And Michael suggests apps that can't possibly work. Did they ever test them before suggesting them? Never. That's because they're more interesting in *image* than in facts. It's the number 1 reason they bought the product line.

Do it the Linux Way™: <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10693411/implementing-the-airdrop-protocol> You won't find anything nearly as well designed or user friendly as AirDrop on Linux, but you may find some alternative solutions that are more clunky in nature. A quick web search found this rather quickly: <https://projectzme.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/osx-airdrop-functionality-in-linux/> <https://code.google.com/archive/p/giver/> It doesn't sound like it uses Bluetooth and WiFi to automatically establish a secure and fast ad-hoc P2P connection the way AirDrop does, but it's better than nothing - even if it isn't the real thing. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I'd probably agree, but there are some definite flaws and inadequacies in Apple's user-interface, many of which (but not all of which) are present on Android touch-interfaces as well. Maybe some of them will be fixed in iOS 10. I'm talking about basic gestures and user-interface consistency, fwiw. > In many ways, macOS is what Linux > wants to be if and when it grows up. I love the independence from Microsoft and Apple and Google that linux offers. I could go on about linux, but I already have and it's in the blog shown below, and it isn't all praise. In my view linux is not about great usability and certainly not about about great code; it's about freedom. Some of us value that, others not so much. I'm talking about a real AirDrop implementation that uses the same bluetooth/wifi connection protocols that Apple's AirDrop does. Otherwise what good is it? Linux supports a number of methods of linux-to-linux file transfer. It's Apple that has become the odd-man-out. Which is fine, if you don't mind being constrained to Apple. I don't like being constrained, period. This is an interesting situation. Most people won't think it interesting. They don't have to read it, they can skip away now. I bought the iPad to be a personal-business internet appliance that I could use to enter freehand drawings and write documentation, and aside from some user-interface clunkys as mentioned above, it does a fantastic job of that. It is entirely satisfactory in the way it performs the function I bought it to perform. Likewise I bought the iPhone for a specific set of reasons, primarily because the BlackBerry that was my previous phone was more of a pain than I cared to continue dealing with. I bought the iPhone to be a phone. The only Android phone I found that was really in the running was the OnePlus 3. I chose the iPhone because it is smaller and lighter and has a metal frame. It's a great little phone, and I'm quite satisfied with it. It would be nice if its fingerprint sensor was a little faster, but it's a whole bunch faster than the rigamarole I had to go through to unlock my BlackBerry. I also find iCloud and Handoff to be very useful, even though our network connectivity is sporadic. So it would seem that I'm a happy Apple customer, and that is in fact the case. Just yesterday I was trying to explain to my wife (who is using a linux laptop, and who never does backups because it's too much trouble) that for the things she does, browsing and email and a few odds and ends like using gimp for photo-editing, she would probably be much happier with an iPad and keyboard once she got adjusted to them. And I also explained that maybe it's time to give up her flip-phone and join the 21st century so we could share the horrific family calendar. But even though I like the Apple devices I have, I still want to keep backups on an ext2 or equivalent partition on a USB-attached storage device. Just in case it's necessary to move out of the Hotel California due to a massive earthquake or something. The user-interface issues really don't bother me much in the long run, I fully intend to replace most of those interactions with something that I prefer. Basically if local-offline-backups onto "industry standard" storage media was a little easier, I'd probably be ready to get baptized and join the Apple Church. Except I'm just not a joiner. Watch yourself if you go outside, at least if you're in the US, it's nuts out there and getting nuttier. -- http://totally-portable-software.blogspot.com [Sat Mar 26: "Documentation and Portability"]

I'm a red-blooded American of many generations, and I do understand what it means. Your use of the word "arsehole" makes me wonder whether you are American though. Anyhow, I don't see why he should "watch it" considering he was only telling the truth. >> In many ways, macOS is what Linux wants to be if and when it grows >> up. > > I can hardly comment on that since I have never used a Mac of any > kind. Well I've used all of the above platforms and then some for many years now, and my statement above is true. MacOS gives you all of the power of Unix and the ability to run most popular *nix software combined with a sleek user interface and industry support that isn't available to Linux. >> Love Linux all you want, > > I love the availability of the source code, the quality of which > decreases as one proceeds up the application stack from the kernel to > the userspace sttuff which contains a *lot* of outright crap imo. Why would you love that? Crappy software sucks, and