Hi Carlos,
First, let's be clear we SOLVED the saving problem in a way that is
brilliantly elegant, in that it turns the SHARE concept into a SAVE.
Until Andy explained it to me, I wasn't aware that Android is DESIGNED to
share instead of to save, so WhatsApp wants us to SHARE to a PDF reader.
So that SOLVES the second half of the question in the SUBJECT, in a way
that only I can do, as I doubt ANYONE on this newsgroup could do that.
Q2: How do you SAVE a PDF attachment from WhatsApp to the file system?
For those who claimed WhatsApp comes with a native PDF reader, that's
false, so what it means is the first half of the SUBJECT still stands.
Q1: What's the BEST PDF reader that reads, zooms, and saves?
With those two solutions being the topic, first, let's be very clear
because for some reason you're following Frank in BLAMING me for
1. WhatsApp doesn't have a direct SAVE
2. WhatsApp doesn't come with a PDF reader
I need to repeat you can't blame me for those two WhatsApp flaws.
You just can't. So stop it. Don't follow Frank into the abyss.
I get it both Frank and Richmond blamed me for WhatsApp decisions.
But trust me, I'm really smart but I'm not *that* smart, Carlos.
So you give me way too much credit for controlling WhatsApp software.
Now, let's address the asininely idiotic claim that the piece of crap
Samsung tools would 'solve' this problem for everyone in the newsgroup.
That's so absurd, that just pointing out your claims shows it's nuts.
It's just absurd that you claim everyone should use Samsung's OEM crap.
I get it you're following your hero, Frank, as you seem to back him up.
And that's fine. Back up Frank all you want. You clearly are doing that.
But at least pick something to back him up on that isn't utterly absurd.
....
...
...
...
...
Let's get back to creating SOLUTIONS for Android that nobody else can.
Q1: What's the best PDF reader that can zoom and save?
Q2: What's the best way to add a "Save As" to the "Share to"?
I think we've solved the second problem in ways that nobody but I can.
But I have at this point, too many PDF viewers to pick the best one yet.

WhatsApp does not have I direct save, because that's not the Android way. The Android way is share. As to the PDF reader, the issue is the other way around: Why *would* WhatsApp come with a PDF reader? You're just making that up. > > [...] Ignoring the bullshit... I learned a lot in this thread from others and from empirical testing, which if I didn't know about the Android guiding philosophy on ShareTo versus SaveAs, maybe others also didn't know, so we likely materially added to the overall tribal knowledge of the ng in this thread. Apparently you, Arno and Andy said you knew about and that's about it. Unlike the nutcases, I'm perfectly open about what I know and what I don't know, as it's not a battle of wits but a collective team working together. I openly admit sincerely I had no idea that Android deprecates the concept of SaveAs in favor of ShareTo (or even OpenWith), which is why I was looking for something that I had expected to be there, but wasn't there. Luckily, the solutions I came up with add the "SaveAs" to the "ShareTo". (And, of course, many of the OpenWith" apps also have a "SaveAs". The problem to be cognizant of is many PDF viewers don't have a "SaveAs". And some of those that do have a "SaveAs" can't get out of scoped storage. All this is covered in this thread in gory detail, so that's good work. What's shocking to me, which I just learned, is the sharesheet population is, essentially, completely arbitrary (from our human eyes point of view). *Android's share menu could finally be more consistent in Android 14* <https://www.esper.io/blog/android-14-share-menu> "Android 14 is expected to bring more consistency to the share menu, which has long frustrated users and developers with its unpredictable behavior across apps. Google is working to give apps and users more control over what appears in the sheet and in what order." Note: I'm on Android 13, and it's unpredictable as hell, not "across apps", but within this one testcase of WhatsApp pulling up the PDF sharesheet. When I tried to screenshot document for the team, I couldn't get the Android WhatsApp PDF sharesheet to show the same thing consistently. a. Sometimes it shows 4 apps (and activities) in the horizontal listing b. There's no "More..." at all! c. But sometimes it shows up to 12 in the horizontal listing d. With or without a "More..." e. Yet, sometimes, there's the "More..." and it shows a vertical grid f. That grid sometimes shows 64 apps (and activities) g. But sometimes 87. It's capricious as all hell. Turns out, from my research, this is a common complaint on Android. <https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/znn9oz/comment/j0hz7yc/> Who knew? Did you? Not me. Now we do. -- On Usenet, we share what we know and learn what we don't.

