I have a Lenovo Phab Plus, the model was made for the Chinese market but I got it (new) for £200 from eBay from an enterprising seller who seems to have shipped a load in to the UK. I have installed Facebook Messenger on it to keep in touch with daughter. Anything good or bad known about this app? In theory it works over the Internet so no charges. I have also installed Pushbullet which links my laptop and 'phone together so that I can send & receive texts from the laptop which is quite neat. Again I think it is free but if anybody knows different I'd like to know. I have used computers since the Commodore Vic 20 and the BBC Micro but since this 'phone is the first that is actually big enough for me to use comfortably I'd be interested by any recommendations for "must have" apps to make it even more useful/usable. My deal with BT gives me free WiFi pretty well anywhere in the UK so I have Internet access most of the time without using mobile data. Thanks. -- Jeff Gaines Wiltshire UK All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand.

The new Google Duo sounds good and does video calling over WiFi - but it may be difficult to stop it using 4G when there is no WiFi signal. There are so many useful phone apps it's quite hard to pick out the best. However, I wouldn't like to be without:- WPS Office or similar - you may already have it as standard. Dropbox As you have BT WiFi:- The BT WiFi app BT mobile app (if you have their Mobile SIM too ) If you intend to use Wifi a lot:- Wifi Analyser (by Kevin Yuan). SWIFI (free) to optimise connections. Barcode Scanner (by ZXing) I have several others which I use extensively, but they are all related to specific interests of mine, or specific firms or products. The only one for which I paid significant cash is the CoPilot satnav app. I prefer this and my phone to any of the dedicated Satnavs I have tried, and is more efficient since I always have my phone with me anyway - even in other people's cars. The European map set and voice navigation has a lifetime licence costing about £20, from memory. None of these may be of interest, of course - but they all work well. -- Bob Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England What if there were no hypothetical questions?

Many thanks Bob :-) I have the BT Apps but had a look at the others you suggest. I think I have to follow my daughter on messaging or I won't hear from her! The WiFi scanner and barcode analyser are very neat and work well. It's new territory for me as this is the first 'phone that is big enough for me to operate while still portable. I do have an AnTeck (Chinese) device with a 9.6" screen which takes a SIM and identifies itself as a 'phone but I feel a real pratt holding it to my ear!!! What I especially like about K-9 Mail is the ability to have six lines of the message shown on the incoming mail list. In most cases I can then just scroll the list and read the mail at the same time. If there are no replies then a simple select all/delete finishes the session. For Gmail users like me: It's a little tricky to first set up since you need to obtain a special app password in settings but that's a one time thing and from there on works flawlessly.

I'm not sure what to recommend in its place, though. > K-9 Mail: Enables me to monitor multiple email accounts when on the > move Definitely. The stock Android EMail app has many shortcomings, and K9 is much more functional. [FWIW the one that annoys me most is that the stock Android app doesn't create an "In-Reply-To" header when sending a reply, so desktop clients like Thunderbird do not see the message as part of the existing mail thread.] I'll also put in a plug for RealCalc, which is an excellent and well-featured calculator app with scientific functions and base conversion features. I'm also quite fond of the Google Docs family of apps, especially Google Keep as a note-taker (but then I'm not paranoid enough to worry that the boys and girls in Mountain View are nosy enough or sad enough to be interested in what I keep in their cloud -- were I so, I shouldn't be using Android at all -- YMMV). -- Cheers, Daniel.

Yes, that's true, and it is a concern. The things I tend to use Keep for are not (generally) things that require long-term backup, though, so I can live with it. Keep isn't well-suited to long-term storage of a database of must-have facts. -- Cheers, Daniel.

Just sign into Google on the Windows desktop machine and browse to: https://keep.google.com/ The thing I like about Keep is I can access the notes from any device with downloadable apps for Android and iOS, and using a browser on Windows and Mac OS. Everything just synchronises seamlessly by itself.

Everything just synchronises seamlessly by itself. If you are a Gmail user here is just a simple alternative to Keep that may be useful. I've used it for several years now (before Keep was around). I simply keep my notes as *permanent* drafts in Gmail. They're easily edited. You can attach photos (and other items)as saved files. They're synced and can be accessed in any browser on any OS. Further they can be accessed in most any email client that Gmail will work with. (I use K-9 Mail.) They're easily copied to another document using copy/paste. And there are several formatting options.

It couldn't be any easier. Just open a web browser on your desktop computer and go to keep.google.com. As long as you login to the same google account on both the browser and your phone, everything is just there, synced automatically. Create or edit a note on any device and it immediately syncs to every other device. One of the best features of Keep is the ability to share notes. My Keep has a list I named "Groceries" and have shared with my wife's google account. Either of us can edit the list. In fact, we can even add items with voice commands, ala, "Okay, google. Add milk to my groceries list." When she later stops by the grocery store and pulls up the list on her phone, any items I added are automatically there on the list.

Either of us can edit the list. Though the wife and I have separate Gmail accounts they can both be on one device and either edited. So your grocery list thing should work, however Keep would probably be better for this application. (I do share her Google Calendar using the above method so that I know what my plans are for the coming week.) In fact, we can even add items > with voice commands, ala, "Okay, google. Yep, I can talk to my devices too. Problem is (like the wife) they seldom understand me. So I end up bringing up the keyboard for corrections. Progress? YMMV.

I want to know if it can be "here" as well, on my computer, accessible when I have no Internet access (such as when I'm travelling with my laptop). Evernote used to be so accessible, and still is to a limited extent. > >One of the best features of Keep is the ability to share notes. Somebody mentioned just saving a grocery list email draft...
OK, I'm saving a 'grocery list' draft with my computer using
Thunderbird. It's not showing up at the gmail website and I can't see
it with my phone. Does it have to be written at the website?
All my sent mail (written with TB) gets saved at the gmail site
automatically -- which I kind of don't like. Why not drafts?

Junk mail envelopes are a good Luddly grocery list medium. She probably
already knows about that.
