...NOT part of your cable service? I've been gloriously happy with Ooma for a couple of years. All the good phone stuff for less than $5/month after purchasing the device, which plugs into your router. I've got a code which gives a price of $90 (ends July 29 and I get a kickback too), but feel free to buy through other sources -- I'm not in it for the money!. Costco has it every once in a while. I'm just SOOO happy I was able to kick AT&T in the teeth that I want everybody else to be happy too! Carry on. -- Cheers, Bev ************************************************* Never argue with a woman holding a torque wrench.

I didn't like that setup, plus they would auto-update their software which defeated some of my tweaks. Now they have a dongle that plugs into the router: Ethernet to router, RJ-11 jack to phone, USB to A/C power adapter. Nothing installed on your computer. I've read where some folks will use MagicJack with their tablets so they can make calls using their tablet. However, as cheap as VOIP services are, you still have to pay for an Internet provider so remember to add [a portion of] that cost when deciding to leave the old POTS service.

My concern is that when we get a storm that knocks out cell service and therefore the Internet. The landline has stayed up during all such storms so we do not lose contact with the outside world.

Doesn't everybody already pay for an IP? Well, maybe not the homeless,
who probably don't have POTS anyway.

Our cable goes out every once in a while, as does the electricity. I
can use the cell to call to report it, but that's generally a waste of
time because they already know about the problem.

The telco is provided their own power on their twisted pair (POTS) lines, not your power company. So when you have a power outage for whatever reason, the telco still has their battery power but eventually that will deplete. I don't know what are the requirements for capacity regarding how long telcos must provide their own power. Many cable modems come with a built-in battery. It probably only keeps up the voice service (VOIP line) during a power outage since the battery is too small to keep the entire cable modem powered for very long. The internal battery is only good for 4-8 hours of standby time, and even less if you actually use the phone. I use a UPS on my cable modem so Internet and voice stay up during a power outage but it's a battery so it will eventually deplete. Having a landline used to make sense as a backup in case of a power outage (that didn't last longer than the telco's battery capacity). You would still have a usuable phone during a power outage. Nowadays most computer users have mobile phones; i.e., if you have a computer then there is a good chance you also have a cell phone. Cell towers have their own battery backup, just like the old POTS telcos. So cell phones continue working during a power outage. http://www.njslom.org/cell-towers-fcc-ruling.html Like a lot of blogs, the author was too lazy to bother adding a timestamp to his article. The gov't doc to which he refers is dated back in 2007. http://wirelessestimator.com/content/articles/?pagename=Cell%20Tower%20Backup%20Power Considering you can get cell phone service for pretty cheap (e.g., Tracfone) or even free if you quality (many, maybe all, cell phone providers carry Lifeline service although sometime under a different name), it seems unlikely that someone with a computer and a landline does not also have a cell phone. Well, if they have a cell phone then they can dump the landline (POTS) as a backup phone service in case of a power outage. Do you not have a cell phone? You don't even need a cell phone provider to use one to dial 911. You can get any cell phone (often found for just $5 during sales or at a thrift shop) and never bother to buy a cell phone service but you can still dial 911 for emergencies. I have one tossed in my car (an oldie Tracfone although I have no Tracfone service) just for 911 calls in case my own cell phone is dead or not with me. I keep around my old defunct cell phones (flip or bar phones) just to have them somewhere for 911 calls. All cell phone carriers (at least in the USA per FCC ruling) are required to provide 911 service whether you have a contract with them or not. https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/911-wireless-services "The FCC's basic 911 rules require wireless service providers to transmit all 911 calls to a PSAP, regardless of whether the caller subscribes to the provider's service or not." At $100 per year for about 1200 minutes at Tracfone (400 minute card, triple minutes cell phone, plus often you can get a bonus of more minutes), a cell phone costs only $8.33 per month. That is a hell of lot cheaper (in my area) for POTS service where they claim the cost is $17/month but with all the added taxes and charges the actual cost is $26/month. Plus I get to use the cell phone in more places than stuck to copper wires at one location (home). Of course, I don't use that many minutes so I always end up rolling them over. When I quit using Tracfone, I had rolled over around 4000 minutes which thankfully I was able to transfer to my aunt's account so they didn't just vaporize. If you cannot afford a cell phone and qualify under federal guidelines for low income status, you can get both a cell phone along with service (talk and text only, no data) for free or very cheap; see https://www.fcc.gov/general/lifeline-program-low-income-consumers. Look for a cell phone provider that includes Lifeline service. One is Assurance <something> that uses the Verizon network. Another is Safelink (operated by Tracfone). If all you want is emergency calls during a power outage, any cell phone will do that even without a service contract. Don't know where you (Alek) are to know if the Lifeline or 911 requirement are available in your area. Other countries will have differing emergency and financial programs available (or maybe not at all). If you have landline (POTS) phone service, you already have more than sufficient funds to replace it with cell phone service.

