#33307 — Warning about ES File Explorer Cleaner blowing away APK files

SubjectWarning about ES File Explorer Cleaner blowing away APK files
Message-ID<nokqlu$1pud$1@gioia.aioe.org>
I lost all my stored APK files from my last two years due to this mistake
on my part.

Of course, it's *my* mistake.
I pressed the buttons.
Yet, I lost everything.

So I just want to warn you not to make the same mistake.

But, if you ever use ES File Explorer's "Cleaner", it pops up for only a
split second "what" it's going to clean, and then comes up with a
file-by-file menu that is completely confusing to me.

It's so confusing that it's hard to even describe, but it's so dangerous to
use, that I would *not* recommend *ever* using the GUI because one slight
mistake, and *all* your files are wiped out.

In my case, it wiped out all my stored APKs (hundreds of them) in one fell
swoop, without even a second chance.

The GUI does not seem to have the option of just deleting selected files,
which is strange (because that's what I had tried - but it wiped out
everything nonetheless).

Basically, my recommendation is either go over the GUI with a fine-toothed
comb, or, simply avoid it altogether.

The specific mistake, in this case, was the term:
 "Obsolete APKs"

The way I thought about it, none of my APKs were "obsolete", although I had
hundreds of APKs saved on the flash card, one for every version of app that
was ever installed (even though many were not currently installed).

Well, for whatever reason, even though these APKs were on the flash card in
/mnt/extSdCard/data/software/apk/*.apk
ES File Explore must have found them and considered them *all* obsolete,
even though something like half of them were just recently used to install
the apps on the recently wiped system.

I don't know *what* criteria ES File Explorer uses for "obsolete".

The only think I know is that all the APKs were wiped out.
Not only the ones that were installed.
But even the ones that were not installed.

You would think that ES File Explorer would look for APKs wherever the
Android system stores "obsolete" APKs and not in a clearly user-defined
area!

Anyway, be forewarned about APKs in the ES File Explorer "Cleaner" tool.

Sure, it's my fault for even using the thing.
And it's my fault for not recognizing that, to ES File Explorer, "Obsolete
APKs" means *all* APKs on the entire system, no matter *where* they are.

That's not "obsolete" in my book.
That's *all APKs* no matter whether the apps are installed or not.

Anyway, lesson learned.
I realize this sounds like sour grapes, and, in a way, it is.
But, still - I wouldn't want YOU to go through this.

Thanks for explaining.

That means that *any* APK is an "obsolete" APK to ES File Explorer.

That lines up with what happened, since *all* APKs on the device were
obliterated.

lesson learned.

Was the "Obsolete" there an adjective, as you may have thought? or a verb?
If a verb, did clicking whatever you clicked just *obsolete* your APKs?
(and, once having obsoleted them, also deleted them subsequently, as
superfluous, because now obsolete?)

Stands a fair chance of explaining why, I fear. Cheers, -- tlvp

Dunno. They just called them "obsolete APKs".

In practice, that means any APK anywhere on the device, including on the
external sd card.

I lost hundreds of APKs. Too bad because many were the old versions, which
I usually vastly prefer over the new versions. Sigh. Mea culpa.

Your bigger mistake was keeping all your apk backup files on that one
device. Keeping several backups on several devices is safer. I even go
so far as to keep my apk backup files on my Google Drive... 8-O

CCleaner has a similar 'feature'. For those without external backup,
it's quite willing to delete the APKs in the local backup! :-( For some
reason, all my APKs have an .pka extension! :-) (And of course I *do*
have external backup.)

There are several ways to do the backups. I use an app called Astro
(an old version, can't vouch for the newer ones) to back up all the
apps in the device. They are backed up as apks and are stored in
backups/apps. From there I just transfer them to my various other
devices for backup and use.

I found that in many cases I prefer using the old apps as they often
run faster and have less or no ads. Of course they sometimes no
longer work correctly with an OS upgrade. In any case I always save
the old apps as you never know when you might need one (as in my
recent 12 buck smartphone find on the Target clearance rack).

I use App Backup & Restore, v3.2.0, which automatically backs up to any
given directory the moment an app is installed, whether by Fdroid or by any
other method.

There are so many app backup & restore apps, that the actual URL must be
mentioned so that others know which one I'm talking about:

Yikes. I can't find it anymore.

