It doesn’t transmit the candidate password to the server, it transmits a truncated hash of it. Usually that's true. However, haveibeenpwned does give list of the sources of where the email had been seen (e.g. linkedin) if it's seen a specific site's breach. So, if you see that linkedin, myspace, etc have been implicated then they'd be a good start to change. >>> If I knew the platform, >>> there would be no need to change passwords everywhere the ID is used. >> >> the platform doesn't matter. >> >> if your email or password is in their list, you're at risk for being >> pwned if you haven't been already. change passwords *now* and enable >> real 2fa, not the sms crap. > > I agree entirely on this point. That is true. However, if you change the password for all those that you *do* remember then you can guarantee that the unknown compromised site won't be a vector to your other sites. This is why I have an email address that I only use for sites that I don't trust and it's never used for anything remotely important. If I forget what sites I've used it for, it doesn't matter. Nowadays that's unlikely as I use a password manager and I know exactly how many that is.

I do not speak about email accounts. E.g my registration dedicated email id was found on 10 breached sites. Hi Poutnik,
I apologize for misunderstanding your question.
I just received this email from a friend, which asks something similar:
"My email said 'Pwned on 2 breached sites and found no pastes'.
What exactly does that mean? What are "breached sites'?
One email comes up with says: "No breached accounts and no pastes"
What is a paste?
How do I know if an old password is listed that I longer use?"
For an example, let's assume that user has 1 email address:
o email1@gmail.com with a passwd of "gmailpw".
Let's assume that four web sites used that email for verification
o Ebay.com with a username of "ebay1", password of "ebaypw"
o Amazon.com with a username of "amazon1", password of "amazonpw'
o Outlook.com with a username of "outlook1", password of "outlookpw"
o Yahoo.with a username of "yahoo1", password of "yahoopw"
Given _that_ situation, and given the result of:
o 'Pwned on 2 breached sites and found no pastes'
*Does anyone yet know what exactly _that_ message literally tells us?*

Once more unto the breach, dear friends Breaches happen often enough these days that it’s getting hard to take them seriously. A more likely reaction is “oh, another one”, with little attention paid to the specifics. As I said, “Collection #1” is worthy of a closer look for a variety of reasons: It’s huge. The original report cites 773 million email addresses, and I’ve seen subsequent headlines quoting a billion and a half or more1. That may be the biggest breach to date. It has email addresses. This is not new, and in fact is what makes most breaches worthy of your awareness. You’ll want to know if your email address is present. With 773 million records in this one, the odds are high. It has plain text passwords. This is the most devastating. Most breaches contain what are referred to as “hashed” passwords — meaning that the passwords are obscured, possibly to the point of being unable to be recovered, if the hash algorithm was well chosen. In this breach, the passwords are there for anyone to see. More: https://askleo.com/what-should-i-do-about-the-latest-breach -- David B.

Not sure at all what the worry is with the email addresses. Email addresses are public, otherwise the public could not get in touch with you. Yes, it is annoying to get spam. Now if the email address has associated with it a password of yours that is not good. But that is exactly what is not recorded in this database. > > It has email addresses. Email > addresses are public, otherwise the public could not get in touch with > you. Yes, it is annoying to get spam. Duh! The check is not on email addresses as such, but on email addresses (and usernames) used as *identifiers* for *accounts*. That's why above the search box it says: "Check if you have an account that has been compromised in a data breach" I.e. you check if one of your *accounts* has been compromised in a data breach. To perform that check, you search on the email address or username of that *account*. The FAQ could perhaps be a bit clearer that the site is not about email addresses, but about breached accounts which *use* email addresses (or usernames) as account identifiers. This part of the FAQ indicates clearly that it's about accounts, i.e. email-address+password or username+password, not email-addresses. "Are user passwords stored in this site? When email addresses from a data breach are loaded into the site, no corresponding passwords are loaded with them." I.e. the 'email address' (read: account identifier) has a *corresponding* password. Probably the clearest indication that this is about accounts: <https://haveibeenpwned.com/About> "What is the site all about? This site came about after what was, at the time, the largest ever single breach of customer accounts Adobe. I often did post-breach analysis of user credentials and kept finding the same accounts exposed over and over again, often with the same passwords which then put the victims at further risk of their other accounts being compromised. The FAQs page goes into a lot more detail, but all the data on this site comes from "breaches" where data is exposed to persons that should not have been able to view it." Note 'accounts', 'credentials', 'accounts ... with ... passwords', etc.. > Now if the email address has associated with it a password of yours that > is not good. But that is exactly what is not recorded in this database. Your sentence is badly worded, but if I understand what you're trying to say, then that - email-address/username and associated password - IS exactly what is recorded on this site, but - obviously - in *seperate* datasets.

The website may not reveal the association directly, but it does state whether emails and passwords were released as part of a breach. If they were then they will be associated in the raw data available to any potential "hackers".

Someone has spectacularly failed to do the homework. Cybe R. Wizard -- Hawking-Unruh radiation is a measure of the quantum fluctuations in the radiation of accelerated charges. In the case of uniform acceleration, the existence of Unruh radiation adds confidence that radiation exists at all, and helps clarify aspects of the equivalence between radiation in uniform acceleration and in a uniform gravitational field. OK. It would behoove you to try to not to insult your betters and the best way to achieve that is to do your due diligence in investigating just who you are attempting to insult. Just to jeep from embarrassing yourself further, don you know. To even make the try is often enough to paint /you/ with the /real/ stupid brush and to make the attempt against one so immeasurably and loftily beyond your meager intellect as is Prof. Unruh is just laughable. Therefore I, and most probably everyone else within reading distance, am right this minute laughing at you and your unfortunate propensity to belittle yourself while trying unsuccessfully to do the opposite. First off, since you claim to correct grammar, it's "whom", where normally I wouldn't bother to correct your English but you claim that as your only value added in prior posts earlier this week - so it's apropos. Moving on, if this William Unruh actually said something _intelligent_ in the past week in threads that I'm on (where I would have seen them). It's a pretty simple request, Cybe(r) Wizard: o Name just one.

Oops. This was posted before completing the edits. Name just _one_ post in the last week, in threads that I'm on, which were authored by this idiot, William Unruh, that contained information that an actual _intelligent_ person would arguably promulgate. Name just one.