there's *way* more crappy software on the Linux platform - particularly in the desktop computing area, than in macOS or even Windows. > In my view linux is not about great usability and certainly not about > about great code; it's about freedom. Some value that, others not so much. I find platforms that significantly increase my productivity to be far more valuable to me than some "everything must be free and open" ideal. I have shit to do, and I don't want my computing devices constantly making me work around their silly quirks. If you're as "American" as you wish to be thought, you'll know that dissing the other guy's team is grounds for a fat lip. It happens that linux is one of the teams that I play on. Spectators of low vigor might not understand. No drama. What was intended as camaraderie was taken by yourself (to whom it was not addressed) as some form of insult; back off on the paranoia-juice, maybe. And before your testosterone makes you out to be a fool, I agree that nospam was telling the truth about linux. In many respects it's a piece of junk, in comparison with perfection; so is iOS. So it goes, people won't tell you this but: it's *all* beta-level code but you won't realize that until the next release, and I'm not talking just-linux or just-apple. > >>> In many ways, macOS is what Linux wants to be if and when it grows >>> up. >> >> I can hardly comment on that since I have never used a Mac of any >> kind. > > Well I've used all of the above platforms and then some for many years > now, and my statement above is true. I also have no doubt that I would find MacOS no more adequate to my needs than I find linux. Thus I am resisting the urge to go buy a MacBook. At least until I have my current project completed to working-prototype stage on linux. Then, it becomes time to port, and I believe in doing the hard parts first, so iOS will probably be my first port candidate. At that time I worry about whether I need a MacBook to get my code signed. For now, I don't care to add further distraction, and learning any new system is always that. > and industry support that isn't available to Linux. I've been increasing my productivity since 1969 and it started out higher than average, but changing habits costs time, which results in decreased short-term productivity, and at my age I don't want to lose anything that doesn't require losing. > I have shit to do, and I don't want my computing devices constantly > making me work around their silly quirks. I don't like iOS constantly making me work around its silly quirks. One can choose to enter a quirkless society if he's naive enough to believe in such, or create his own implementation of quirks. I daydream too much already, I need more responsivity instead of less. When I moved from an Intel Atom N270 to an Intel Core i7, it reminded me that I've always been addicted to zero perceptible response time. It also reminded me of some other things, since my own code runs at nearly identical speeds on both systems. > >>> Do it the Linux Way™: >>> >>> <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10693411/implementing-the-airdrop-protocol> >>> >> I'm talking about a real AirDrop implementation that uses the same >> bluetooth/wifi connection protocols that Apple's AirDrop does. >> Otherwise what good is it? > > That's what the above URL is all about. You use linux and Android and iOS and MacOS more or less equally these days, do you? How interesting. How do you work around the file-transfer issues between for example, iOS and Android? For > now, I don't care to add further distraction, and learning any new > system is always that. what exactly are your needs? what type of project? you don't have to reveal specifics, but a general idea would help to know how well a mac would work, if at all, and what obstacles you might encounter porting to other platforms. and if you do plan on porting, you should be thinking about the various platforms sooner than later so you don't end up doing something in a way that requires a complete rewrite. > > > >>> Love Linux all you want, > >> > >> I love the availability of the source code, the quality of which > >> decreases as one proceeds up the application stack from the kernel to > >> the userspace sttuff which contains a *lot* of outright crap imo. > > > > Why would you love that? AirDrop is exclusive, linux > file-transfers are inclusive. No need for further discussion, but > thanks anyway. airdrop is fast, simple and efficient only because apple builds both ends and can build the necessary hardware *and* the software to make it work smoothly. doing that on another platform is extraordinarily difficult because the necessary hardware is not guaranteed to be there and if it is, the software might not work properly because each manufacturer will have designed the hardware a little differently. in other words, stagnation. > > > >> Which is fine, if you don't mind being constrained to Apple. How interesting. How do you work around the > file-transfer issues between for example, iOS and Android? I think > you're pulling my leg. Or pulling your own leg, who knows. there aren't any file transfer issues between ios and android. in fact, it's actually very easy. just about all industry standard protocols (i.e., not apple's custom protocols) will work, including smb, http, ftp, sftp, ftps, webdav, as well as cloud services, including dropbox, box, onedrive and many others. the question is which method to choose, not how can it be done.