During Hurricane Sandy, cell phone towers went out and stayed out for I don't remember how long. POTS stayed up the entire time. Alek wrote: > I'm having a 12KW emergency generator installed this week. There is usually a delay between the power outage and when the fuel-powered generator kicks in, assuming automatic startup. You still might want a UPS on your computer, monitor, and cable/voice modem. If you use VOIP service, make sure you have a NON-cordless phone at home. The generator will probably be hooked into only the essential circuits of your home, like for fridge, furnace, etc and NOT for an electric range or microwave. 12KW isn't really that huge. Lots bigger than most home UPS units but appliances can suck up a lot of juice, especially if you leave live the air conditioner(s). They're great as long as you wire them to critical circuits. > During Hurricane Sandy, cell phone towers went out and stayed out for I > don't remember how long. POTS stayed up the entire time. It was because of Katrina (2005) that had BOTH outages for cell phones and POTS that the FCC made a ruling regarding capacity and that cell phone carriers must have backup battery power. Alas, not everyone complies with the demands of the FCC who is totally overwhelmed by political control. That POTS stayed up attests to not have the poles get blown over (unless you're in an area where the lines are buried). Doesn't take but a tornado in my area to cut off POTS because the poles got blown down or they got toppled or their lines had trees fall on them. A prior very wet week or two helps with soggy ground to make uprooting much easier. Hell, had to have the line replaced twice just from a squirrel chewing on the line. The third time they bypassed the old cable and ran a new one, so now I have two of them running to the house (and neither are used since I went VOIP via my ISP). For me, during power outages (about twice a year here, at least) and over several tornadoes taking out the POTS lines, the cell phones were still working.

We had a storm that blew the trees so that a tree fell on the big thick phone cable where it went through a section of woods. The force of tree falling on the cable pulled on the phone pole at boundary between the woods and a field and phone pole broke and fell over, and then the cable went under the water of the stream. that ran down the middle of the woods. Being a dutiful citizen, I called the phone company and reported it. When nothing happened, I called again 2 months later, and again about 2 months after that. I think I go some acknowledgement that I had called about 6 months after this started, but they didn't fix anything. But knowing they knew about it, I sat back and they finally fixed it 2 years later. Of course my phone worked fine the whole time, proving I guess that those cables really are waterproof. After the pole, the cable is buried for the last 150 yards to our houses. Except for little light green "pedestals" that stick up like mushrooms in a few places.

Some VOIP's(Vonage for one) ask for an alternate number such as a cell phone that can be used in the event of a power or other outage. I can't recall anytime that cell service has been out from a power outage, but if it's that bad, you don't need to use a phone because no one else will be ablr to receive your call in the area.

And be sure your ISP can deliver adequate data rates (no, the 600 Kbps
throughput that Frontier delivers for their nominal 6 Mbps service is *not*
an adequate data rate :-{ ). HTH.

Ken Blake wrote: > Google Voice. I believe it's still free. I use them because I give out a single phone number which can call ALL of my phones: 2 home VOIP numbers (1 full plan, 1 basic plan so no voicemail), 3 cell phone numbers, and work phone. I even transfered my 30-year old home phone number to them so everyone that knew that old number could still use it. In fact, without the presence of my cell phone to check, I can't even tell you what are my cell phone numbers. Two of the cell phone numbers don't have voicemail service but they get it via Google Voice. One number to call them all. I can even configure when a number is called, like no point in ringing my work phone during non-work hours and possibly having someone else pick up the call. And it's free (but the old number transfer cost $20). Plus I can get texts and/or e-mail alerts on my computer or smartphone when someone leaves voicemail. I can have different voicemail prompts for anonymous callers, callers within specific groups in my contacts list, and for all other callers in my contacts list. Plus I can blacklist (screen) out unwanted callers at the server. Great for screening out the spammers. Plus I can use their app on my smartphone to make calls via wifi that don't chew into my cell phone service's quota plus the same feature with my ISP's voice service using wifi with their app on my smartphone plus I get 60 minutes/month with Skype included in my Office subscription. I save a lot of minutes on my cell phone service's talk and text quotas (which luckily has non-expiring rollover) when within range of good-enough free wifi. At home, I use the wifi in my cable modem for my ISP's Internet service. You can use their smartphone app to make free phone calls via wifi. So, unlike what nospam claimed, you do not need a phone number (but who has a smartphone without a number assigned to it, anyway). That's to make phone calls. To receive phone calls obviously means Google Voice has to redirect a call to somewhere, so you do need a phone number to receive. Who doesn't have a phone number nowadays whether it be landline, VOIP, or cell phone? Even the very poor can probably get some phone service for free or very cheap. Everyone visiting here has a computer so they can get phone service, too; i.e., if they can afford a computer and Internet service, they can afford a phone and service or get them cheap or maybe even free. Yes, with Google Voice, you will need a phone number to receive calls (unless you just use their voicemail service for all incoming calls). You can call out for free without your own separate phone service.

But yes, I pay for a landline, mainly for the ADSL service I'm using to type this, but it also worjks for our Android phones when we're at home for the data part, though not for voice calls or SMS, Steve Hayes http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm http://khanya.wordpress.com
