because imap does everything pop can do and a whole lot more.

imap is designed for multiple systems. pop was not.

pop is obsolete.

BUT (at least with gmail) if it's been read once you can't download it
to another device UNLESS you disable POP and then enable it again. You
will then download ALL the mail still on the server. A monumental
nuisance.

If I'm going away for a few days I try to remember to delete all the
mail on the gmail server. Then I can get mail on the phone and still
put it on my computer using the above procedure. Sometimes I've
forgotten to delete all the mail, which doth cause me to rend my garment :-(

It would be nice if accounts could be converted from POP to IMAP, but
apparently they can't.

the nuisance is that you keep trying to use pop.

set it to imap and your problems go away.

of course it can.

pop and imap is how the mail is accessed. the account remains the same.

you're very confused.

Then why do you keep doing it that way?

As has been mentioned several times in this thread, accounts themselves
are not dependent on the protocol/method used to access the mailbox.
The concept of "converting an account from POP to IMAP" makes no sense.
It doesn't work that way. You seem to be laboring under several
misconceptions.

Only as much as will enable me to do what I want. How is this different
from anyone else? If I hit a wall I either devise a workaround or
decide that the grapes were sour anyway. I am, unfortunately,
intellectually lazy. Fortunately I'm smart enough to get by anyway.

When I opened my first google mail accounts it was necessary to make a
choice between POP and IMAP. I chose POP because I had no need for
multiple-device access and that's what I'd used with my previous ISPs
because that's all that was available. At one point I was interested in
converting the accounts and, according to what I read in the gmail
'help' information, I couldn't do that.

Are you telling me that I can convert gmail accounts from POP to IMAP now?

i don't know what you supposedly read but it did not say what you claim
it did.

there is no conversion. you just enable imap. done.

then configure your mail app to use imap rather than pop.

> Are you telling me that I can convert gmail accounts from POP to IMAP now?

again, there is no conversion.

you can even use *both* pop and imap. for instance, use pop from your
desktop and imap from your phone. it's not a good idea and a bitch to
manage, but it's possible.

You misinterpreted Google's help. It's always been the same ever since
they offered IMAP access. It's a feature you can turn on or not. There
has never been any "conversion".

> Are you telling me that I can convert gmail accounts from POP to
> IMAP now?

No. You can turn on the switch on Google to allow access to your
mailbox via POP or IMAP or both. Nothing is "converted". Nigel Wade
provided a link with concise and accurate instructions on how to turn
those features on.

I suspect the issue here is not so much what Google does or lets you do
as what your mail client does/clients do.

The Google mail servers will let you use either POP or IMAP, and
whichever you use you access the same database of messages. Google is
(as you've noticed) a bit unusual in that it has a notion of which
messages on the server have previously been read, and doesn't show
those messages to a POP client (unless you disable POP and re-enable it
again).

Your mail client, though, may well store the messages it downloads in a
different way depending on whether it used POP or IMAP to talk to the
server. POP has no notion of mail subfolders, for example, so the
client may well use a flat database for POP servers and a
folder-structured one for IMAP. This would make it non-trivial to
switch from POP to IMAP, and quite hard to convert from IMAP to POP --
what do you do with all those folders that no longer have any meaning,
for example?

That's why changing from POP to IMAP collection (or vice versa) on the
same server may require that delete the service from your mail client
and create a new one using the other protocol.

 Daniel.

I enabled both POP and IMAP on a couple of gmail accounts. I can then
read email on my phone via IMAP and then save it to my computer via POP.
I set Thunderbird (computer) to leave mail on the server for 5 days
unless I delete it, so unless I leave home for more than 5 days (in
which case I can change it to10 days or whatever) I can eat my cake and
save it too!

I'm leaving the POP accounts on my computer just the way they are. My
structure isn't all that tree-like, just a lot of separate "folders" for
storing mail.

Just adding IMAP capability at the gmail site seems to have done the trick.

The process is pretty straightforward.

Google "gmail imap". Follow the links to this page:

Those were for opening an account, not converting an existing one
without loss. I hunted around for a while just in case you had posted

Thanks anyway.