I compared a few PDF readers for you, actually using them in the way to
solve your problem, and you did not comment on that post.

This thread asks two generic questions for the benefit of the team:
a. What app to use to view PDFs from WhatsApp, and,
b. How to save that PDF outside of the WhatsApp file system storage.
Woo hoo! We solved the second half of the age-old issue of SAVING a file!
<https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg>
Again, you're new here so you may have no idea what WhatsApp does when
dealing with people from Europe (in my case, German relatives) via phones.
I started using WhatsApp for that reason, but well before RCS became all
the rage, my own children (who are still on my long-grandfathered family
plan) are on both platforms. The girls are in iPhones. Pink iPhones.
That's how I got introduced to jailbreaking, actually, since my first
iPhone was, oh, it must have been the iPhone 4 I think, where I was on
T-Mobile and Apple had made some kind of deal to only be on AT&T.
So I had to jailbreak the damn thing, and add Cydia, and put Limewire songs
such as "I'm a barbie girl" as the ringtone, which is what you do for kids.
Now those kids have kids, and every day I enjoy a plethora of images and
videos, where if you look closely at the whatsapp avatar, that's a baby.
<https://i.postimg.cc/tRmWnpFP/whatsappshare.jpg>
And, in fact, the entire conversation about the plumber fixing the toilets
was for their house, not for mine, which is why they sent me that quote.
<https://i.postimg.cc/g2kQdrwY/toilet.jpg>
In the end, I bought the parts and my son in law did the repair, where the
reason for WhatsApp is that it makes communication with images much better.

Back to the topic at hand, the good news is we learned WhatsApp doesn't
have a SAVE button, but as Frank said, there are "Open with" options
galore, but that doesn't change the question as to the best PDF reader.
Also, when Frank said this (verbatim), it made me think of a workaround:
I agree, saving *should* be a feature of WhatsApp, but - contrary
to the Windows version - the Android version of WhatsApp does not
have a save (file) feature, only Share. And by default - at least
my Samsung phone - Share does not have a a save choice either.
So... you'll need a extra file manager to get that.
Since we're all about clever solutions to every problem set, that anyone
can use, so that the team benefits as a whole from every suggestion, I
might be able to test this program which I previously used for Aurora.
<https://f-droid.org/packages/name.lmj001.savetodevice>
"Save on Device adds an option to the Android Sharesheet
that allows you to save files to your device."
But at that point, the Share button is hidden, just two levels deeper.
When I longpress on the PDF I get on top these icons inside WhatsApp
Left arrow, 1, bent left arrow, trash, bent doubleright arrow, 3dots
Looking up what they mean, apparently they mean
a. Left arrow: Go back / unselect
b. 1: Indicates 1 item selected
c. Bent left arrow (Reply): Reply to the message
d. Trash: Delete message
e. Bent double-right arrow (Forward): Forward the message to another chat
f. 3 dots (More): Additional option s
There's no share icon. :(
But inside of the 3 dots is
A. Verify security code
B. Star
C. Share
D. Reply privately
E. Pin
F. Ask Meta AI
G. Report (phone number)
When I tap "Share", I get a billion options (way more than before with the
Open With dialog, and one of those is "Save on device" from F-Droid.
<https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg>
Note that I happen to have tested all the free ad-free file managers for
Android so I do realize many of those also have the same SAVE AS option.
However, the F-Droid "Save on Device" tool should work for everyone.
No matter what file managers they happen to have installed on Android.
Voila! This solution will work for everyone, probably in every app too!
I love solutions that are free and ad free and which EVERYONE can use!

