I'm after a DLNA client (for audio only) that will play tracks in
track number order rather than either randomly or in alphabetical
order. Is there such a thing?

DLNA sucks imo, has always.
I much prefer smb or ftp.
VLC can open a network drive in either protocol and let you play music
and video in about any order you fancy.

OK, thanks, however my network drives are NFS and I don't want to go
to the bother of Samba really. ... I wonder if VLC can do NFS.

There is however one major flaw in using VLC on Android - it can
*only* play local media files. Unlike VLC on other platforms it can't
play any sort of networked media file.

Well, after a bit more looking maybe VLC *can* stream from an NFS
share. However how to make it do it is another matter altogether.

I have NFS shares that work across the rest of my LAN but I really
can't get them to work to VLC on Android. It just keeps saying
'directory is empty' when it isn't (not when mounted on other
clients).

Are you sure about that!? The Google play page [1] specifically says
"It also support disk shares.".

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc>

It looks like you have an old version, because the VideoLAN website
says:

"VLC for Android 2.0.0
 2016-06-21

VideoLAN and the VLC development team are happy to publish version 2.0
 of VLC for Android today
It supports network shares browsing and playback,... "

OR, do you possibly have "VLC for Android BETA" (emphasis mine),
instead of "VLC for Android"!?

  This is the right one:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc>

  This is the wrong one:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon>

Note: On the apps pages, they're both called "VLC", but if you look in
the "My apps & games" list in the Play Store on your device, you'll see
"VLC for Android beta" for the wrong one. (Also the Settings -> ... APPS
(or something similar) entry - i.e. the one where you can Uninstall the
app, also just says "VLC" (but gives a 0.<something> version number).)

FYI, I had the wrong/beta one (didn't use it), uninstalled it and
installed the right one. That one plays music just fine from the DLNA
server on my NAS, It can play tracks in track number order, because my
DNLA server can present such a view. I.e. (AFAIK) the function you're
asking for, is a function of the DLNA *server*, not of the DLNA
*player/client*.

So it does not only support network shares, but also DLNA servers!

When I tap 'Local Network' (in the left pane), my NAS is listed
*twice*, once with an 'smb' folder icon, i.e. a network share, and once
with another icon (in my case white "WD" (Western Digital) on a blue
background), which is the DLNA server.

Anyway, back to your OP: Have you searched Google Play on - for
example - 'DLNA'? Such a search comes up with many apps, including some
with clear names like "DNLA Player". One of the latter ones is marked
with a "New" tag:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ginkgosoft.dlna.ctrl>

  Another one:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.toxsl.dlnaplayer>

You're right, I was *reading* about the old version though I've
actually installed VLC 2.0.6 which does support network shares.

... but do NFS shares work?

I get the SMB shares and DLNA server icons but no NFS shares and I
definitely do have NFS shares used by other clients on my system.

By the way how do you get back to the 'left pane' in VLC. When I
first installed it I went to local media and couldn't get out! I had
to uninstall and reinstall to see the Local Networks pane again.

I don't know, but I don't think so. But why do you ask? I thought that
you were looking for a DLNA-capable music player and VLC is that.

Anyway, NFS is dead technology and has been broken since its inception
(say I, a person with 3++ decades of UNIX experience).

I tried VLC on a (10.1") tablet, so perhaps it's different on a tiny
phone, but when I'm in a local folder - for example Internal memory >
Samsung > Music - there is a 'hamburger' (three horizontal (white)
lines) icon in the upper-left and when I tap that, I get the pane which
- amongst others - has 'Local Network'.

Well I have at least the same experience and for me NFS is far from
dead. Many NAS servers offer it nowadays and it's my system of choice
for drive sharing. It's *much* easier to configure than Samba/SMB.

I did originally ask for DLNA compatible because I thought it was the
only show in town really but file sharing really makes much more sense
in my situation (a home LAN).

Yes, it just happens to be broken on the tablet I installed it on.
Everything else works but the hamburger icon does nothing. I've
installed it on a different Android device and the hamburger works as
it should.

That (the latter) is probably true for a UNIX/Linux system, but not
for other/most systems. For me, the broken-by-(non-)design aspect of NFS
is the real killer. But my opinion is not what matters here, yours is.

A point of warning there: When I use VLC in SMB mode (instead of DLNA
mode), the tracks in a folder (directory :-)) *are* (alphabetically)
sorted, i.e. *not* what you want. That's rather stupid, because the file
names of the tracks are '01 <title>.mp3', '02 <title>.mp3', etc., so an
alpha*numeric* sort would work just fine.

Well that's not what I'm seeing in VLC for Android. I've resigned
myself to using SMB networking and have added my music directory on
the server to the SMB sharing. The tracks show up in alphabetical
order of file name in VLC on Android which, with the track number as
the start of the filename works OK.

So I have what I want basically. :-) (except for a few directories
where the file name wasn't started with the track number but I can fix
that)

By the way in VLC on Linux (and maybe on Windows, not sure) you can
select the sort order of tracks in a directory by right clicking on
the window showing the list of tracks. It took me a while to find
this when I first ran VLC on my Linux systems.

You're right, I'm seeing that as well. It was an error on my part.
Apparently I tried the 'By Folder' mode of the DLNA server, instead of
the SMB server. If I use the SMB server, I see the - desired - behaviour
you described.

Thanks. If I need/want to use the Windows version, I'll have a look at
it.

FWIW, after trying several other programs, I use MusicBee (on Windows)
as my music manager/player, but in this thread also I learned about the
SMB/DLNA capabilities of (the Android version of) VLC, so maybe I'll
have another look at VLC.

  (AFAIC,) EOT.