I *think* it's this "Apex Apps" one, but mine has nothing to do with
"contacts" so maybe they yanked the original???

I am with you totally in that the *older* apps are generally the *better*
ones, with respect to simplicity and lack of annoyances.

In fact, I can't even *find* the original mobi.infolife.appbackup app
versiopn 3.2.0(53) on the Google Play store anymore!

In fact, that new app is *dangerous*, as this is what it says on the web
page!

"Please take the SD card out before uninstall our app or all backups will
be deleted due to system restrictions".

So, wow. This is a definite case where the new app is far worse than the
old app!

I'll be certain to NOT UPDATE that app!

Thank you for volunteering that the Windows Crap Cleaner has made it to
Android!

While I've used Ccleaner since before they fixed the name, I had not known
it was available on Android!

I don't have a Google Play account - and Ccleaner is not on F-Droid.

Do you think the download is different whether it comes from the web site
or from Google Play?

I don't understand what you mean. The buttons on the Piriform website
are just links to the Google play page.

If you don't want to use Google play, you should collect the URLs of
alternative download sites. F-Droid is just one, but - as I said before
- there are many others.

  FWIW, CCleaner is on apkpure.com.

Yup. I do agree that my bigger mistake was in not having a second backup
*off* the phone.

Those APKs lasted for years on the sdcard.

Sigh. One mistake, and ... poof!

Lesson learned!
Don't ever use ES File Explorer's cleaner.

Wrong lesson, imo. I installed ES File Explorer years ago then deleted
it before even completing the installation, just based on the
unnecessary privileges it demanded. That aside, your error was not
which file-manager you used, it was not having the sdcard backed up;
there will always be some crap app that does something stupid like this,
if you're lucky and the OS doesn't get you first, and as you should have
known just from having been around for a long time, backups that aren't
backed up are vulnerable.

So pick the punch-cards up, run them through the card-sorter, and away
you go, eh? Admitting to having made an error is laudable, but doing it
in a group you appear to have declared war against is kind of...
ineffectual, maybe?

Or maybe you're just talking with friends and lots of them don't know
that, go figure.

Now with Android 6.0 Marshmallow you can deny privileges to apps. It's
at settings/apps/the app/permissions. So when you eventually upgrade
give ES a try. I've used it in the past and had no complaints.

FWIW I currently use the browser xScope Pro (paid version) for my file
handling. It sees down to Root and handles cards nicely too. My favorite
free file handler is Ol File Manager. But the version I use is several
years old and I don't know how well the present one does.

I am stuck on 4.3 because it's a T-Mobile S3.
So I'll never be on 6.0 on this phone.

One question: Do you deny the app privileges in Marshmallow *before* it's
installed - or only after?

I ask because I use App Ops Starter freeware which can deny privileges only
*after* the app is installed. So if there is any phoning home during
installation, it's too late.

Can you deny *before* or *during* the installation?

One thing I *can'T* seem to do with ES File Explorer on an unrooted S3 is
put the user.js file into the Mozilla profiles directory.
/data/data/org.mozilla.firefox/gibberish.default/user.js

Can you do that with your professional file manager on an unrooted device?

Probably no phoning home until the app is run, and you can deny
permissions before it is run. However I've never seen a permission
for phoning home. Only stuff like contacts, camera, ect.

No.

There's nothing in my root/data folder. Perhaps because I don't use
Firefox. However my xScope Pro browser/file manager has no magical
powers and would be denied access to protected areas like any other
app on an unrooted device.

On most Android versions, certainly on mine, which is not rooted, App Ops
Starter freeware will allow you to *change* the permissions of anything,
after the fact.

So, for example, if ES File Explorer wants access to, oh, say, contacts,
you can just turn that on and off at will.

Yes. I do realize this.
It was my fault for not backing the sd card to somewhere *off* the phone!
In two or three years, I never had this problem.
But, of course, it happened. So, I should have backed it up.
My fault.

I don't have a war with anyone.

The smart ones, anyway (which is most of them).

I don't have a war with apple either.
I love my iOS iPads.
The kids love 'em too.

The only thing is that I can't do as much on iOS as I can on Android simply
because iOS is a more primitive operating system that disallows a *lot* of
things that Android allows.

So, I have to "just give up" on iOS.

That's normal for iOS users to "just give up" all the time, every day, all
day.

But I'm not used to it; that's all.
