that's not for opening an account and there is no conversion.

did you even read the link??? obviously not.

What about the extremely hard to find 'Settings' -> 'Forwarding and
POP/IMAP'!? :-(

And there's no issue of 'converting'! You just *have* a Gmail account
and that account can be *accessed* by POP or/and IMAP (and of course
from a web-browser).

What makes you think that?
The first instruction is "Sign in to Gmail". How would you do that whilst creating an account?

Did you try following the instructions?

The instructions there were for OPENING AN ACCOUNT. You can read the
instructions for opening an account without actually having one. I
opened gmail accounts as soon as they were offered long ago.

I give up on this. One account works as both pop and imap, and I may
similarly try adding imap to one of my USEFUL accounts. I have to think
about this.

Thanks for your suggestions.

you're clueless.

*nowhere* in that link does it say *anything* about opening an account.

it's entirely about activating imap on an *existing* account and
configuring your mail app to connect.

you have to *learn* about this before you can even begin to think about
it.

NO THEY ARE NOT

Please explain what exactly you think in this set of instructions has anything whatsoever to do with opening an account?
     Sign in to Gmail.
Click the gear in the top right .
     Select Settings.
     Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
     Select Enable IMAP.
     Click Save Changes.

Is there something wrong with your web browser, or is it PEBCAK?

Pay attention. The link you sent originally was to the gmail
INSTRUCTIONS website. Now you're talking about the settings page for
each account, WHICH I KNOW ABOUT. Heretofore I had thought that
POP/IMAP was an either/or thing. I was wrong. I've mentioned this in
several ways, but it apparently doesn't sink in. Are you unaware of
what you've posted? You might want to save copies from now on...

I drank years ago. Somebody poured Kool-ade in the water, but it's
still water.

Enough. Really.

You may want to follow your own advice.

You appear to be confused. The link I sent originally is to the page which explains how to change an existing account to use IMAP.
It is also the ONLY link I have posted.

> Now you're talking about the settings page for each account,

I am STILL talking about settings page for each account, since it's the only page I've ever mentioned.

Good. Eventually. Can you now move on?

The only thing which has "sunk in" is that you don't appear to read what I post because you continue to reply with incorrect information.

> Are you unaware of what you've posted? You might want to save copies from now on...

I know exactly what I've posted, it's right there on the Internet. It's also right there in the quote at the top of your post and again at the top of this post. I presume you've actually read the post before quoting, and replying to it?

You might want to re-read it.

This is only a problem if you're reading gmail, right?

If I'm reading Verizon mail or something else, the phone will be just
like a laptop, only the stuff I get the days I get mail, right?

Every email app I've tried lets you control when you fetch email. If
yours doesn't, you need to use a different app. "The Real Bev" is
completely confused about all of this.

I don't know, I only use gmail accounts. Charter (my ISP) might be
better, but I just don't LIKE them :-(

Personally, I have/had no such problems with my K9 instance,
so you may be a victim of unique SW configuration of your phone.

Me neither - K9 works fine here, also when opening URLs and returning

The crashing started a few months ago. At first it happened only very
occasionally, but it has gotten worse to the point where it happens
about 80% of the time. I expect it's some unusual interaction with my
phone or setup. I don't blame K9 per se, but I've now determined that
it's the primary factor on this phone. I've reported it to the
developers multiple times, but never heard anything back from them.

Probably no application works for all users
and all their HW+SW configurations.

If it is verified it does not happen to others,
there is not need to blame the app,
but switching to alternative is natural.

Well - if the developer can not reproduce the problem they likely can
not help you anyway.

K9 allows to save your profile to a file. Did you try uninstalling and
installing it again and then importing the profile into a "fresh" setup
of K9?

I understand that, but an acknowledgment would have been polite. They
shouldn't invite people to report problems if they never bother read
them.

No, but that's a good idea. I thought about reinstalling but didn't
want to set everything up again. If I can save my settings I will try
it.

I use:

Gmail (comes bundled in Android on the smartphone)
MS Outlook (the app is free)
Xfinity Connect (my ISP's app)

I could use MS Outlook for my Hotmail, Gmail, and ISP e-mail accounts;
however, Gmail is already there (and cannot be uninstalled) and there
other other-than-email features in my ISP's app, like voicemail and
Voice2Go (free wifi outgoing/incoming phone calls). Since Gmail cannot
be removed and since I will keep Xfinity Connect for features other than
e-mail, I might as well as use each one for the associated service
(i.e., use a native app for the native service).
