Here's an equivalent if you only need USB and not lightning connectors:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820283018

Basically it's a USB-stick with a removable sdcard instead of fixed
internal storage. iThings can write to it too, if my aging memory
hasn't screwed up.

The only Android that I use regularly is an RCA cheapo tablet/keyboard
combo, and it has a fullsize USB connector. IMO every Android owner
should have one of these in his kit to connect USB devices to microusb:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0PG19N6347

Whatever, we all develop our own toolkits to deal with these annoying
situations, some of us like to have for-real backups we can use on
whatever-system we find ourselves stuck with, some are satisfied with
cloud backups, it's a mixed deal.

Both gave me "Sorry, We can't find this Item. Please check your

There are also USB/microUSB-based memory-sticks, so if you want a
device just for transferring data, then that is even simpler than a
card reader/writer.

If you prefer a USB stick with inboard memory of fixed size, that is
maybe lesser quality than say a 128Gb microSD card x10, that's something
for you to decide. I prefer being able to store one reader and dozens
and dozens of sdcards in the same physical space as two USB sticks. I
like having an sdcard in my wallet that contains a bootable version of
several linux distros plus all the data on all my systems. My wife
doesn't care as long as it goes when she steps on the gas. You know
what they say about mileage.

The thing that really gripes my ass is that all these vendors,
Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Whoever... they all want to maximize profit
and they do that by catering to the most massive market, which is the
worst possible situation for those of us what don't want the same things
as the teenagers on our block. We get stuck with it anyway because it's
all that is available for purchase. I've thought from time to time how
much money I could be rolling in if I set up a company that sold people
what they want, instead of what the company thought this week's
ninja-turtles pokemon-gotahell crowd wants, but I haven't, and won't,
because I've had a business and dealing with the beans is flatly more of
a pain in the ass than it's worth to me.

if that would be a profitable venture, someone would have done it.

I prefer the "minimalist" approach, and carry one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Generation-Micro-SD-Reader/dp/B0028R3NCU

complete with a 64GB uSD card.

It can be used just like any thumb drive.
And the uSD card can be removed and inserted into my phone to transfer files when the only transfer option is USB.

I recently set foot inside the Apple ecosystem for the first time.

Since my "real computers" (lol) all run linux, and I since have no
desire to distract myself with the inevitable learning-curve associated
with any new OS (and thus prefer to avoid buying a Mac until it's
actually necessary), I've done some research into methods of file
transfer between iOS products (iPad and iPhone) and linux/android. Of
course for Android/Android or Android/linux file transfers, bluetooth
send/receive is the obvious choice for convenient file transfer since
it's available and easy.

Note that I vastly prefer solutions that do *not* require the internet,
since my only network connection is through Verizon cellular and the
nearest tower is distant enough that weather conditions significantly
affect connectivity.

Basically the methods I've found that are convenient enough to mess with
are:

* email: this of course costs two data transmissions across the network,
one to send the file and another to retrieve it, but it's stupid-simple
and always-available if you can send/receive emails with attachments.

* some cloud service like dropbox, google-drive, etc: this likewise
costs two data transmissions across the network, one to send the file
and another to retrieve it.

* a local wifi file-sharing device (no internet access required), the
one I chose is the Kingston MobileLite G3,
http://www.kingston.com/us/wireless/wireless_readers/mlwg3 This device
has an associated app, for Apple devices it's
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mobilelite-wireless/id1053288883?mt=8
and for Android devices the associated app is
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kingston.mlwg3&hl=en
Be sure to note that there are old and new versions of the app, the one
for the G3 is the one with the red logo. I haven't downloaded the
Android version of the app but my expectation is that would be almost
identical to the iOS version.

