These are all excuses to apologize for the fact that it should be trivial
to play the desired audio in the background with the video display off.

On Android, it's trivial: tap tap done.

On iOS, nobody has shown how to do it yet despite nospam's and Rod Speeds's
typical game playing where they say they can do it but neither can explain
how.

What they both do is apologize for iOS' shortcomings, by arguing that you
want the screen on at night to play audio files.

That's the typical Apple MARKETING approach (e.g., they argue such things
that essentially intimate that everything on bittorrent is illegal or that
all phone records are illegal or that the mere ability to see the file
system will induce a heart attack in iOS users or that an iOS mobile device
is somehow magically immune from SS7 privacy flaws, etc.).

Nope.

Not with the idevice face down, even

BULLSHIT. And it is trivially easy to blank the screen anyway.

BULLSHIT with idevices.

How?

Your method clearly does not work as the screen isn't off.

It makes so much sense that we shouldn't even have to *explain* why we'd
want audio to play in the background and why we'd want a display blanked
out at night.

Anyone arguing against that is merely trying to apologize for the fact that
it's trivial to do on Android (tap tap done) and not so easily done on iOS.

I don't do podcasts, so, to work around the iOS deficiencies in playing
youtube audio with the screen off, do you know if the podcast players can
play youtube URLs?

Probably not - but maybe there is a viable workaround there somewhere???

Possibly, but I am not aware of it.
Note that I have not searched for it yet.

My favourity podcast player Podcast Addict
can manage youtube video podcasts,
but the playing is always forwarded to youtube application.

Probably to a browser instead
if youtube app is unistalled/disabled.

Um.....it's pretty obvious why one would want to play audio at night with
the display blanked, especially as the goal is to eventually fall asleep
without having to touch the device; so for you to call that desire for a
blanked display at night "stupid" is an extremely narrow view of an
obviously valid desire.

You play games just like nospam does.
What does the addon do?
a. Does it download the audio of the two-hour video?
b. Or does it allow the display to be turned off while the video plays?

Here are my two test videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfRq-JeUCSM (WWII documentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9XzLzMAQ-Q (History of the World)

What is the name of the addon that plays the audio of those two videos with
the screen off?

I'm on iOS 9.3.2 and Chrome of 52.0.2743.84.
When I blank the screen, the youtube video stops playing.

I assume you're saying you routinely extract the audio from two-hour long
documentaries, which is the workaround here.
http://i.cubeupload.com/fBB7vI.jpg

As noted, this is trivial on Android (tap, tap, done).
http://i.cubeupload.com/CR6xjY.jpg

How do you just as easily download just the audio from Youtube on iOS?

Most are geared toward very short 15-minute youtube music videos.

Which work with typical 2-hour documentaries such as these two?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfRq-JeUCSM (WWII documentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9XzLzMAQ-Q (History of the World)

You act like nospam's brother.
You say it's trivial.

On Android, it's clearly tap-tap-done, whether you play the video online in
a browser or whether you download just the audio with a single tap (where
you can download multiple 2-hour audios just by tapping, with no
registration required and no external servers required other than youtube
itself).

How again do you accomplish that on iOS?

What add on for iOS downloads just the audio for multiple two-hour youtube
documentaries as easily as NewPipe does on Android?

What combination of Chrome and iOS are you using?
Blanking the iOS 9.3.2 screen with a youtube video playing in Chrome
52.0.2743.84 causes the video to stop playing on iOS.

(It works fine in Android, as I said from the start.)

In iOS 9.3.2, with the youtube video playing in Chrome 52.0.2743.84, when I
hit the "home" button, the video stops playing.

What version of Chrome and iOS are you using?

You say that that, without backing up a thing you say.
In contrast, I back up *everything* I say.

You have zero credibility.
I always prove my statements out.

When we finally get the solution on iOS, we'll compare how *simple* the iOS
solution is, compared to the tap-tap-done solution that we already have for
Android.

Given how restricted iOS is, almost certainly the solution on iOS will be
far more complex than the simple solutions we already have for Android.

So far, nobody has suggested a solution that actually works on iOS.
They just "say" it without providing enough information to actually do it.

