I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SCH-i605. No service. Should I take out the SIM card? I leave it in Airplane mode, but is that sufficient to minimize the power consumption of the radio? I can still initiate a call, although it only gets me to the "no service" message, so some part of the radio is still enabled. Would removing the SIM card help battery life? Or maybe increase consumption continually looking for a SIM card? Are there techniques for neutering the phone radio(s) completely without rooting? Longest standby battery life is the objective. I do not need any emergency anything. Just want it to have some battery life when I decide to use it on wifi.

WiFi is the thing that uses most battery. If you can configure the thing to switch off the WiFi when the screen is off, it will last more. My Asus tablet (with SIM removed) goes from two days to a week in this mode. -- Cheers, Carlos.

No, the gadget that displays power by application differentiates both, and WiFi goes to 20% battery. -- Cheers, Carlos.

No, this is configurable. For instance, you may want to be notified the instant an email comes: this need the wifi to be up even if the thing is in standby. It may be continuously or at intervals. >>>> If you can configure the thing >>>> to switch off the WiFi when the screen is off, it will last more. >>> >>> not by much. >> >> From lasting 2 days my tablet goes to last 5 days minimum. I touched the wifi config to be off in standby, and the documentation of the tablet documents this action and the power saving result. -- Cheers, Carlos.

Again, this is configurable and depends on circumstances. There is a graphic that depict how much power was used by each major application, and WiFi is typically large. It can show a solid bar or broken, showing when it was on. On my tablet, WiFi shows 8% of battery power used, and operating system 24%. Display is 2%. It predicts that it will last 4 days more, and last charge was two days ago. On my tablet, power settings, I can tell the WiFi to never power up automatically when the device is on standby. Another setting is to leave on automatic, to power up as needed. I have more settings than you. >>>>>> If you can configure the thing >>>>>> to switch off the WiFi when the screen is off, it will last more. >>>>> >>>>> not by much. >>>> >>>> From lasting 2 days my tablet goes to last 5 days minimum. No SIM. -- Cheers, Carlos.

Sigh. The same device, with the wifi in automatics mode, uses a lot more battery, and lasts 2 or 3 days, not six. You are seeing only 8% because it is DISABLED, not "Automatic". My point, not yours. -- Cheers, Carlos.

I believe you have standby radio communication whether you have service or not. The SIM and some $$$ gets you the ability to use the device on the web or phone system. The key question is, "Does any SIM/noSIM/Airplane mode save power?" What's the difference in STANDBY power consumption between 1) a SIM with no service 2) no SIM 3) airplane mode with SIM 4) airplane mode with no SIM 5) SIM WITH service 6) SIM WITH service, but out of tower range. 7) SIM with no service, but out of tower range. Does the system keep retrying updates despite the fact that there is no cellular connection? I want the cellular radio to STFU to the greatest extent possible without powering the whole phone completely off.

No, the easiest way, on most handsets, is to turn off cellular data. This can then be left off (unless and until it's needed) without affecting the setting of WiFi or Bluetooth, or what's turned on and off by the curiously-named "airplane mode". -- Cheers, Daniel.