Thanks for that suggestion, and for not stonewalling on insisting everyone in the newsgroup use the piece of crap OEM Samsung tools, which is absurd. As for you blaming me for keeping a clean system devoid of the Samsung and Google bloatware, you need to know that you shouldn't play that blame game. I get it you and Frank teamed up to blame me for not using Samsung's crap. But what you need to know is I provide UNIVERSAL SOLUTIONS on this ng. To suggest everyone on the ng use Samsung's OEM crap is fine, by the way. But to BLAME ME for NOT using Samsung OEM crap is NOT fine. Get the point? Anyway, it was CLEAR IN THE OP that I solved the problem, temporarily, using first the Adobe reader (which failed) and then QField which worked. I said so, clearly, so for you to claim I didn't have a PDF reader because I deleted the Samsung OEM bloatware is was and always will be absurd. I SOLVED the initial problem BEFORE I even opened this thread, and I showed the PDF (which I converted to JPEG on Windows) which proves that point. <https://i.postimg.cc/g2kQdrwY/toilet.jpg> The POINT of opening the thread was to solve these problems for everyone: Q1: What's the best PDF reader to open a PDF attachment on Android? Q2: What's the best way to save a PDF attachment on Android? I know too much about web browsers and swiss-army-knife tool suites to even believe a web browser is "the best way" to view and save PDFs but it will work. I never replied to your original because I knew it wasn't the best. Since I've already solved the UNIVERSAL problem of saving an attachment in any app to the file system by converting the "share to" to a "save as", the only problem not fully solved in this thread is what's the BEST PDF reader. As you can see from my screenshot, I have TONS of file managers and PDF readers, so not having the Samsung OEM piece-of-crap was never the issue. <https://i.postimg.cc/tRmWnpFP/whatsappshare.jpg> <https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg> The only open question in this thread, is what's the BEST PDF viewer on Android, where I already have plenty to test out, plus thread suggestions. -- Usenet is where people with vast knowledge converge to discuss ideas.

I found the solution! This thread asks two generic questions for the benefit of the team: a. What app to use to view PDFs from WhatsApp, and, b. How to save that PDF outside of the WhatsApp file system storage. In my response to Richmond, just now, I found a UNIVERSAL solution that anyone can use, which is free, open source, and has no advertisements. <https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg> Not only does this universal solution solve the problem of saving a file onto the file system from WhatsApp, it should work for every Android app! Woo hoo! I love when we solve problems that everyone has, which turn out to be so perfect that they don't require any particular OEM or convoluted method. 1. When the Android ShareSheet comes up from within any app... 2. Simply select "Save on Device" What could be simpler, more universal, nor more elegant! Anyway, that leaves the second question still up for grabs, where I will strive to test the "best free no-ad PDF reader" suggestions already given. -- Usenet is where people with vast knowledge converge to discuss ideas.

[1] I don't see the Samsung PDF reader listed as a seperate app, but it *is* shown as a choice in 'Open with'. Its icon looks like that of (Samsung) Notes and indeed the Notes app has a PDF+ icon near the top right. It seems that the PDF reader is just a read-only version of the PDF reader in Notes. When the 'Open with' popup is shown in landscape mode, the text says 'Samsung N... PDF reader', so apparently the 'N...' part should actually be 'Notes', so in full 'Samsung Notes PDF reader'. Sigh! Hi Frank,
Thanks for that data about Android WA not having a Share-to-Save choice.
Thankfully, I found a way to add "Save on Device" to WhatsApp sharesheet!
<https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg>
As are almost all my solutions, it's universal, simple, and hence,
brilliantly elegant, since it works for any app that won't let you save.

Here are the 40 apps that appear when WhatsApp triggers the OpenWith.
<https://i.postimg.cc/tRmWnpFP/whatsappshare.jpg>
Since I've tested all the free file managers on Android, of course some of
those will save to device, but that was never the reason for the question.
The question was to find a UNIVERSAL solution that everyone can benefit
from, and I found it, since almost never am I stumped by Android problems.
Even you must know by now that I'm DIFFERENT than almost every poster here,
save for maybe the smartest like Andy and maybe one or two other posters.
There isn't a problem I can't solve, for me, but the goal, always, for me,
is to solve the problem for EVERYONE, so we can't assume only Samsung here.
Anyway, the solution for saving the file that works for all apps
(presumably) and for all Android phones, might just be to install this.
<https://f-droid.org/packages/name.lmj001.savetodevice>
"Save on Device adds an option to the Android Sharesheet
that allows you to save files to your device."
I installed that because Aurora wouldn't let me save the downloaded APK,
but it works just as well to add the SAVE capability to any Android app.
There's still the open debate as to the best free PDF reader for Android.

And, as Arno and I have been saying, extra file managers *also* offer exactly that 'save to device' functionality. So I guess that makes our solution equally "universal, simple, brilliant, elegant and smart"!

