I have a Galaxy S4 that I've been using for a long time. I have K9 mail
and I love but it I'd like to be able to perform actions from the mail
notification area on the pull-down menu on my home-screen. I know I've
activated a mode in the notification area previously which allows me to
delete emails directly from that context but I have no idea how I did
that. I also want to be able to do this from the profile (and not
landscape) view.

Does anyone know how this can be done?

From within the relevant account (if you have more than one) within K9,
use the "..." menu, settings, account settings, notifications.

If there is a single unread message you get "read/mark as read" options
in the notification, if there are more than one unread message, you just
get "mark all as read" option.
