only send the data to gmail when actually _sending_ the email.

Kind regards,
           Alex.

Thunderbird saves its drafts to the server by default, although it's
possible to configure it to save them locally.

I'm not familiar with the mail side of TB though I've used
the newsgroup side often. If you're using IMAP then it
should work. However if you're set up as a POP account then no.

My various Android devices use K-9 mail (as IMAP)in which
the system works fine. I just write an outgoing email (as a
note) on any one of them and then hit the 'save as draft'
menu button. It then shows up on all my other devices
(including the website).

Some of my drafts are years old. My telephone list, address
list, books read (so I don't accidentally buy one I read
years ago and forgot about), all my passwords-well over
50(encrypted but easily decrypted in my head), drip
irrigation settings winter/summer, Gmail backup codes,
birthdays, car/insurance/plate/vin/expire, etc etc etc...

Audio Manager Pro
setup different audio profiles, with schedules, which allows you to control the level of the 5 audio channels by day/time.
a widget allows cycling through all the profiles.
There's a free version which, IIRC, is the same but without the schedule capability.

Power Toggles
provides a widget which allows you to toggle various settings normally buried several layers deep in Settings:
WiFi, mobile data, GPS, Blutooth etc.

OS Monitor
Similar to Linux "top", or Windows Task Manager.
See which pesky task/app. is eating your battery in the background and hopefully terminate it with extreme prejudice (unfortunately not all tasks can be terminated).

Highways England
If your sat. nav. doesn't have traffic info.

PowerAmp unlocked
    the "best" music player.

All the BBC apps.

If you have Sky or BT TV then their related apps.