So I guess that makes our > solution equally "universal, simple, brilliant, elegant and smart"! First off, I wish you would stop proving me 100% correct about you that you lack the basic normal intelligence to see that I already used the file manager before I ever asked the question in this newsgroup, Frank. Do you remember *this* image of the PDF in the first sentence of the OP? <https://i.postimg.cc/g2kQdrwY/toilet.jpg> Stop proving me that you're incredibly stupid, Frank. How do you *think* I got that PDF in the first place, Frank? Seriously. I wish you would STOP PROVING ME RIGHT that you're incredibly stupid. Secondly, did you notice ALL THE FILE MANAGERS in this screenshot, Frank? <https://i.postimg.cc/tRmWnpFP/whatsappshare.jpg> Again, that was in the FIRST SENTENCE of my FIRST RESPONSE to you, Frank. Please. Oh Dear God. Please stop proving me right that you're stupid. Just stop it. I tested every file manager on the planet, Frank. You are too stupid to know that too. You're so ungodly stupid, Frank, that proving me right about you is getting tiresome, since you THEN propose a Samsung-only piece of crap product next. I don't mind you proposed that piece of crap proprietary product Frank. I mind you desperately trying to insult me because i didn't tell you that. I didn't tell Richmond that Fennec is also a stupid idea, Frank. But Richmond isn't desperate to insult me, Frank. I simply showed Richmond, in the first sentence of my next response to him, the solution that I came up with which works without a file manager. <https://i.postimg.cc/B6ryMZpn/saveasfile.jpg> Your adamant suggestion to use a piece-of-shit proprietary Samsung tool is fine but you need to respect my intelligence when I point out that using Samsung's crappy tools doesn't work on all Android devices, even as you seem to think that the only solution to all problems is a Samsung tool. As for the elegant universal solution, I posted three of them to XDA today. What value have YOU added, Frank, in the time I invested to help others?

You wasted everyone's time and energy on this thread acting like a child.
When you act like an adult, I'll treat you like you're an adult. Clear?
[And Carlos wasted our time by telling me to stop responding to you, when
he really should have told you to stop the crap that I had to respond to.]
Anyway, we covered a LOT of ground in this thread, so the team benefited.
1. Android deprecates SaveAs in deference to ShareTo/OpenWith
2. We added a "SaveAs" to the ShareTo menu which "solves" that problem
3. We found out that the ShareTo menu is capricious as all hell
4. But, apparently, it's less capricious in Android 14
*Android's share menu could finally be more consistent in Android 14*
<https://www.esper.io/blog/android-14-share-menu>
"Android 14 is expected to bring more consistency to the share menu,
which has long frustrated users and developers with its unpredictable
behavior across apps. Google is working to give apps and users more
control over what appears in the sheet and in what order."
That's a LOT of ground to cover, especially if some poor soul *knows* he
has a certain app (or activity) that he "can" ShareTo, but it doesn't show.
Luckily, any of us can get a complete list of items that "can" show up
in the Android ShareTo menu, by running this adb command below.
C:\> adb shell cmd package query-activities -a android.intent.action.SEND -t application/pdf --user 0 | grep -E "(packageName|name=)"
What does it find on your phone?
Mine found 87 entries, but 54 distinct apps (64 individual activities) that
are registered to handle PDFs via ACTION_SEND on my Android 13 A32-5G.

And, I guess "some" of us can do "App Pinning" to ensure the one app
we "want" to show up, actually does show up (but it didn't work for me).
*App Pinning inside the Sharesheet*

You acted like a child and now, as the first absurd excuse you can think of to defend yourself, you're claiming it's a difference of a point of view. Name the "difference in a point of view" that you're alluding to, Frank. Name it! HINT: If you can't name it, then it's bullshit. >> [And Carlos wasted our time by telling me to stop responding to you, when >> he really should have told you to stop the crap that I had to respond to.] > > Carlos did no such thing. Carlos chastised me for responding to your crap, which he has a right to do, but I pointed out to Carlos that it's ALWAYS you who throws the first punch (which we've proved for over a decade is what ALWAYS happens). So my strong suggestion to Carlos was either to chastise BOTH of us, which he did not do, or at least chastise you instead, since you threw the punch. I simply reacted to your punch. >> 1. I think it was Andy and Arno who gave me that idea, but since Google introduced Scoped Storage (enforced strictly starting in Android 11), apps have been heavily restricted from freely writing or saving files into arbitrary shared directories on external storage. Luckily, Android's framework allows apps to pass data using system-managed Intents (ACTION_SEND, ACTION_VIEW, or the Storage Access Framework's ACTION_CREATE_DOCUMENT).
