I saw something once about putting an antivirus on the phone.

Do you all have that?

I wasn't concerned until I got a wireless update yesterday. It said
it was going to power off the phone and enter into the Recovery Mmode.
Sounded like something a virus would do. And I'm still in the
process of getting rid of malware I made the mistake of installing on
my PC 5 days ago. I haven't installed the wireless update yet.

It was named Blu_D770.... the same as my model phone (D770 is one
or the most common kind of Studio X Plus), so that was reassuring, but
not quite enough.

I googled and there were questions about updating wireless, some that
said pieces of their data like the call list were destroyed, though I
don't have a call list worth noticing. But not for my model of Blu.
I was hoping to find some announcement that a new one was out, so I'd
think it was legitimate.

I have avast! Antivirus & Security installed. At first, this version was
crippled, but avast! decided to offer the full version. I don't know
what it's called in English, but it also has a tool that enables you to
lock (with a PIN code) certain apps. I find that handy to lock Settings,
Google Play, my netbanking app, ...

DON'T install their Battery Saver, Cleanup etc. (imho) you don't need
those.

I have Bitdefender free edition. Whilst being one of the best couple of
products at stopping viruses, Bitdefender has minimal effect on phone
speed and battery life - in fact I can't see any such adverse effects at
all. All the other features offered by more elaborate "total security"
products are available via Google anyway, so it's only the antivirus
action that's needed.

Assumption - an error of which you are as yet unaware.

I can say the same thing about avast! Antivirus & Security. I just
checked the battery usage and avast! is nowhere to be seen.

Has your antivirus programs ever detected any malware?

Under Android, no. Under Windows, can't even remember. Maybe a long,
long time ago. I often wonder why I still have it installed, but then
again, better to be safe than sorry /and/ my bank advises (no
obligation) using it when netbanking.

I've detected about 30 or 40 instances of malware, in attachments to
spam email; in 3 or 4 files I've downloaded.

NOthing on the phone yet. How WOULD I get a virus on the phone?

Some people say it happens when you install pirated apps on your
phone. Poetic justice :)

It would be poetic justice. I have no desire to install more apps
than I aboslutely need. In fact I have too many already, except I want
a UPC and QR code reader. But don't know which one.

I'm not going to play games, not even solitaire. When I'm out, there
are loads of things to do, and when I'm home, there are loads of other
things to do.

Maybe do some reading on the Stagefright vulnerability. Most Android
phones (my Nexus 5X not included :-) are vulnerable to it. I just picked
one of the hits that I got and found an article dated July, 29 2015:

<http://www.securitycurrent.com/en/writers/mark-rasch/stagefright-and-security-fright>

<quote>

A weaponized version of Stagefright could then launch malware onto the
phone and, well, do just about anything, because that’s what malware
does. It could capture most email (not sure if it could jump into a
virtualized session like Good or other apps, but it might be able to do
screen captures), could take over the microphone and camera, transmit
GPS or other data, and otherwise be a big mess.

It’s exactly the kind of vulnerability that hackers are looking for.
Easy to execute, ubiquitous, undiscovered and gives the hacker total
control.

I have BitDefender on a couple of Windows10 machines and just installed
the paid version on y phone -- but I haven't yet paid and am still in
Trial mode. What I've found so far that I don't like is (a) I can't set
a pattern to unlock apps instead of a PIN; and (b) I can't do a scan
without disabling my BlueLight filter app -- I had to disable it to
configure BitDefender also -- so whether it will actually run while I
have the BlueLight filter active, I don't know.

Maybe I'll go back to Qihoo 360 Security.

Sophos works and is non-intrusive...

Hard to say any anti virus program actually 'works' until you get a
virus and your AV takes care of it. They say it works but who knows?
