#33612 — Nexus 7 not going to receive Nougat update.

FromTimreason <timreason@hotmail.co.uk>

SubjectNexus 7 not going to receive Nougat update.
Message-ID<npjjvc$opm$1@dont-email.me>
It seems that various devices, including the Nexus 7 (2013) Asus tablet
will not get an upgrade to Nougat.

I read elsewhere that Google wants to maximise uptake of the new software.

Contradictory? I think so. If they're so keen, why not offer the upgrade
to Google Nexus devices that are only 3 years old and still one of the
best 7" tablets?

There seems to be no new 7" tablet from them, so even upgrading by
buying a new device seems to require buying either a 5" tiddler
'phablet' or an enormous 9" one. I like the 7" tablet as it's small
enough for a jacket pocket, and big enough to enjoy using.

Any other way of getting Nougat for a Nexus 7? Perhaps Asus might offer it?

Tim.

My Nexus 10 is the same age, and I haven't even been offered Android 6 -
so there seems little hope of getting 7. It would really benefit from
dual windows, too - much more so than devices with smaller screens.

Why are people so concerned about an OS update? I have half a dozen
Android devices running version 4.n up to 5.n, they run fine why would I
want to "upgrade" the OS? One of the version doesn't show the Combine
Inbox view in the email widget which is a pain, who knows what else might
be removed from later versions?

Security fixes at the very least.

security patches, new features and some apps require more recent
versions.

Many people like OS updates because they get new features. One in 6 that
I like is the ability to deny apps permissions. With older versions I
have passed some apps up because I thought they were too nosy. Now I can
get them and deny them the permissions I dislike.

And YMMV of course.

I'm in the same boat. I am happy with Marshmellow, but would like to see
hou Nougat looks. I am keeping my eye on Cyanogenmod, to see when they
incorperate Android Nougat AOSP into their product. I figure that should
get most of the new stuff, plus some of the Cyanogenmod original apps as
well.

As for Asus, they are not a software company, and are not set up to do an
Android distribution that will upgrade like Google's does. And even if they
do do a good version of Nougat, more than likely one would have to wipe and
install just like with all the other third party ROMS.

I'm still doing OK with my 2012 Nexus 7 and hoping there will be a Nexus
7 tablet on the market when it finally pegs out. It's stuck on Android
5.1.1 and I can understand that there are hardware limitations that make
more recent Androids incompatible with it.

I don't know why Google seem to have taken against the 7" size of
tablet. Nor why everyone seems to have taken against the 3" smartphone.

because they have a very good idea of what sizes are the most popular.

I'm surprised if the 7" tablet isn't popular. I don't see much point in
going smaller, since then I might as well use my phone. Going larger
means you need to carry a bag of some sort.

I notice also that the Nexus 7 (2013) is still available brand new. So
some people will be buying a new tablet that will never get updates.

Tim.

why carry both? if you have a 5-6" phone, do you really need a 7"
tablet?

the phone is just a little bit smaller and far more portable.

if you have a smaller phone, then a 5-6" phone can replace the phone
and tablet, eliminating the need to carry both.

the fact that a 3 year old tablet is even still available new indicates
it did't sell very well. there's a bunch sitting on shelves.

The tablet is SO much better for reading ebooks, for example.

there are always tradeoffs.

the point is that if someone has a 5-6" phone (and many people do),
they're probably not that interested in *also* getting a 7" tablet.

I have a Nexus 6 and an OnePlusOne. :-) And 2 Nexus 7s and an 8" Gallaxy
Tab 2. :-)

That does seem to be reflected in the apparent lack of popularity of the
7" tablets. I looked at the costs, and found that the 6" version of the
current Nexus is actually less than 6" and costs very significantly more
than the (not much smaller) 5" phone. I already have a 4" Samsung
Android phone and that comes with a contract which allows phone
upgrades. But I don't think I'd want my phone to be bigger just for the
sake of a little larger (but still small) display screen.

It is fair comment that I might as well not carry around the phone AND a
tablet. I was thinking more of having a screen large enough for reading,
and watching films, yet still small enough for a jacket pocket.

At home I usually use a laptop, and might use the tablet if I want to
move around. A larger tablet would be OK for that, but not so convenient
when I travel, or to use as a camera. For me the 7" ones seem to be an
ideal compromise, but I accept I must be in a minority.

Tim.

Less of a minority than you may think, both historically and currently.
BlackBerry's ill-fated PlayBook tablet was a 7" device, as is the latest
Amazon Fire Tablet (7", 5th Generation). And so is/was the Medion LifeTab
that the Aldi grocery chain was selling off towards Christmas a year ago,
not to mention the Samsung and LG and Apple devices of similar sizes.

I have a 7" 'phone, a Lenovo Phab Plus. Originally only sold in China but
some enterprising soul has imported them to the UK.

I am delighted with it, I have size 11 feet and hands to match so I have
no problems using it one handed and I don't need a tablet as well,
although I have loads!

Looks like the Phab 2 will be released worldwide but it's more than twice
he price.
