Keep an eye out for them and pester your SP/manufacturer if you don't get
them.

Patches? What's that? Ever since I bought my Tesco Hudl (Kitkat) I
don't think I've had a single patch.

How do I make my tablet catch up on these?

You have to choose very carefully with Android hardware. Much of it doesn't
get any updates from the day it leaves the factory. Only Nexus devices are
guaranteed to get updates for - I think - two years

This is a big problem for Android in my opinion.

You could try hassling Tesco and maybe bandy Sale of Goods Act at them, but
I wouldn't hold my breath.

So my Android is not updating itself but is out of date.

Can I get the patches from a 3rd party site or do they have to be
specific to my Hudl?

Yup.

Possibly. There are third party versions of Android that are made available
for many devices e.g. Cyanogen mod. However, it's not for the feint
hearted. See here for more http://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tesco-hudl

You will lose any proprietary apps that came with the hudl.

I'm sorry to sat that you'll have to find updates that are specifically
for your device, that come from it's manufacturer and in some cases, are
approved by your cellular carrier. Because Android is open source it's
easy for a device manufacturer to design their own custom user
interface, for example Samsung's Touch Wiz or LG's Sense which leads to
the problem of fragmentation in the Android market. Some of these device
manufacturer have so many models that providing updates to all of them
would be a monumental task. So the manufacturers generally only provide
updates for their flagship and high-end devices, and ignoring the older
mid-range and bargain models.

So depending on what device you have, the chances of you ever seeing an
update for Android are very slim or non-existent.

Have there been any serious security flaws exposed since my KitKat
(4.4.2)?

No. It isn't. And I'm afraid it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I just got an update on Samsung Galaxy S6 edge's Android v6.0.1. this