>> Due to those arbitrary iOS limitations, I'm apparently forced to extract

On Android, I explained two tap-tap-done methods for playing the audio, one
of which requires extracting the audio while the other doesn't require
anything.

On iOS, it remains to be seen how we can accomplish this simple task.

>> Googling for how to extract the audio from a long youtube documentary,

Except that most of them are restricted.
Most can't handle two-hour videos.
Some require registration and other unnecessary steps.

Remember, on Android, it's tap-tap done.
All I'm asking is for something very simple on iOS to be similarly easy.

For you to say that it's stupid to play an audio file at night with the
screen off, is for you to reveal how your mind actually works.

You may not want to play audio in the background with the screen off at
night, but it's not a stupid goal for many other people.

So, all you really prove is your limited mindset.

>> QUESTION FOR ANDROID USERS:
>> Do you know of a better way to accomplish the task?

I haven't seen any "list" from you yet and certainly none of the above
makes the process I've already implemented on Android any better.

I agree that the simplest goal is to just *play* the audio of the youtube
documentary online and then to blank the screen.

But, as usual, the method you suggested doesn't work when you really try
it, so, we'll have to see if someone else actually knows what they're
talking about.

Go and find it for yourself, I didn’t bother to record it, it popped up

Yes, but all you have to do is do what I listed below to

Just as trivial when you want it on iOS, use any decent

Just as true of iOS as I have elaborated above. In fact with the youtube app

for youtube that allows what he wants with a single tap
of the power button. And you never tried that, you fucking

I tested a few youtube downloaders and of those I tested, *none* worked due
to arbitrary restrictions on numbers of files and file lengths (in
minutes), etc.

Some required registration; others mailed the file to you (which is
ridiculous for a file this large), etc.

On Android, using NewPipe, it's basically a youtube app replacement that
also downloads either the audio or the video so it's even easier to use
than the youtube app is to use.

If there were an app similar to NewPipe on iOS, that would be perfect.
a. NewPipe plays any youtube video
b. NewPipe downloads any youtube video (in the background)
c. NewPipe extracts just the youtube audio (for smaller files)

No restrictions (that I know of), no file length problem, no number of
files issue (that I know of), etc.

If such an app exists for iOS, that would be great, but I searched the App
Store and didn't find any that did what NewPipe does.

All that proves is that you are as hopeless at finding the

Much more viable to use the youtube app addon that allows
you to tap the power button just once to turn the screen off and
continues to play the video in the standard youtube app which
will continue to be updated as youtube enhances its capabilitys.

But were too stupid to realise that it makes a lot more
sense to use the addon to the standard youtube app
that allows you to turn the screen off with a single tap
of the power button and still have the youtube video
playing in the background and even allows you to switch
away to anything you like and have the youtube video
keep playing in the background for you to listen to
instead of farting around downloading anything.

That may be true, but, the obvious fact that *nobody* yet has suggested a
free iOS youtube downloader similar to the one I use on Android that works
for the two-hour videos without registration and without need to go to a
web site, allowing any number of simultaneous downloads and extractions,
etc., pretty much confirms then that you are really saying *everyone* in
iOS land is as hopeless at finding apps that don't actually exist as I am.

On Android, it was trivial to find the app that did the job.
On iOS, *nobody* can find an app that can do what New Pipe already does.

That's because it doesn't exist.

Agreed that the mysterious youtube app add on "would" be a better solution,
if it existed.

Meanwhile, New Pipe already exists on Android.

As always, the iOS app doesn't exist.
So you deprecate that the capability exists in Android.

Just like you deprecate an App Drawer even though the capabilities don't
even exist in iOS that an App Drawer app can do.

You iOS people sure are an odd lot.

That mysterious iOS app you speak of would be wonderful.
If it actually existed.

You'll say "it does"; but nobody yet on iOS can even *name* it.

Nope, they have enough of a clue to realise that it makes a

http://audio-extractor.net/

claims to convert a video file to a variety of sound formats. I would
ALWAYS do stuff like this on the computer and copy it to the phone.
It's just so much easier.

If this doesn't work, there are a lot of other choices if you google for
extract sound video.
