True. However the message I replied to didn't say smart cell phones"
or "android cell phones"; it made a general statement about all "cell
phones."

Yes. That's why I said one could argue that even those older cell
phones were computers. But considering how little you could do with
them, they were "not *really* [emphasis added] computers, in my
opinion." I never used mine for anything but sending and receiving
calls, so I never considered it a computer (even though I knew that
technically it was).

you can't do much with an original ibm pc or commodore 64 but those are
still computers.

Sadly there are many different interpretations/definitions for
'computer'.

Generally one uses the requirement to be able to add a - user-chosen -
program as a way of distinguishing a 'computer' from other devices.

By the latter definition, "those older cell phones" would probably not
be considered a computer.

  nospam's interpretation is so broad, it's meaningless/unusable.

But you'll have to excuse me, because I have to receive some email on

More to the point: (To get email,) One needs *access to* a computer
(-like device), one does not neccesarily need to *have*/own/<whatever> a
computer.

But I (we?) digress. We live - and *think* - in the *real* world, not
in nospam's parallel universe.

P.S. If I'm not mistaken, I have been using/getting e-mail since the
(very) early 70's, but I can assure you I didn't 'have' the 'needed'
multi 100K$ computer.

Or a computer at the library.

And the point was that since there are many people who don't have a
computer (whether they get email or not) there are also many many
people who have only one computer. It's amazing someone would not
know that.

Did you read it? It said "you need ...". My point was *you don't need*. You
can get by with much less. For a time I even got by with a $50 Chemical
Bank "Home Banking Terminal" (dedicated 300 baud keyboard/modem device)
whose output was displayed on a B/W TV set. Yes, it'd dial up my mail
service providers' modem banks and let me see and send emails. You want to
brand that a computer? Be my guest :-) . But don't expect me to join you.

sending or receiving email requires a computer, even if the computer is
at the library.

I disagree. It's still a perfectly good mail protocol for a certain way

While this may be true, I've had some questionable experiences with
some IMAP servers that have made me shy away from IMAP and stick to
POP, which I can at least get to work.

The worst experience was an IMAP server that automatically deleted
EMail older than a certain (quite short -- about a month) limit,
regardless of the client settings. The whole point of IMAP is that you
keep your EMail on the server, so the server should keep it unless and
until you delete it. The ISP in question seemed to be treating IMAP as
a sort of POP3 on steroids, and not expecting anyone to actually keep
mail on the server.

The best solution is to run your own mailserver and collect mail from
that using whichever of POP and IMAP suits you. At least then you know
you'll always have all your EMail on the server ... but it's not for
the fainthearted!

Yet another alternative is to use a local 'pretend' mailserver such as
Hamster [1].

Such a 'pretend' mailserver acts as a mail *client* (MUA/MSA) not as a
mail server (MTA) to the outside world, i.e. on the receiving side it
uses POP or/and IMAP, not SMTP. It can keep your mail as long as you
want.

In turn the real mail clients, i.e. the mail clients you use, talk to
the 'pretend' mailserver with POP or/and IMAP (and SMTP for the sending
side.

Hamster can do the same thing for NetNews/Usenet and that is what I
use it for (see my User-Agent header).

[1] I use 'Hamster Classic' which is mature software. I only have a
German-language reference handy:

I can get mail just as I want it with Thunderbird. Mail isn't the
problem. With firefox, say, I want to have one tab open to my picasaweb
(google photos) ID1 account, a different picasaweb account (ID2), my
youtube (ID3) account, a webmail account (ID4), and the play store
(ID5). I can't have that. I can be logged in to only one account at a
time. I can run several separate browsers at the same time, each logged
into a different google account, but I don't really want to do that.

I THINK it's worse with android because I have only ONE screen to play
with -- I have four on my linux desktop so I can be running a lot of
separate programs. Android does a lot of logging in/out automatically,
so maybe it's not so bad after all. I only actually use a few of the
accounts on the phone.

Google wants you to have only ONE identity, which you use for all google
products. No, I don't want that. Yes, it's convenient, but I don't
want it.

Not sure what you mean by that, either.

You're bringing up a lot of stuff that's beside my point, which was
that you can more easily sync email with all your computers if you use
IMAP, and that you can use IMAP to get to any of your existing email
boxes. Also, you can have multiple Gmail accounts set up in most or all
Android email apps... even the Gmail app, or so I have read.

I do understand that it's difficult, maybe impossible, to have two tabs
in one browser open to two different Google accounts, but that's a
different issue than the email one.