* there are devices available that have a fullsize USB male connector on
one end, a lightning male connector on the other end, and an sdcard in
the middle. The one I chose is this one,
https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-iFlash-Reader-Android-iPhone/dp/B017QS7BQ4
and there is an associated iOS app available for this one,
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/idiskk-pro/id1006564880?mt=8
no app is needed on the Android side, you just connect its USB end to
the Android device. If your android device needs a micro-USB connector
you need an adapter such as,
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0081CRXGI/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687662&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0023FTRUO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=9X3DVCF9F7VHRDDJVSA8

Beyond that I wish you luck, Apple continues to lay on the floor kicking
its feet because it was there first and by damn the world can come to
them and buy Everything Apple. Personally I find their devices of
superior hardware quality and adequate software quality, and although
I've moved my "personal business" (email, shopping, the crap I don't
really care about) to iPad and iPhone (because iOS really does seem to
make good use of Apple's builtin encryption and graphics hardware),
development is staying on linux because Apple has kind of a "Hotel
California" feel to it and I prefer to stand in the doorway ready to run
if necessary.

BTW, Aardvarks and nospam should both kiss my ass, fwiw. <g>

You're not a native speaker of English, I take it, to judge by your use
here of "Afficianados" (spelling), "extoll" ("The spelling extoll [for
extol] is accepted, but is quickly becoming obsolete"), and "it's" (that's
the contraction of "it is", not the required possessive form "its").

You almost had me fooled while you were tutoring poor Frank Slootweg.

Did he tutor me? I must have missed that.

I'm filtering "Aardvarks"... oops I mean "Paul M. Cook"... oops I mean
"VPN User"... oops I mean "Joe Clock"... oops I mean "Marob Katon" ...
oops I mean "Chris Rangoon"... oops I mean "Henry Jones", but do an
upscore of responses to my posts, so I should have seen his tutoring.

Or are you confusing me with Michael Eyd, whom he *did* 'tutor' (while
emptying several magazines into his own feet)?

We do, don't we :-) ? But what's a "sluice-way" doing in Austria? I thought
sluice-ways were entrenched in Polderland :-) . My mistake again, I guess.

No, no mistake. I was is Austria, doing a bit of hiking in the
mountains, and it was my last evening there, hence me "Signing off from
Austria.".

And indeed I live in - and am a native from - Polderland. But I live
on the 7th floor, because I don't trust them dikes (of *either*
variety) [1]. Last time we needed a little boy to stop the floods, go
figure!

[1] I lived some 40 years at some 5 meters below sea level, so I *do*
sort of trust them dikes.

Everybody remembers "little boy" but does anybody know his actual NAME?

So Dutch is your native language? Two things I know about Dutch
(Polderische? Hollandaise?):

1. When I watched Soldier of Orange I was amazed that Dutch sounded
like English, but with different words. The pronunciation of letters,
the accent, the 'music' of the language seemed the same.

2. The other person editing a proposal (back in the 80s) was a Dutch
woman. She was better than me at catching odd grammatical constructions
that I would have let pass. And she was a lot younger than me, too. I
still find that humiliating, but we all need a dose of humiliation now
and then and that's mine.

  Yep, but Dutch isn't a language, it's a throat disease [1].

Apparently "throat disease" is an honor that Dutch is vying with Danish for
-- many's the Dane who's told me that *Danish* is a throat disease.

Oh, heck, maybe you're *both* right :-) . Certainly the Dutch rendering of
"tram to Scheveningen", out of the mouth of a Nederlander, sounds like an
attack of pharyngitic throat-clearing :-) . (No offense intended.)

Well, who would argue about that? :-)

The 'sch...' sound was used in WWII to out Germans who were pretending
to be Dutch. It was impossible for them to get it right.

Yes, I love that story every time I hear it :-) ! It's as good as the
assorted "code-talkers" the Allied forces used for wide-open secret
communications ... Navajo Indians telling it straight up, but in Navajo,
and little old Swiss village women telling it straight up too, but in their
own particular dialect within the Schwyzertütsch family, both encodings
utter gibberish to anyone from elsewhere in the outside world :-) !

In "... tram naar Scheveningen ... " it's the r, the r, the Sch, and the g
-- they get me every time, all of 'em, trying to rip out my throat !
