You'd think the GUI would explain that it is the LINUX server setup that it's asking about, but, I guess anyone using that app is *supposed* to already know which is the server and which is the client. In this case, what you said was that the app is asking for how the Linux FTP server is *already* set up. In this case, the Linux FTP server doesn't exist, so, now I see why it's impossible for me to answer those questions. I've said already that I would rather not create another server on my Linux laptop just to copy a bunch of pictures over - because ... a) There must be an easier more straightforward way, and, b) Every server is a security hole requiring due diligence. I think the best two suggestions, to date, are: 1. Use KDE connect (although that might be yet another server), or, 2. Use an SSH SFTP client (which seems to have the most promise without setting up a *new* server on the Linux laptop).

I figured it all out and used Turbo Client to quickly transfer a few hundred photos as a test case. Once you get the bare-bones and highly inconsistent GUI figured out, the thing works quite well! Having file names constantly change case is odd, and unforgivable, but, if you simply ignore all file casing and if you get over the fact there are more than a half dozen DCIM directories scattered about, and if you finally manage to navigate without wiping out everything you've done to date, it's nice and fast. Thanks!

ES File Explorer has a decent SFTP client, too. You could have (still could!) use that. I use it all the time for the same reason you do, to transfer music and picture files between my phone and PC. I was confused before when you said you planned to transfer files via SSH. I guess you meant SFTP. I'm surprised that your laptop had a working SFTP server installed and running by default. SFTP is akin to FTP and both carry some (but not a lot of) security risk, as both can allow other people access to your computer. SFTP is more secure because the connection is encrypted. If I were you I'd do what I suggested before: enable the SFTP server when you need to transfer some files and then disable it when you aren't using it.

Nil, I did try ES File Explorer Manager, but, as you know, for these kinds of things where you just want to get the overall job done (which, in this case, is transferring large batches of files), I'll stick with the first WiFi solution that worked - which was Turbo Client. > I was confused before when you said you planned to transfer files via > SSH. I agree with you that I meant SFTP (I really wasn't sure of *what* I wanted as I just wanted files to go over en masse). I do use VPN quite a lot, so, I do have openVPN installed, so, maybe (I didn't check) that's where the SFTP server came from. I really don't know *where* it came from, but, I was glad not to have to set up yet another server on Linux. > I'd do what I suggested > before: enable the SFTP server when you need to transfer some files and > then disable it when you aren't using it. That's a good idea, but, at the moment, I don't even know what the server is called. Running a ps -auxww and then grepping for ftp finds nothing running; however, grepping for "ssh" nets "/usr/sbin/sshd -D" running by root.

Actually, you can easily set up the phone as an SSH server and just
point and click mount your phone from Linux. Then what's on the phone
just looks like any other folder.

The phone was mounted as two mount points (one for the SD card and the other for the internal memory) on Linux.

Turbo Client is an extremely unpolished GUI, which is unforgiving of mistakes, but it's fast and efficient once you're over the learning curve. The learning curve has *nothing* to do with the process; it has everything to do with the unpolished GUI. However, once you're past that learning curve, the thing is fast, and efficient, which, pretty much, is the most you can hope for. Thanks!

There are 2 levels of Network option, and you only need the first. On my phone, the Fast Access menu has 5 options: Favorite Local Library Network Tools If I tap Network, I get 8 options, the first of which is Network (again) and the 7th one is Remote Manager. *That's* the one you want! Tap that, and you'll get a screen with a 'Turn on' button. Tap that and you'll get: "Input the address on your PC" ftp://192.168.1.74:3721 - or whatever (yours may be different) That's the address which you need to give to your FTP client software on the laptop. -- Cheers, Roger ____________ Please reply to Newsgroup. I tell my router to give all devices that I own and consistently connect to my home network a static IP address. That's not to say that I give the device a fixed address, it means that my router's DHCP server knows to reserve a particular address and always assign it to that particular device when requested. The device is still set to ask for an address from DHCP, so it will still work when connected to other networks, but it will always get the same address on my own network. That would avoid your problem about changing addresses. I use that method for wireless portable devices like my phones, tablets, and laptops. The wired devices (desktop computers, smart TV, printer) are set with a fixed address outside the DHCP pool.)
