Best Buy instituted a policy that was, to me, stupid and bordering on offensive. I refused to take the time and annoyance to comply with the policy and an employee yelled at me. So not only is their policy stupid, but their training is sub-par. I do not need to do business with a company like that, do I? (and from the looks of their parking lots, neither does anyone else). >> so I've not been back. > I've also said that when I've been really pissed at treatment I've > gotten at a store (or restaurant). But trouble is after a while I really > missed going to the store. I was the one being punished, not the store > (which didn't miss me at all). There are many stores and many restaurants. I have countless choices and do not need to go to stores that behave badly. In the last 5 years we've spent a LOT of money on home improvements after moving into a new house. Not a single dime of that money (over $43,000 at least) went to Lowe's. In over 20 years I've never felt the need to go to a Toys R Us. Circuit City (remember them) refused to honor an accidental damage extended warranty and I went from being a loyal customer to a boycotter who told *everyone* they were not trustworthy. The only times I've ever gone to a Walmart have been when on the road and there was no other choice for something we needed right then (like when my eldest kid (now 19) was 4 and threw up on the way to Yellowstone we had to stop at the first store to get cleaning up supplies and a plastic tub, and Walmart was the only choice. I don't miss stores that treat me badly. Why would anyone? -- It's as original as a photocopy -nospam

The first Walmart I ever saw was on a trip back east in 1988. It was
absolutely mind-boggling. This huge store that had EVERYTHING and the
prices were good. Moreover, they're anti-union. I'd like to have one
closer than 5 miles away; I only shop there when it's on the way from,
say, Costco :-)

A shop being anti-union is not one of the criteria I use when deciding f I will shop there. Costco is run by a politically very liberal person, I lean far in the other direction. The employees are treated well from what I've been told. They don't have a union because they don't need one, the management treats them well. They provide excellent service, the products are good, the prices are good. That's why I shop there. I'm moving in about six months from Long Island to Tennessee and the nearest Costco is a tow-hour drive from where I'll be living. I'll miss being able to take a ten-minute drive to Costco. On a side note, unions exist because management treated workers poorly. I believe that all workers today have benefited to a degree from what unions did many years ago, such as most of us having a five-day, 40-hour workweek. > >> I don't miss stores that treat me badly. The amount of $ that Walmart saves us is measured in the billions. If
I'm going to buy a given product, why should I pay more by buying it
elsewhere?

I would think that exactly the opposite would be true; government
service ought to have something to do with actual service rather than
fighting for (and getting) better pay and benefits than non-governmental
workers get. It used to be that they traded pay for benefits and job
security. Now they have it all. In spades.

Over my working life (20 years total) I was a Sears salesperson, a
secretary, a data-entry person, a project manager, a quality control
auditor and a facility security officer. Sears paid $1.10/hour plus 1%
commission on anything you sold. Minimum wage at the time was $1.00.
None of those jobs were unionized. Unionized grocery checkers probably
made more than I did most of the time, but who wants to do a job that
incredibly dull?

He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised. All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time. Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dad's; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark.) He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees. "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."" --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Of course, not all state/city/local government workers get the same salary and benefits as others do in different locations. On Long Island, the police unions are powerful and usually get what they ask for. They endorse the candidate for County Executive that will give them the most generous contract. If that candidate wins, as he quite often does, the negotiated contract is generous. IMO, it's a conflict of interest to get financial support from a group whose contract you will negotiate.

Over the years, I saw him being honored for his work at many NY Ranger Games at Madison Square Garden. What many don't realize is that he was still on active duty until the day he passed away. He was an extraordinary guy who will be dearly missed. I watched a video of his police escort procession as his body was taken along the Parkway. At each overpass, cops and fireman from different departments were waiting to hold a salute to him as his body passed under each overpass.

I've heard that becoming disabled right before normal retirement is
standard practice, thereby increasing the payout. Indeed, it was said
that not a single Los Angeles police officer had done a normal
non-disability retirement in years, possibly decades.

Indeed, it was said > that not a single Los Angeles police officer had done a normal > non-disability retirement in years, possibly decades. > > Disability retirement is a bit of a gamble for a peace officer as very few will qualify for a 100% disability benefit particularly if they are youngest than eligibility age for retirement. Many can get a 35-55% disability benefit for a work related injury. Some try and sometimes get a higher stress related benefit if they can show that the stress or heart disease is work related. They get that disability benefit tax free, but many times that will disqualify them for further work in the department. The big problem for that group is they might have to wait years before they are eligible to get their earned retirement benefits, so they might be getting a 35-55% untaxed benefit with no additional salary until they reach retirement eligibility, then they might get the 35-55% untaxed plus 30-40% taxed pension. Very few get that 100% untaxed disability benefit. Most of those I know who have gone the disability route regret it. Many have lost it all when they have been caught and shown to have received the disability benefit fraudulently. I am happy to have retired without having to deal with a real on the job injury leading to an early retirement. I am also happy to say that most of my colleagues have worked honestly and only a handful have resorted to manipulating the system, ultimately not to their benefit. -- Regards, Savageduck
